It's not every day that Nintendo announces new hardware, a storage "solution", and over a dozen cool new games.  We abandoned the traditional episode format to bring you tons and tons of news analysis from Nintendo's Fall Media Summit.  In fact, there's so much info that we had to break it up into two segments.  Hear us rant about the upgraded DSi handheld, SD card storage, Club Nintendo, Punch-Out, Sin & Punishment 2, Cave Story, GameCube remakes for Wii, and the weird new Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.  We're also totally in love with Let's Tap... or at least its theme song.

Be sure to listen for next week's show, when we bring in "the other Briton" for TGS talk!

I don't mean to be a jerk by saying this, because I know James busts his hump for RFN, but there was too much talking over each other in this episode. Frankly, it gave me a headache at places.

Especially for you TYP, I can personally guarantee you will not hear me talk over anyone at anytime in the next RFN.

Maybe if you used two different Remote/box setups, one for left and one for right.  You'd still need some way to handle the clapping input, but I wouldn't consider that a deal breaker.  Clapping is the worst part of DKJB anyway.

Would Nintendo be willing to package it with a cardboard box?

They would if they thought they could charge $50 for it then.

I would imagine most people have at least two wiimotes. And I though Let's Tap could sense left and right hands?

How would it do that exactly?  No, Let's Tap knows if you're tapping or not tapping, and how fast.  That's all.

Schadenfreude, it looks like Sega is providing a specially made box for it in Japan, so we'll probably get the same... if it ever comes out here.

TYP, nice idea!  That would really limit the market, though, and DKJB has already had sales problems related to peripherals.

Everyone was talking over each other and going too fast.

Relax guys, we don't mind if you have to skip some stuff that didn't get discussed because of the last weeks issues.

(On a lighter note, I sometimes notice Jonny exhales very loudly during the podcast [usually when James butts in]. He sounds like he wants to kill someone. I like it.)

I'm glad I listened to this, I hadn't paid enough attention to the DS announcements and hadn't heard about the new Wario Ware and Picross 3D, both of which sound amazing.

On a side note, James' Apple bashing has made it so I no longer have any sympathy for how hard it is for him to do the podcast, no matter how many problems there are or how many limbs he loses.

So you guys talk about the "storage solution" going no farther than letting people save their purchases directly to the SD card.

I was still holding out hope that they were going to speed up the process of getting them on the system memory in some form...

If all this is is the ability to buy games and put them on your SD card and THAT'S IT... then I DISAGREE with Jonny completely on being "happy" they are doing something.  That's total **** and can't be called a solution.  I've already taught myself to check the game size online before going to the store to make sure I get the space cleared out.  All that would do is make it so I could do that step after purchasing it instead of before.  It doesn't save me ANY time.  It's no freaking different...

Argh.. now I'm all pissed off.

Pale, none of us really know what exactly it entails. Nintendo really did not clarify much beyond it being a faster process and downloading directly to the SD card. For all we know it could be something similar to what Guitar Hero utilizes.

Nintendo is just being Nintendo, in that we can never be sure how something will work until they release it.

It's called Aquanaut's Holiday and is a sequel to a PSone game by Iida, who also did Tail of the Sun and Doshin the Giant.

I agree that the lack of MP3 support is truly absurd.  The only consumers that will have AAC that they can play on the DSi will already have an Ipod or Iphone thus negating the whole point of upgrading to a DSi.

Some people upthread were right; there did seem to be many instances of people talking over one another this episode.

I enjoyed the episode, though!

I'd have to say that there is nothing about the DSi that I find particularly compelling; but, it probably will give me occassion to buy a DS Lite once the price drops a bit.  Like Crimm, I only have a DS fat.  I haven't wanted to spend the money to upgrade yet, but I'm notoriously cheap.

Given that Nintendo was pleased with the sales of Sin & Punishment for the Wii, then I do have to wonder why they haven't chosen to release Earthbound.  It's a baffling decision, really, since the series has had a somewhat vocal and dedicated fanbase.  It's almost a cult. :P   I imagine that if Earthbound were released on the VC, many of them would probably buy the game (even though they've already played it) just on the hope that it would encourage Nintendo would finally release Mother 3 here.  Just IMHO, though.

I have Doshin on GameCube (the Japanese version), and I never liked it much.  It's interesting to play around with for a while, but I got bored with it quickly.

I'm listening to 118 now, and there is way too much of my breathing in the audio.  I must have had the headset microphone placed incorrectly.  Sorry about that, everyone!  (And no, I wasn't sighing at James... I do it throughout the show.  It's not sighing, just heavy breathing because I talk too much and run out of breath.)

Not to say Little Big Planet will be GOTY (still too early), but I definately concur with Silks on that last sentiment.  When I popped in that Beta, it provided that "magical" feeling I haven't felt since Mario 64.  Screenshots and videos can be deceiving, you really just have to try it for yourself.

Hey Jonny, here's another reason why to get the Wii version of FFCC: EoT: getting the DS online sucks. I was able to years ago for Mario Kart DS, but when I tried earlier this year I had no luck.

Re:  3D Picross

I think 3D Picross would actually be easier than the traditional 2D game.  It seems like it you could be more confident in guessing which cells were marked once you get going because you can "lead" the model more than you can in 2D Picross.  For example, using your dog model example, when you get to the edge of the dog's body you can reasonably assume that the model thickness will get thinner after each layer (e.g. the thickest part of the body is 10 rows, and when it gets to the edge it will quickly round off the model by moving to 8 rows, then 6, then 4 and finally 2).

Of course, I've sunk well over 100 hours into Picross DS (best $20 I've ever spent) so maybe I'm not the average player.

Actually, no.  :)  I don't do anything while using the bathroom except ... you know ... the obvious.  I'm still relatively young, so it's not like it takes me a half hour to poop.  I really don't need to bring anything along to entertain myself.

The vast majority was either right before bed or while "watching" television (usually either Simpsons reruns or--more recently--election coverage).

I thought I read somewhere Nintendo was switching from an encryption-based system for VC/WiiWare to a DRM-based system-from what I understood this would yield a massive increase in transfer speed.

Also, I was wondering if they were removing the GBA-era processor from the DSi-that might sound like a given, but they might use it to run GBA games via DSWare (The DSi should have enough horsepower to emulate 8-bit GB/GBC/NES games on its own, but newer ones might need the other processor).

I also have one idea that's so crazy it just might happen-what if they put the original Pokemon games on DSWare and Stadium on the VC, then let you interface the two? ;)

They can't remove the processor that provides GBA compatibility, it's one of the two that are used by DS games.

The update basically changes Wii Points to Nintendo Points.  I'm surprised they even bothered to do it this early outside of Japan, since we're not getting the DSi for a long time.

I'm not convinced about the camera resolutions -- every credible source I read had 0.3 MP for both lenses (hence my assertion that it's just a single camera with two lenses).  Please show me a good source for this 3.0 MP info.
