Title: I've been playing a lot of Gamecube lately
Post by: Mysticspike on August 03, 2008, 10:58:35 PM
About three weeks ago, I started to play less Wii and more Gamecube, because frankly, the Wii games are getting boring. Anyways, I have sooo many more Gamecube games than Wii games, so the past few weeks (except for the time I've been in Florida) I've been playing a lot of Gamecube, S.S.B. Melee for about a week and than Starfox Adventures for about a week also (before Florida, about a half a week, and then today and yesturday a little). And I really got into Starfox Adventures, and just beat it a few minutes ago, and I want more, but, sadly, there is not Starfox Adventures 2... yet.
SO The point of this is that I was wondering if anyone knows of any games that are a lot like Starfox Adventures that would interest me, because I really liked it, and I want to know if there are any other games like it.

Beyond Good and Evil

It is a game (in addition to being a book by Nietzsche)
And it is pretty similar to Star Fox Adventures. It's almost as if Ancel played SFA and said "Hey, let's make a game like this, except good" (not realizing that game already existed in the form of Zelda.)
tried finishing pikmin. Still in the Distant Spring and getting raped (though not as raped as my first time)
You could play without trying to win. I hear the bad ending is pretty funny.

I love my Cube. Here's my tier list again:
F-Zero GX Pikmin 2 Super Smash Bros Melee
Eternal Darkness Donkey Kong Jungle Beat Super Mario Sunshine
Metroid Prime Zelda: Wind Waker Resident Evil 4.
What an amazing console. I wish some of you had actually enjoyed it rather than complaining on forums about it.

I've only beaten 2 GameCube games: Wind Waker and King Kong. (I also beat Beyond Good and Evil, but I played the PC version.)

If you like Star Fox Adventures then play Zelda. No one really is suggesting that because it sounds obvious but that's what you should play if you like SFA.
Note that all other Star Fox games are shooters. SFA is the oddball spin-off.

yeah i agree with Beyond Good and Evil. I loved that game.
I fail to understand how you could enjoy Star Fox Adventures though, I out grew collect-o-thons back in the n64 era. I never got far in Stupid Jet Force Gemini because I hated collecting things.
You'll be surprised what games you can buy cheap for cube. I bought Crazy Taxi and NFL Blitz 2003 for $5 a piece. And both are still fun for a little while.

Vega, YOU DID get far in JFG if you don't like collecting things because the only thing you ever have to collect is at the end you have to collect Tribals. THATS IT. Other than that it's an action game.
SFA isn't un-enjoyable. It's just okay.

Yeah, I am aware of both of the two things you just said. And yes, SFA is very different from the other starfox games, but I just really like the style of the game.

SFA wasn't even supposed to be a Star Fox game at all. IIRC, it started as some original game idea by Rare, but then Nintendo hiijacked it and shoe-horned the Star Fox characters into it.

The only reason to keep SFA in one's library is Krystal.

Dinosaur Planet, it was originally an N64 title as well. One stated reason for Nintendo switching it to Star Fox was because the main character bore great semblance to Fox McCloud.

maybe but it just rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't want to collect the tribbles at all, I just enjoyed killing them.
speaking of killing.
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes is tons of fun. It might not be balanced but still is fun
and Soul Calibur 2 still holds up. I played 4 and its not a massive upgrade (heard online is buggy, and I don't care about creating fighters and destroying shields is the only new concept, the fatality system i heard is really hard to do so anyway 2 still holds up nicely)
Resident Evil: Remake is great if you can get over the controls and 0 is neat too.

Soul Calibur 2 was rubbish. It's one of only two games I have ever returned, the other was Guitar Hero.
Buy Jungle Beat or Pikmin 2 instead.

Well today I got I-Ninja, Metroid Prime 2 and Wind Waker. I had Wind waker before but some one stole it. I like I-Ninja alot. Haven't played MP2 yet I still have to beat 1. I probably won't be on much till I beat these games. Castle of Shikigami 3 is going to be a pain.

Title: Re: I've been playing a lot of Gamecube lately

I don't know about fast or slow but I think of Tekken as terribly counterintuitive and clunky. With Soul Calibur there's at least some sense to which button does what since they correspond to movements, not limbs. I don't care whether the character uses his hand or foot, I want a fast attack! Playing Soul Calibur in multiplayer was fun and people got some understanding of the moves quickly, playing Tekken in multiplayer resulted in a complete spasmfest as noone could figure the moves out and once they found 1-2 moves that were somewhat good they just used those over and over.
The big breakthrough of Soul Calibur was that anyone could learn it enough to get some interesting fights going, to some degree it might have been a blue ocean game for 3d fighting games by greatly reducing the need to memorize input sequences and letting the player feel like he's kicking ass without much introduction.

I got bored of SC(2) pretty fast, granted thats because i never had anyone to play it with, but i'l give it credit; it really does have a good control scheme. It allows for a button-masher to pull of some combos and look like they know what they're doing but it also as depth for the more experienced players.
Pulling off cool moves simply by pressing 2 attack buttons at once is awesome lol.
I completely forgot how Tekken controlled so thanks for reminding me KDR. I guess that with the slow speed on top of it turned me off to the series. I remember hating one of the characters because it felt like forever for his foot to get off the ground and kick the other guy in the face! so frustrating.

i could never get into Tekken. Something about it just didn't click with me. Few fighters do.
I surprised my friend by actually being good in Soul Calibur 4 and never playing. I told him "you do remember that I owned SC2 on cube."
he was damn surprised when I was countering his moves and blocking his attacks..
Anyway I got to go back and play that game. Something so fun about owning somebody with Links net or the cool fairy sword from majoras mask.

Gamecube is still one of my favorite consoles ever. I'm pretty sure I beat all of the 20 some-odd games I own, and a few I don't, many of them 100% (I can be a bit of a completionist). I'm terribly far behind on games for the Wii right now (and will continue to be, since I'm lending my Wii to someone; shall be catching up on DS though), having gone on a year long film binge, but I've enjoyed its offerings as well. Probably not as much yet, but I've got a lot to catch up on and a lot more still yet to come.
I do miss Gamecube though. I fear it'll remain my favorite console, if only because it's the one I played in high school, while all my best friends were still around and we had plenty of time to dedicate to just hanging out and having fun. We don't seem to find time for games anymore, those of us who still see each other regularly. :(

the N64 was that to me and my friends, but we were in middle school. High school was too hectic for us to hand out and really enjoy Nintendo as a group, i started looking for more single player experiences with GC.

I never knew anyone besides myself who had a gamecube, so naturally most of my experience with it was with single-player games. It was a shame, though, because the GC was probably the best multiplayer console of the 3. The xbox was too massive to haul around, and the PS2 didn't have a convenient lunch-box style handle or 4 player controller slots, so really the GC was the best designed for that role. Unfortunately, it was apparently the least popular, and seems like no one wanted to be caught dead owning one, so it never fully realized its potential...

Here's how the Gamecube's multiplayer breaks down for me.
N64: Perfect Dark, WWF No Mercy
GC: Uh...
Sure there was still Mario Kart and F-Zero and SSB but for my friends and I the N64's multiplayer was all about shooting and wrestling. Both of those were lost on the Cube. Goldeneye and WCW vs. nWo: World Tour were N64 killer apps and Nintendo obviously failed to realize this as they made no effort to replace them. Though to be fair the Aki wrestling series just died.

You mean a PURPLE lunchbox. Seriously, what was Nintendo thinking when they choose the default color of their console to be purple?!!!!?? A console must always be either white, black, or possibly grey. You can't use a fruity color from the rainbow and expect the market to embrace it or think of it as cool...
I know this is kinda stupid, but I seriously think the color of the console may have been a contributing factor to its unpopularity. I mean, how many people out there love the color purple? I just don't see purple as a color that is popular with the heterosexual male population. The good thing about white, black, or grey is they are gender neutral and pretty much no one will have a problem with these three. You go with purple or yellow or pink, and then you start running into problems.
So having the Gamecube look like a purple children's lunchbox kinda gimped the system's popularity even before it launched. Meanwhile, the PS2 and Xbox were smooth and slick looking with their black colorings. Players could have these systems out in the open while company was over without feeling ashamed about it.

Better but not much. I don't know what was the right color, but even platinum doesn't make the system look real good. all the last gen systems weren't good looking. Maybe it was a problem of shape. For me all I ever did was look at the GC, I never looked at it and said man thats good lookin'. Maybe that's lame though, certainly a super low priority.

Meh, people didn't care about the system itself when I brought it to parties, the problem was usually that they hated most of the games. They'd play SC2 but Smash Bros, Mario Kart, etc was too much for them.

I own a platinum GC, and while it isn't as lame as the default purple GC was, it still kinda sucks. I think Nintendo realized purple wasn't the best color, and then they came out with the Platinum as the new default color, but by then it was too late and the damage was done. My only beef with the platinum GC is that it gives it a flimsy fake metallic look to it. You are instantly aware that it is a cheap plastic shell (which it is, as all consoles are), but the transparent attempt to make it seem metallic just makes it look even cheaper, imho.
It is still better than purple, but I think insanolord might have been onto something with his Orange color suggestion... Orange is a pretty bold and wild color, and I could have gotten behind that. But I'm not sure if everyone could. Like I said, white and black are the most logical choices because fewer people are likely to be offended by them. If you look back through the history of consoles, you'd see the vast majority were either white, black, or some variation of the two:
16bit era = Black Genesis versus greyish Super Nintendo
32bit era = Black Saturn and Black N64 versus Greyish Playstation
128bit era = White Dreamcast versus Black PS2, Black Xbox, and Purple GC
And now we have the White Wii up against the black PS3 and the Whiteish 360. So you see, throughout this history the GC stands out as being the only system to be colorful by default. It is worth noting that the GC was also Nintendo's least popular console. Is that a coincidence?
But Nintendo really seems to have learned their lesson, and the Wii is probably the most aesthetically pleasing console out right now. So maybe one could present the argument that the most attractive console wins, and the least attractive looking console always loses...

i'd just like to point out that the Famicom was a crimson red (almost burghandy.. if i spelled it right) and some sort of goldish color.
also the SNES had purple buttons on the console and the controller for the US release, and the japanese version had purple, yellow, blue, purple and i believe the fourth color was red (but i'm probably wrong) on the controller as the XYBA buttons.

I didn't have it but my friend did and we did play it a lot. It's a great game. Still the N64 was THE FPS console for it's time and the Cube's only notable FPS was a multiplatform game available on all three consoles. They gave up the "FPS console" title to MS.
Regarding the Cube's look the problem was Nintendo playing into the negative stereotype. Nintendo gets accused of being kid-e. It's not a completely accurate image. It's a damaging one. So what does Nintendo do? CONFIRM that they're kid-e in the eyes of detractors by making their console a little cute Cube with a handle that looks like a toy and have big colourful buttons on the controller.
Nintendo didn't create the best image for themselves with the N64 but everything was potentially salvagable. However they blew it by adhering to their own negative image.
Kid-e - Release a purple lunchbox and turn Zelda from cool to cartoon Behind with the times - crap all over online Lousy third party support - have only ONE third party game at the Cube's first E3 (Rogue Leader) Large gaps between good games - have a huge drought of almost literally no games right after launch
They had to prove the N64 was only a fluke and that Nintendo being on the ball was the norm. The Cube pretty much just continued the same problems the N64 had and everyone went "meh". It was worse with the Cube because there was no big excuse like the cartridges. On the N64 the assumption was that Nintendo otherwise knew what they were doing but made one crucial mistake. With the Cube we found out that that was a myth and Nintendo was actually pretty damn incompetent. It seemed like they COULD have done better but either didn't try or didn't care or were too stupid to know what they needed to do. Nintendo assumed people would buy the Cube "just because". They provided no incentive to buy it.
Confirm negative image, fix nothing, be slightly worse then the competition in almost every comparison, add nothing of extra value. That's the Cube.

I don't know I somehow managed to pull together 85 worthwhile games on my POS Gamecube, with a sizable list of titles I still don't have that I wouldn't mind owning. In the meantime I have around that many games when I pool together my PS2 and Xbox games.
Cube got a bad rap IMO.

Hey I still like the Cube but if anyone had any bias against Nintendo from the N64 they had it "confirmed" with the Cube. There was nothing to win them back. It was a decent console if you gave it a chance but you HAD to give it a chance. You had to be open-minded and willing to look past the purple lunchbox with no online and no DVD player. Nintendo needed a console that grabbed you by the throat and forced you to pay attention to it.

Well, yeah, the Cube was a failure because they went for the same goals as the competition and turned out to be not as good in reaching them. So with the Wii they changed the goal and suddently that inability became irrelevant, along with the strengths of MS and Sony.
Title: Re: I've been playing a lot of Gamecube lately

I think most of us would agree that even though the Gamecube was not very aesthetically appealing, at least it was well designed from a functionality standpoint. I never really used the handle feature of it all that much, but for people who do lots of moving and traveling that handle thing isn't really that bad of an idea. Sure, it makes the console look like a Kidde lunch-pal, but regardless of how it looks it still gets the job done.
The much smaller discs and built in 4 player functionality further confirm it to be an excellent console to bring to parties and over to friend's house. Unfortunately, how it looked tended to make said friends repulsed by it and not really want to give it a chance, but if they did give it a chance they might have found out it wasn't all that bad. The GC was an excellent example of why not to judge things by their appearances.
The GC seemed to be relatively durable and well built, and after all these years my original GC still works just as well as the day I bought it way back in 2002. I don't think most PS2 and Xbox owners can say the same about their consoles.

I think most of us would agree that even though the Gamecube was not very aesthetically appealing, at least it was well designed from a functionality standpoint.
It looked alright. It was certainly nicer than that fugly, huge Xbox-thing!

I don't think most PS2 and Xbox owners can say the same about their consoles.
my gf tripped on the controller wire and made my GC fall face first on to the floor about 2 and half feet down.. it landed on the fucking memory card too...
lol game didnt stop, hell the lid didnt even pop open. Memory card and all its contents are intact and now my GC has a bit of a scratch/cut in front of the second memory port (where there was nothing). On the first port, the little flap doesnt close if you take the card out, but if i put pressure on any area around it, it pops back into the closed position.
gotta love nintendo products

The handle also had the side effect of keeping the back of the system away from walls, protecting the connectors on the back.

My brother kicked mine across the entire floor of my basement (as in he kicked the living **** out of it) and it hit a support beam like KABLAOOOW!................don't ask why he did it (man you should of seen him, all shakin' with rage. He was so pissed he took a golf club and held it to the side of my face.....then......then.....). All that broke was the exterior exhaust vent on the left side. The damn thing still works to this day.
Nintendo's the best.

My GC has been through three countries and a region mod. It's also a Japanese Launch Cube to boot. It's a tank.
Personally, I wish my cube didn't have any color at all. A transparent one would be awesome.
Since I haven't gotten myself a wii yet, I am still going through a lot of classic games on the cube. I have a lot more games for it that I ever had for the N64.

I had put a clear replacement case on my Dreamcast. While doing so, I also took the time to change the front LED from orange to blue. It is very spiffy. :)

Quite possibly the funniest thing I've read today. ;D
However, EasyCure is referring to this post (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=24715.msg417980#msg417980) from NWR forum-goer Maverick (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=9527).

I've seen it. Tom Cruise in the good old days before he went nuts.
I heard he's in Tropic Thunder though...
and he's one of the best performances in it.. i actually like him as an actor now!

Hey, he was awesome in Collateral! Laboured a bit, but still..

Collateral was alright, but nothing, NOTHING, he has done or will do will ever give me back the time I wasted watching Vanilla Sky.
I'd rather chug a beaker full of HCl before I watch that movie again. (Penelope Cruz is pretty hot though...)

Whaaa?!?!?!
Vanilla Sky, while little more than an American remake of Open Your Eyes, was a great film. Probably Cruise's best moment outside of Interview with the Vampire. If you have some odd objection to reading subtitles (a lot of Americans seem to) and thus refuse to give Open Your Eyes a chance, I'd definitely recommend Vanilla Sky.

I like subtitles, but there's no way I'd like that movie if it's anything like Vanilla sky. And Cruz was decent at best in Interview. Brad Pitt took the cake.

Vanilla Sky was a mess, Open Your Eyes was fantastic. Anyone who disagrees should stop watching film.
