Title: Soul Bubbles
Post by: Mario on July 31, 2008, 10:06:50 AM
Who has it? This is one of the best games ever made. So beautiful, so soothing, and so creative how it always throws new things at you. This game is stealing my heart and I haven't felt something like this in a long time.

I'm thinking about buying it almost every time I see it but I'm unsure since 40 Euros is pretty steep and it's supposedly not very long.

I still haven't finished it so I can't say, but it's longer than I thought it'd be.

I don't know what this game is. Educate me, interwebs.

You draw bubbles to keep spirits in, and then you push them around to the end of the level avoiding various obstacles and radical bad dudes, all while humming the games great music and fapping over the graphics.

My review will be up in a few days, but for now all you need to know is it's the best DS game. The best! How can you say no to a game that boots up with this screen;
Yeah the developers seem quite passionate about their game and the state of the gaming industry. Glad I helped them out by getting this.
Shutup you jerkface. You didn't answer my question to a satisfactory level. I understand that I'm bubbling witches and going towards the goal, but what's the point? Who's the end boss? Do I have to dodge a monkey throwing barrels or is this some joke boss like ICO?
i didn't finish ICO, but i think its a stupid game, and yes i own it

I haven't finished it, but i'm pretty sure the end boss is going to be Iwata, considering how great the game is. No sign of barrels yet, but i'll keep you posted. It's definitely one of the best barrel-less games i've ever played though.

Yep, there's a really good interview with the developers here (http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/DS/Soul+Bubbles/feature.asp?c=6482), took three years to go from concept to reality. It's even more impressive considering this is their first ever game!

Soul Bubbles is as hard as you want it to be. If you stay on the main track, it's a benign experience that can be very relaxing at times. But if you venture out too far, in search of the hidden calabashes, I guarantee you'll have your fair share of challenge.

What would you say is the game's unique selling point, which should stand it out among the other games on DS?
It's a soothing, benevolent game and it was made with tonnes of passion – which is rare on any platform, unfortunately.
Love this guy. LOVE THIS GAME. It's one of the best experiences I've had on the DS so far.

It's great how they didn't just rush something out and played with the idea for so long until it was just right. The whole interview is great, I hadn't seen that before. If you're curious about the game, read that. Thanks Infernal!

This is interesting. More than their mothers love the DS, or more than they love their mothers?

If you think it looks great there, wait until you see it on your DS screen.
It's a full priced DS game. Obviously, being one of the best games on DS, and possibly the best original game on DS, it's worth that price more than most games. Play-Asia had it cheap but the cheap version is sold out now. I heard it was Toys R Us exclusive in the US, but Play-Asia gets US copies in December. Maybe then all US stores will have it? Hopefully it gets some random holiday sales if that's the case.

Yeah, it's a pity the game is exclusive to a single retail chain in America for the moment, but at least it's not EB/Gamestop where they'd bury it behind all the unsold copies of Generic Brown FPS #124.

I agree with you guys the game is amazing but it only has one flaw really, it's a shame that the game is Toys R us exclusive in America which will essentially kill a lot of awareness for this game(because the lack of availability). However there is a listing on Amazon from Soul Bubbles but it won't be out until December.

Ferny's review is pretty good as well, I think that it's a tragedy that this game is getting a horrible distribution scheme in NA and Australia (can't comment on Europe), this game needs more exposure. But at least it's a indy game in the retail market hopefully Eidos or whatever publisher supports more quality indy games.

IGN very much enjoyed it.

This is the kind of game I wish a demo existed on Nintendo channel. Stupid Nintendo channel ds downloads ha√e become a joke. They don't put new games just switch out old ones from week to week.

1. Please for the love of all that is holy fix your grammar, what the hell is "very much enjoyed it". 2. Me and ferny reviewed it and gave it top marks what other proof do you need?? Mario even recommends people to read both reviews. 3. Quit bitching about Nintendo they don't even have to post DS demos in the first place, if you want to do that I recommend you go to gamefaqs or gamespot and post your nonsense there.

Over here it has normal availability for a niche game, i.e. every store stocks 1-2 copies.

When I was at Toys R us back in late June to purchase the game I saw like 5 in those anti theft plastic boxes.

Both of you are in ban territory with this thread. Do NOT criticize other people's spelling or grammar -- there was no reason to do that except as an ad hominem attack. And do not respond with your own personal insults.
PERSONAL INSULTS OF ANY KIND ARE AGAINST THE FORUM RULES.
I'm going to leave this thread open for now because it's about an interesting game that should be getting more exposure, and I hope people are actually interested in discussing it.
As for my contribution, I'll agree that a demo would be excellent for this game, but it's up to the developer and publisher to make one available.
By the way, I lived in Russia for a summer... and I very much enjoyed it.

Did you play it Jonny? I'm personally hoping that more publishers bring over indy games, the Wii and DS opened up possibilities for genuinely good small publishers such as Aksys, Xseed, NISA, Marvelous to expand on their operations in America which makes more obscure or smaller Japanese games to be reached out in the market.
So far a couple of good indy games came out courtesy of Gamecock and Eidos/secret stash games so I'm really hoping that more of these reaches out to the markets even if they may not have a great production run in the market, it will enable people to purchase and enjoy them.

I would very much like to know how you managed a typo as crazy as that. That's impressive, and I'm not being mean-spirited at all.
The ancient ruins of a closed Toys R Us can be seen just down the street from here, and this situation gives me one more reason to lament its passing.

This game is great. The gameplay is refreshing, the level graphics are perfect and the music is so relaxing and fitting. Still, I am only on the third world but two things keep driving me crazy
1. I don't need a hint for every little thing in the game! Do you need to tell me how to take a crap now! Letting the player figure out things is important in a puzzle game. Telling me how to do everything first takes away some of the enjoyment. If you don't think people can figure out they can carry water in a bubble don't TELL them, put them in a situation where they have to draw a bubble that happens to pick up some water. The player then discovers this cool new thing "on their own." At least I can hit the old mans face when he keep telling me that my bubble is too big, but unfortunately he doesn't shut up. (I want a giant bubble so shut your face!) 2. For a game as beautiful as this with little touches everywhere in the visuals and sound why did they make the player character uglier than sin. The old man looks far better, I don't cringe when I see his face. Generic would be an improvement or they could have simple made the character a glowing wisp or a ghost thing that wears masks. Almost anything would have been better then this balding 10 year old.

Apparently they said in an interview the hints were because some people got stuck or they were worried that "casuals" might get stuck or something.

Proof that the demos on the Nintendo Channel work...
I'd ignored this game based on the name and the cover art. I tried the demo a couple days ago and I played through it no less than three times. It's awesome. I was disappointed to learn that I'd missed it being on sale for $10 last week, but I still picked it up for $20. Loco Roco, only better...love this game!
