Title: XBLA: Which Game Should I Get Next?
Post by: NWR_DrewMG on September 12, 2008, 09:26:23 AM
Okay, so I've challenged myself not to buy any more games until years end. It's a self imposed challenge, tempered by my 2-at-a-time Gamefly membership and the one-time caveat of getting Tecmo Bowl DS when it comes out in a few months.
So, with that in mind, I picked the wrong time, as an XBox 360 owner, to not buy any games. See, I can rent all the games I want from Gamefly, but that won't include downloadable titles. I managed to snag Geometry Wars 2 before this self imposed restriction began. But then there were a ton of awesome XBLA games that came out.
So I went to gamestop last night and did the trade of shame (read: any trade-in at Gamestop) which earned me enough for a 1600 point XBLA card.
Castle Crashers and Braid are both 1200 points, meaning I can pretty much only get one game. BC: Rearmed is only 800, and I'm not sure on the price for Galaga.
Basically, what I'm getting at is that I can only get one of the games listed above. What should it be?

My favorite of those listed is Braid, but Castle Crashers has a lot more replay value.

I loved the Castle Crashers demo, but it's probably worth noting that I don't have a TON of people to play with online or locally. It'd probably be a pretty major event if I managed to get a 4 player game going.

Only get Braid if your ready for hours of trial & error.

If you really want Castle Crashers I would hold on to that 1600 point card for a while until they fix some bugs that are in the game. At least they said they're working on it, which is a good thing because I remember when the game came out and Schadenfraude (I think it was him) was inviting me to play in his game and I could never connect. Why? Connectivity issues that are being addressed.
That's a tough decision man. I can't even specifically suggest anything. I personally would go for BCR because it's only 800 points which in turn would leave you another 800 points for another great game other than those on your list.

Yeah, I gave that some serious thought. I need to give each of these demos a more serious go. I've only put a few minutes into the Braid and Galaga demos.

While there is trial and error, I personally felt pretty satisfied when I completed a difficult puzzle. It's not like in older games where you were penalized for messing up timing or experimenting.
Castle Crashers is still pretty fun by itself, but it's much more challenging. I think two players is the sweet spot; three can work but four is just too chaotic.

I'd get Bionic Commando: Rearmed. Braid is cool, but I got kinda tired of it.

If you're looking for something that is potentially thought-provoking and could change the way you look at storytelling in video games, go for Braid. The key word there is "potentially," though. A lot of people think the story is crap and the puzzles are too hard. I thought it was a beautiful game that I wish I could play for the first time over and over.

I don't see Ultimate MK3 on that list...

Mainly because they can't choose UMK3...

I played the BC Rearmed demo on PS3 and found it a bore. The controlling mechanics definitely threw me off.

I ended up going with Bionic Commando. Unfortunately, I also spent 80 points on Skullcrusher Mountain for Rock Band, so now I'm below the 800 for another game. I don't think it'd be breaking the rules too much if I threw five dollars onto my XBL account for another 800 point game. Especially since I set the rules to begin with.
And I'd probably get Soul Caliber if I was going to get a fighting game.

Bionic Commando is alright. If you've never played it before, it's worth the 800 space bucks.

You're all Nazis.
Castle Crashers is the way to go.

I'd get Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Rez HD at 800 points each. Rez HD is awesome and so is Bionic Commando.

Rez doesn't become amazing until the final stage however.

I vote Galaga, because I love Galaga...one of the best arcade games ever.
