Title: Aspirations in life. What are yours?
Post by: Stogi on September 15, 2008, 05:50:34 PM
As someone from Sudan, I feel it's my obligation to go back and at least try to fix some of the major concerns Sudanese face today.
Health - Sudanese still face diseases that are essentially non-existent in countries abroad. One being Malaria and the other Yellow Fever. These two things could be eradicated if proper hygiene and overall better waste management was introduced, but as of right now, people still discard of human waste by shitting in a hole and discard of dirty water by tossing it out on the sun-baked "streets". A proper water and waste management system is vital to any country wanting to be first world. This needs to change.
Energy - Sudanese electricity is probably one of the worst managed in the world. You can't rely on it, so food that is bought that day must be eaten that day. Sudan has a lot of natural resources, but it's the infrastructure that is fleeting. Part of the infrastructure most also use renewable resources that will slash the outrage costs of electricity today. Over the past 10 years it has been getting better, but it still needs to fundamentally change.
Roads - Sudan has some of the worst roads ever. There is rarely any pavement. Most roads are simply the ground. People have trouble traveling long distances because of this. And it's also why people rarely own cars and also another reason why public transportation is so bad. Most importantly, businesses need roads to transport goods. Roads and energy together could make for a huge economical boom. This needs to change.
Farms - People who are considered rich own farms. Even though Sudan is the biggest country in Africa, we still import wheat and grain. Proper water management is needed so farmers can arrogate their crops and finally put a back bone into the national economy.
I have a pretty clear plan on how to fix these problems, but it's all about money. I'm going to college, but I may start my own business before I graduate. I already have a business plan and the proper alliances to get it off the ground, I just need money.
Once my business is off the ground though, it'll only be a matter of years before I turn it over to someone I trust and start my own parent corporation that will either invest, or use my money to literally build some ideas I have just sitting here. Times change though, so I know I'll have to keep ahead of the curve in terms of ideas; but all it takes is that one big idea to get onto the national scene. Afterwords, I'll sprout sister companies, and angel investors.
Once my corporation starts to take hold and finds footing in the national market, this is when I'll call on a select few of my relationships I've created as well as my three brothers and start handling business in other parts of the world including Japan, China, Europe, and especially South America. I have no idea what I'll invest in just yet, but just like Donald, it's going to be varied.
Finally, once my corporation is settled in the international world, I'll turn it into a not-for-profit and use all the resources, partnerships, and activists that I can find to help rebuild Sudan; from the bottom up. Building will be tough and take a long time, but it'll have the eyes of the world watching ever step. Hope and praise will flood into Sudan. People will finally be happier.
Once everything is built and money starts flooding back into the system; Sudan will become the jewel of Africa. I'll immediately start construction on "The Tower of Sudan" which will be located right where the blue and white Nile meet. It'll be glorious; gorgeous; a shining example of the new coming out of the old; The Tower of Sudan. From there, I'll invest in Sudan. New business projects of every kind will take shape, allowing people to find jobs in whatever field they so choose. I'll call on other African countries to follow suit and point at the economic success of Sudan. "Build from the bottom up" I'll say, campaigning in other countries for those that don't have a voice. Hopefully, with some luck, the governments will heed my words.
This is where I really hope I can make a difference. If they truly listen, after the initial industrial phase, African countries will become more self dependent and start truly making markets that the international world will call "viable". That's when I'll try to start AFTA (African Free Trade Association). This will help stop the trickling of resources to other countries that are not African by making trading with other African nations more lucrative. This will boost the trade within Africa and finally let companies and investors within Africa thrive. This would in turn boost Africa's entire GDP and finally let Africa as a continent come together after so many years of strife and start building itself as a whole (the only way it can work). If money then comes into Africa from the world abroad, there will be no more need for such harsh unethical trade conglomerates that allow blood diamonds to be so influential.
After trying to plant the seed of growth within the heart of Africa, I will retire; traveling all over the world and doing what I love: listening to new music, making music, meeting new people, and finding more to life than myself.
Some where in there, I hope to find a women who is as passionate and as free-thinking as myself and maybe start a family and have some children.

Stogi has a very detailed aspiration. So detailed it probably won't come true. I've always tried to keep my goals and aspirations small and realistic. Probably everyone has some fantastic dreams but I feel it's important to remain rooted in reality. It's easier to be content if something small and seemingly minor makes you happy.:)
I would love to be a professional musician or film maker. But those are dream jobs that even if you have the talent rely on a lot of luck to get. So I make the goal realistic and achievable. I've always wanted to write and record a song that's really good and say "I did that". Well I have. I don't have a record contract but I've written some damn good songs that I'm very proud of. With film making I've made some short films I'm quite proud of and I'm currently filming my first full length film. I've always wanted to do this and I'm doing it and I think it's going to turn out pretty good. I'm going to try to enter it in film festivals and hopefully that will work out. What I really want though is to show the film to all my friends and make them laugh and see them entertained by it. Making the film is the aspiration. Success with it would be a fantasy come true. But making a good film I can be proud of is the goal and that is what makes me content.
When I was a teen I had plans to go to college and get a career in computing which I've done. I wanted to be financially responsible and save to get a car and a house and now I've done both of those.
I want to get married some day and have kids and try my best to raise them into good people. This is the one aspiration that relies a lot on luck. You can do whatever you can but finding the right person and having them be single and having them regard you as the right person for them is a crap shoot. Most of my other goals put a lot of control in my own hands. Making the film is very much something I can just do. Having the film be successful enough that I can be a film maker for a living? That relies on a lot of things going right beyond my control which is why the goal is to make a good movie and the success is just gravy. The wife is the one aspiration where the lucky success is a requirement and not a bonus.
But I'm still young and confident that when the opportunity presents itself I won't screw it up. I have no regrets about how I could have done things differently in past failed relationships. When something relies partially on your hard work and partially on things beyond your control, make sure you always do your part to the best of your abilities. Better to lose out on things beyond your control than to have opportunities handed to you on a platter and waste them with a weak effort.
Though thinking about it my aspirations are mostly very personal with no real grands plans to help the world. Maybe that's selfish? I've thought that sometimes but I don't seek wealth or power and never want to step on anyone else's toes to get what I want. I do want to raise my kids to be good people and hopefully that will contribute to the world in a postive way, even if it's a small one.

Stogi has a very detailed aspiration. So detailed it probably won't come true.
I don't understand? Isn't it better to have a detailed plan, with small realistic steps, then an overarching ambition with no form of compass?
Plus, I always have believed you can do whatever you put your mind to. Yes there's luck involved, but if your so interested in filming and music, why don't you put all of your energy into it? What is stopping you? Work?
Don't let the rat race of life stop you from living the way you want to. You'll regret it.
P.S. Thank you, Maxi. I hope you achieve your goals as well.
P.S.S. Maybe you'll see me one day with a Nobel Peace Prize. Oh God, I would love that.

Sorry I rarely read those topics. It's like watching reality television.
I should let you know then that if you wanna work at Nintendo, you should expect to work at NST or NOA because if your not Japanese your chances of getting into NCL are less than 5%. I'm just saying.

Goals, huh? I must admit that I've always been the kind of guy that takes things as they come. However, I do have a vague outlook of where I want my life to go.
As "eccentric" as I am, I'm actually a pretty simple guy. Right now I'm in my second year of medical school, and I have another 7 odd years of schooling ahead of me, so that much is already etched in stone. Outside of that, I would like to get married and have kids, as being a father is my ultimate aspiration...I would also like to pursue some other hobbies I never had time for and/or don't have much time for now, such as expanding my Japanese knowledge base, learning to play the piano and violin (my favorite instruments to listen to), hiking in places I haven't been before, and I also would like to seriously work on the stories I have been churning in my head for years...
Simple, yet satisfying... ^_^

Much like Bill, I'd like to start a family. In the mean time, I'm just trying to get my bachelor's in accounting and looking at internship opportunities. I'll probably work for Target for like 2-3 years before pursuing my MBA and CPA. After that, I'm not too sure. I'll have to scope out my options as they come. Either way, I want a nice house to raise my kids in. Nothing too fancy, just enough for people too look at and say, "Wow, those guys must be doing well."

Wrong, failing to plan is planning to fail.

Graduated, moved out of home, moved interstate, started a new job last week. Too busy to make any more short-term goals aside from surviving this new job and enjoying my time in a new city.
EDIT: I should clarify that this has happened in the last month (with the last three happening in the last fortnight).

I'm just going on personal experience. Nothing ever seems to go exactly as planned so I try to be flexible and roll with the punches. I guess I see people have one-shot plans blow up and the idea of having everything you've worked for turn to sh!t is depressing. The Olympics were on recently and some people clearly have a plan to win the gold and they realistically only have one shot at it and tons of them blow it. But if your goal is to compete in the Olympics and do your best then you don't fail - medal or not. You would be more content with eighth then the guy who had to win would be with fourth.
It might just be what works for me. I'm not very competitive. Part of it might be that I don't win very often so having more personal goals is how I can avoid being disappointed all the time. Part of it I know is I'm too damn mature and responsible so quiting my job to fully pursue a music career seems too risky.
Though I have realized I don't like my job and my brother is determined that if my film isn't selected by any festivals and isn't picked up for any distribution we'll do it ourselves as a direct-to-DVD release and we're going to make his movie idea next. If we can we'd like to make movies for a living. We don't have to be rich but if we could make the same amount of money we already make now that would be great. Again though that's a little more low key. I don't need to be the big millionaire superstar. I just want to make good films. Doing that for a job would give me more time to do it.

Hey didn't we have one of these a while back? "What is your dream?"
I will one day have my own animal television show! You'll see! You'll all see... That's my ultimate goal, I have smaller goals a few I have already achieved. But by the end of the year I hope to land it least one print job, and one commercial!
I like that KashogiStogi wants to make a real difference and help people in the world. I'm all for it, and love to help people to, but it seems like a process that is not adventurous enough for me. I'd much rather protect an old lady from a knife wielding maniac, though very small scale compared to yours, I'd be more satisfied with that.

I'm majoring in art right now. I guess you would have to call me a surrealist. I would like to do something with my art in life.
I only really want a modest living. Also long I can pay my bills and still have just a little cash left over, i'll be happy.

well I've changed my lifes goals so much over the years I am not so sure I really know what I want anymore. Aside from the simple life I really desperately seek all I want from life is to live in my own house with just my wife and nobody else. I'd really love it if I could live off the land so to speak and never have to work for someone else again (the way things look my dream is coming half true) and maybe someday learn to have fun.

Same here. I used to be really ambitious and have such high aspirations, but I'm over that now. I think I could very comfortably live on $35,000/year (ie - nice apartment, car, vacations, etc.), considering I save most of my money.
Right now I just really want to get my degree and get out of school. I'm so sick of it. This is my 6th year in college. I've taken 2 semesters off and changed my major twice, but I'm finally going to finish in May and get that ridiculously expensive piece of paper that says, "Hi, I'm employable."
After that, I want to live on my own, which is harder than it sounds. New Jersey is so damn expensive. My county is relatively cheap (meaning a 1 bedroom apartment costs ~$800/month), but there are absolutely no jobs here outside of the healthcare and service industries. If I live near where I go to school, which is more technology and science oriented, that's gonna be at least $1000/month for an apartment. And this is if I can find a job in a state where unemployment just reached 6%. My sister-in-law can get me a job at News Corp. in New York once I have my degree, but I don't know how I can live in or near Manhattan on an entry level salary.
So, yeah. Finish school, get a job, get an apartment. Not very lofty goals, but they're not exactly going to come by easily.
