Title: Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection PS3/360
Post by: Flames_of_chaos on November 07, 2008, 08:56:22 AM
Sega announced yet another Genesis compilation with some Master System unlockables. The games will be upscaled to 720p. There are some awesome genesis games missing but for now the game list is pretty solid.
The developer is Backbone who did the 360 XBLA genesis games if I remember correctly.
• THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF CLASSIC SEGA TITLES. All the favorites are here including Sonic The Hedgehog, four titles from the Phantasy Star™ series, as well as three titles from the Streets of Rage™ series, to name a few.
• UNLOCKABLE CONTENT. Unlock arcade games and interviews with the original game developers as you earn Achievements on the Xbox 360® and Trophies on the PLAYSTATION®3.
• ALL TITLES UPGRADED TO HI-DEF. The classic 2D style never looked so good! Each of the titles has been converted to hi-def (720p) and will be a blast to play using the intuitive controls of the Xbox 360® and PLAYSTATION®3 systems.
• MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER OPTIONS. Play these classics together with a friend from the same console at home.
GAMES INCLUDE:
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle Alien Storm Altered Beast Beyond Oasis Bonanza Bros. Columns Comix Zone Decap Attack starring Chuck D. Head Dr. Robotnik's MBM Dynamite Headdy Ecco the Dolphin Ecco II: The Tides of Time E-SWAT Fatal Labyrinth Flicky Gain Ground Golden Axe I Golden Axe II Golden Axe III Kid Chameleon Phantasy Star II Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium Ristar Shining in the Darkness Shining Force Shining Force 2 Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master Sonic 3D Blast Sonic and Knuckles Sonic Spinball Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Streets of Rage Streets of Rage 2 Streets of Rage 3 Super Thunder Blade Vectorman Vectorman 2
*Unlockable games to be revealed soon!

Just saw a Sonic 1 screenshot, and it looks bloody AWFUL after being shoved through a sheen filter... =\

I read somewhere (don't recall where) that there's an option to turn off the "updated" graphics and revert back to the classic look.

Yeah...these packs are pretty stupid when you can just get them for free. Eventually companies like Sega and *cough* Nintendo *cough* need to stop trying to sell you the same fucking games on ever console.

More like the classic look should be standard and the "updated" crap should be the option...

The whole thing sounds mostly like the Mega Drive Collection with a few more games, not a big upgrade IMO.

I turned them off instantly in SOTN on the 360.

The only game that's actually been remade with REAL enhanced graphics is Street Fighter 2 HD Remix. Everything else just uses a filter on the original graphics.

I'm going to bump this, I am actually excited for it after hearing the Retronauts episode! Can't wait to play the arcade version of Space Harrier.

Yea, I initially ignored this, but now I'm kind of pumped.
I mean, its almost 50 games for $30. That's amazing!

Dunno, I bought the Megadrive Collection for the PS2 already.

Did you read IGN's special comparing these games to the Virtual Console...basically saying that this game is better in all areas to the Virtual Console market.
Except that they forgot to take into consideration, that the VC has had several of these games out for awhile giving gamers a chance to play them sooner...and if you don't want all these games you can pick and choose the games you want to play and possibly pay less, though probably not.
These compilations really do show that the VC games are overpriced by around a dollar or 2.

The only reason to not release this on the Wii is because they can charge more selling them individually on the VC. That's really abusing the VC a fair bit, you know? It isn't really fair to Wii owners to charge them $7 a game and less than $1 to PS3 and Xbox 360 owners just because the model exists to charge more to Wii users.
I believe this will be the first time arcade perfect Shinobi will be available to North American gamers. For a purist this may be worth it just for that. We really should have arcade games on the VC though.

I personally prefer the atmosphere of the Virtual Console over putting a disc in...
Well, I would if I didn't have to clean the fridge so much.

Ya know, it would be a great olive branch if Nintendo let them sell all these games as a bundle on VC for a cheaper price.

Hmmmm...I guess the collection is good if you don't have a Wii or emulator. I already own most of those in the original cart format anyway. I agree though that the VC should have more "deals" and bundles of classic games. I am still waiting for Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma bundle ;)

The collection is for you if you haven't bought the PS2 one already, I'd say the massively lower price makes it useful even if you do have a Wii. Though I feel like collections devalue the individual games, I don't feel much interest towards games in a collection like that and am quicker to abandon them when I hit something I don't like much because there's dozens of other games in the collection that I still have to try anyway.

KDR: You bring up an interesting point.
When you buy a collection you are basically getting 20+ games all at once. I play games usually one at a time and if I stop playing I may never go back. So I try to finish a game before buying a new one. There are so many VC games I have and only got have way through before I just stopped playing, not because I hated the game, but because I moved on.
Yes collections are cheaper, but it does come with that problem of devaluing each individual experience.

Oh c'mon, complaining that a product is more extensive then stealing the same thing via an emulator isn't even a valid complaint. A company has the right to make money on its wares.
I also like these kinds of collections because the finite space on the Wii means I have to keep deleting stuff; if it's all on its own disc, then I'm alright. I passed over the PS2 collection (I got it for the PSP, but that's not the same). I'll be getting it mainly for the Streets of Rage games, which were so cruelly removed from the USA version of the Sonic Gems Collection, though if they could ever release their old Saturn games in any format, that'd be nice...

Self control is the best cure for "OMG so many awesome games, I should only be getting one awesome game". Anyway I've played through a few of the games so far, and while I may not be the best judge about emulation since many of these games I have never played (some I played a long time ago) it appears really REALLY good. I even play them in 16/9 mode with the smoothing on and they still look good. Anyway I really suggest you get this game if you like, even a couple of the games on it. It is a great collection (I love the Genesis carts selection screen). The only issue I've encountered is at the end of the second act where you have to run ahead of a big battle plane dropping bombs, the sound crackles for some reason.

GP it's backbone when they develop something they are usually bound to screw up something. SFII HD Remix is glitchy in a number of aspects and the online code isn't that great as well. And in Age of Empires:Age of Kings for the DS which Backbone developed, the touch screen controls are a bit off.

Well I've played some more and so far I have ZERO complaints regarding emulation in other games. Looks like they did a really good job!
