This weekend TheSpeedGamers, a group that does gaming marathons in order to raise money for charity, will be doing a live stream of their 72-hour Metroid marathon.  They will be collecting donations to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the world leader in the treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic diseases.  They start streaming on Friday at 6 PM Pacific, continuing through Sunday.

The marathon will be streamed live on their website.  They will be playing Metroid, Metroid II: Return of Samus, Metroid: Zero Mission, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Metroid Fusion, and Metroid Prime Hunters.  During each game they will be giving away copies of the classic titles, including a copy of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption signed by the staff of Retro Studios themselves.

I donated bulk money to their Zelda speed test and they even failed by miles.

I donated $20 bucks because the article was edited less than an hour after I wrote it.

72 hours? Isn't that a bit long for those games?

Thats what i thought... seeing as metroid prime can be done in less than 3..

I'd say it's about right. If you've only beaten them before once or twice, would probably take me that long. 15-18 hours for each Prime, split the rest. Plus there's lots of time wasting available in the Prime titles if it needs to be filled, just by looking around the sexy levels.

I'm tempted to try this along with these guys, i'm playing Prime 3 right now and in a Metroid mood, plus i've still never played Super Metroid. Oh wait it's already started. God it's boring.

i feel sorry for whomever will play Hunters speed run. Controls are odd, but its one of the most boring "metroid" games ever.

Well, for speeedruns if you go into the double digits hour-wise you're doing something seriously wrong.

Oh god they've got some moron girl belting out terrible songs. I included a note with my donation saying i'd double it if she shut up, but I guess she didn't read it. No doubling here.

On behalf of The Speed Gamers, we'd like to thank everyone who tuned in, and especially NintendoWorldReport for posting an article about us. You've been in my bookmarks for years and it was a thrill to see us on your page!

We beat all the games in 48 hours, including Pinball as a bonus, and filled out the rest of the time going back to 100% Prime 1 and Super Metroid, and replay Zero Mission, Fusion, and the original NES game. Altogether we raised over 6000 dollars for St. Jude!

Check us out in two weeks for our big team-up with Starmen.net for a massive Earthbound SIEGE!

Edit: Forgot to mention, I was the player for Hunters... and while I didn't think it was boring, playing on the rig we made to show the gameplay nearly killed my wrist! I'm grateful I finished it in 4:21 because my left hand might have fallen off.

I'm sorry I didn't get the story out sooner.  Still, proud of our guys for getting that edit done quickly.

Congrats on the great turn-out and thanks for doing this.
