Title: Metallica - Death Magnetic
Post by: BranDonk Kong on August 22, 2008, 10:00:40 PM
I don't know about you...but I'm really looking forward to this album. "The Day That Never Comes" (the first single, released a couple days ago) is already better than anything they've put out in the past 17 years (Ok, Unforgiven II is pretty great), and "Cyanide" (they played it at Ozzfest...it's on YouTube) is already just as good, if not better, that the first single, IMO. They really sound a lot tighter than they have in years, and Rob Trujillo actually sound like a member of the band, you can hear him groove on the bass, rather than just pick along with Lars' kick pedal.

Dunno, I'm only interested if I can easily rip the tracks to OGG, music has zero value to me if I need to use my disc drive for it (can't mix with the rest of the playlist, the drive usually contains either a game or is left empty to prevent noisy spinups) or can't even play it at all on a PC (I used to have a CD player... somewhere... stopped caring years ago...). Music CDs these days are more infectious than porn sites, right?

Well it's going to be on iTunes, and surely other sites too. You can even download a WMA version of the single from metallica.com, I think they've realized that people want music on their computers, the "digital version" (I use quotes, because CDs are digital too) even has 1 more track than the CD.

Who would really pay for a Metallica album nowadays? Hell, St. Anger wasn't even worth pirating. Outside of the two or three decent tracks from Load and ReLoad, the band died after making the Black Album. Of course, cutting off all of their hair and then later whining about their emotional problems on DVD didn't do anything to help...

My advice? They should kick out Lars and regroup. Midgets can't play rock n' roll.

The single really is pretty decent and much better than expected. Stanger is not only the worst Metallica CD ever made, it very well maybe the worst album of all time. If they can bring back even a taste of the greatness of the glory days (pre Black album) the CD will be good enough in my book.

I can tell you haven't grabbed that free NIN album if you make statments like that.

I was gonna complain, then remembered that S&M's idea and arrangements were all Michael Kamen's

Actually I take that statement back. No Leaf Clover was fucking awesome, I wish they would release a studio version of it. "Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel was just a freight train coming your way" - that's a pretty awesome line right there.

The Slip isn't a bad album, if you're a hardcore NIN fan.  It's just... boring.  It's listenable and the songs grow on you over time, it just feels like no time was taken at all on making the music outstanding.  It's simply more of the same.  I still enjoy it, but it is definitely my least favorite NIN album ever.  "Fixed" doesn't count.

Holy fucking **** dude, you are so right. This album is blowing me away.

Yeah, I listened to basically the whole thing in my car today, and it's bad-fucking-ass. Unforgiven 3 is a masterpiece. The only song that's kind of iffy is Suicide and Redemption, it's not as diverse as Orion, the Call of Ktulu, or To Live is to Die, pretty repetetive, but the slow "clean" part is pretty cool. I can't wait until the actual release, to see what the digital-only song is. I might even go buy the deluxe CD, since you get all types of cool ****, including the full album for download in Guitar Hero 3.

THERE'S AN UNFORGIVEN 33333333333333333333333?????????????????

Question.  Does Hetfield's voice sound drowned-out throughout the album, as if the vocal volume should be a bit higher and sharper?

Nope, but he definitely doesn't sound as raw as he did pre-Black album either. I'd say vocally he sounds somewhere in the range of Load/Reload.

No, the vocal track definitely needs a ~25-33% boost.

It depends on your EQ, really. I hear him loud and clear in my car...maybe you have a bad rip. He definitely sounds sharper than he did on St Anger (I hate the unrefined sound of that album). And yes, there's an Unforgiven 3, and yes, it's fucking awesome. I really like Unforgiven 2, but this one fucking blows it out of the water, the solo is incredible (pays homage to the original in the beginning, then Kirk Hammet goes off for at least a good minute it seems).

How can I be lost, if I've got nowhere to go?
Search for seas of gold, how come it's got so cold?
How can I be lost, in the memories I relive?
How can I blame you, when it's me I can't forgive?

Some people heard the first song ("The Day that Never Comes") and said it sounds like they're "forcing" the old-school style. To those people: listen to the album, and then eat your words. I don't know if I'll get anyone's agreement here, but to me this is their second-best album ever ("...and Justice for All" being first).

This album was decent at best. I think seeing as Metallica didn't put out an album that was complete trash, it's making you blind to what it really is. It's not trash so it must be great, right? No. It's mediocre.

I disagree 100%, but we're all entitled to our own opinions. I don't think they've ever put out an album that was *complete* trash, either.

I also disagree, the album is great and easily better than Load/Reload and leagues better than that POS Stanger.

Kill 'Em All > Ride the Lightning = Master of Puppets > ... And Justice For All > Black Album = Death Magnetic > Load > Reload >>>>>>>>>>>> St. Anger

St. anger was complete trash to me, sorry.

luckily it was a gift from my 'die-hard' metallica friend.

And Justice For All is my fave album of theres, and if this ones getting compared to that i might just have to give it a listen, but honest.. i dont think i care for them any more. I feel like they're one of those bands that keeps putting out music, but when you go see them all you want to hear is the old stuff, and when they play the new stuff you get angry an feel like they're forcing it on you. There are very few bands i feel that way about, its too bad this is one of them.

I think its because i stopped listening after the black album

So the full album will be on GH3 Friday...also, it's forward-compatible with GHWT. I take back what I said about Suicide and Redemption, that song is fucking awesome. There will be 2 versions in GH3/WT I believe.

Guess who my new favorite band is?

HOLY ****! I have liked Metallica a lot before, but never, ever more than System of a Down.

Wow.

Death Magnetic is fucking amazing. It makes System of a Down look like crap. Oh my god.

Any comments on how the Guitar Hero versions of the songs are better quality than those on the CD? I was planning on picking the album up, but now I think I'll hold off and see if something better is released.

Kotaku has a side by side comparison and the difference is very noticable.

If I want loud music, I'll turn my speakers up.

Yeah the difference between the two was striking. I'm hoping someone drops a GH rip ... somewhere ... for me to ... "obtain." Does kind of make me regret buying the CD. I chalked up the distortion on the CD to a bad rip, I downloaded prerelease, but I guess that's just the mastering.

There is a GH3 rip on the internet, but there are a couple glitches on it, which completely ruin the experience, though as a whole it does sound a lot better than the retail release. I'll try to remake a GH3 rip on my own, and if I do...I might let some people know how, or where, to get it.

The album's pretty good.  Much better than St. anger, not saying st. anger completely sucked...It sucked by metallica standards.  Frantic was a pretty good track.  Still better than a lot of the gunk Slipknot and Disturbed give us IMO.

I like My Apocalypse the best so far.  The beginning sounds like a heavier intro to "Just What I Needed" to me. LOL.

Well...
I do like it more than anything SOAD has done... Okay, I don't think I could ever seriously call System of a Down crap. But I do like this Metallica CD way more than any SOAD stuff.

You have no idea.

I would do terrible, horrible things to go to that Metallica concert coming up in Milwaukee. My friend Casey is going and he said that he would pay for half of my ticket. He said he is getting front row seats... I'll believe that when I see it, but any seat would drive me insane just to be there, so I'm going to get that money... which I don't have... I hope he can get tickets.

Seats? At a Metallica concert? That doesn't make any sense. Rage Against the Machine played in West Palm (with Wu-Tang Clan), and the audience tore just about every seat out of the stadium.

... well, I'm just saying, I have my heart set on getting tickets to that concert. If I stop posting, assume I've been moshed to death.
