It's also from a newly created independent studio, a Wii exclusive, and has a DS prequel. Sooooo pre-ordering this at gameStop.

So what does everybody think of this game?
Title: Re: Mushroom Men:The Spore Wars

I'm curious, but I haven't been in the mood for a platformer.
Title: Re: Mushroom Men:The Spore Wars
Post by: Kairon on July 10, 2008, 06:15:17 PM
I don't think the game is on a lot of people's radars unfortunately.
It's a wonderfully interesting concept, but that also means it's a new IP, and that means there's no pre-existing mindshare to build off of. Sadly, most people dole out their attention based on the mindshare that the name carries, not the possibilities of the concept. It just illustrates the difficulty that game makers have in launching new original and innovative content into the market place.
It also highlights a reason why the Wii is just so great: by not following the expensive HD war, these small and mid-range develoeprs can stay in the game instead of being run into the ground by higher and higher budgets. Market penetration, new audiences, and a mandate for new experiences is what the Wii is trying to provide for these developers, and in return we're seeing games like this: original IPs in traditional genres (this will be an action-platformer) from young, fresh companies.
Wait, this game is a platformer? I just went from not caring at all to being somewhat interested.
In the fact sheet it says Action Adventure, but I think of this game like Chibi-robo your this really small thing and your exploring everywhere so your bound to be exploring every nook and cranny everywhere. High and low.

I feel like this game and Deadly Creatures would be awesome to play in tandem. The game looks awesome, I"ve been following it since it was announced.
The latter half of this year is looking really good...

The environment's audio -- from the way an old fan stutters to the sound of gears winding -- will all be rhythmically in time with the background music. And as you clear puzzles, you'll essentially be adding to the game's soundtrack. For instance, moving the dominos above in the correct sequence turns on the machine in stages, each time adding a layer of sound to the background music.
Les Claypool is the fucking man. He's even making the game better.

For some reason I thought this was going to be a strategy game of some sort. I wonder where I got that idea from. Anyway, I'm more interested now that I know it's a platformer.

Kairon is right if you wanted you could just send your mushroom dude to the bad mushrooms and while their dying you could imagine yourself eating them...or better yet you could eat some in real life while watching their demise.

OK no more bad jokes.I hadn't heard of Les Claypool so I went and listened to Les Claypool and I can see how the game would benefit from the music.

Thanks ShyGuy for the link. Hmm they are implementing the music in such a way that it is going on in the action of the environment. I think Chibi-robo did this with sound effects. I am pretty intrigued by their combat system already with the telekinesis but they plan to make it better...great. The combat programer said that this will be at E3 so we only have to wait till tomorrow for more info. Can't wait

Me too, but my prediction is the core gameplay will lack satisfaction. Thus, placing this game is a "Clayfighter" type status.

I'm a huge platformer fan, so I'm definatley looking forward to this. It's very Rayman-esque, almost with a touch of Rare personality, IMO.
I hope it controls well, as that is pretty much the key aspect of a platformer.
Title: Re: Mushroom Men:The Spore Wars

PAX Bump!
I tried this game at the Gamecock booth. The graphics are a little simple but it has a good style. The platforming felt good, but the combat felt a little simple. Some gross out parts like a rat corpse with health shrooms growing out of it or the fact that your mushroom cap is your health meter and slices of it go away with each hit, exposing your brain.

Yeah, watching the combat in previews thus far is what leads me to believe the game will be like Clayfighter. Great looks, great style, but at its core, a game w/ wonky combat.

Mushroom Man figure? ARGH! I preordered today and didn't get squat! Except for, you know...the preorder.
I fell in love with this game the minute I saw the promotional video in which the fungal protagonist encounters an owl. The owl looms in the distance, relatively colossal and perched on a windowsill, jerking its head horizontally as it considers the odd little mushroom person. People don't make games with this much character very often.

Technically this holiday season Nintendo is giving it to third parties since Nintendo doesn't have a strong presence outside of Wii Music and Animal Crossing because they are busy in development of their next big guns. Some third parties are jumping at this and some aren't.

Game Informer gave Mushroom Men for the Wii a fairly low score. However, they also gave the Wii renditions of Fire Emblem and Harvest Moon similarly low scores, so it might be best to be more skeptical of the GI review than of Mushroom Men.

Played the game for an hour or so and so far it is quite good. Don't expect a super polished platformer (it is pretty linear) but it oozes style. The humor is really quirky and funny, so the pretty average level design is helped quite a bit by the style of this game. It also has some creative boss battles as well (Gushing mole is all I have to say about that!). If you want a good platformer for Wii this is a solid buy, though be warned from what I've heard it is only 6 or so hours long and it is pretty forgiving with deaths (It will start you back at the check point but all enemies stay dead along with traps no longer working).

The music is great, not sure how to describe it though, except with one word WEIRD. The weapon system I haven't gotten to try much of but it seems quite diverse.

Okay: some very quick impressions after only a couple hours of gameplay:
As has been noted before the star of the game is the quirky design. Every object in the game is quite detailed and the friends and enemies you encounter are oozing style and character. I quite enjoy the concept of all your weapons being constructed from found parts - but wish you got to actually build them yourself in a Nuts & Bolts style rather than just being told what you need and when you have all the bits.
In my very brief play I encountered multiple camera problems. Often I'd jump to a platform near a wall and find the camera claustrophobically rotated behind me so all I can see is a little part of wall and none of the surrounding environment. This means that when exploring I spent a LOT of time between each jump rotating the camera around to find my next destination.
Also with all the great design and detail some of the larger environments felt somewhat cluttered, though this could be an intentional design choice. You frequently have multiple paths to reach an objective, and since the game has no problems that I could detect with draw distance or number of objects on the screen I found myself somewhat overwhelmed with potential choices when looking out at some of the large environments. (I'm thinking in particular here of the third level areas with the rabits - huge and just FULL of things to interact with and different areas to try to jump to, glide to and explore.)
I'll try to post more when I have time to complete the whole game - but with the holiday upon me now I don't know how much gaming I'll be able to get in. (Animal Crossing taking up so much of my life and all.)

Somehow it sounds like Death Jr. which I got for a tenner...

So far for me it's like a cross between Chibi Robo and Rocket: Robot on Wheels. Both of which I loved.

A solid review of Mushroom Men 7.5 (http://www.destructoid.com/destructoid-review-mushroom-men-the-spore-wars-118635.phtml#ext)
Quote
Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars threatens to be a classic, an interesting, and frequently clever third-person platformer that oozes character. With a bit more polish and direction, it could have been one of the best Wii games of 2008, especially for gamers looking for classic third-person action gaming in an original universe. Regrettably, monotonous combat and occasionally baffling goals keep it from greatness. Still, what’s here is fun, and a great start to what I hope will be a running series of games in the Mushroom Men universe.
Score: 7.5 -- Good (7s are solid games that definitely have an audience. Might lack replay value, could be too short or there are some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun.)

I personally like the game. Too much waggle combat though and wasn't varied at all.. I like the spore powers concepts, though I felt like I was playing the force unleashed at times. Art style is absolutely amazingly AWESOME.
This, Twilight Prince and Okami at the same time are going to give me carpel tunnel.
here's to a improved sequel, as the concept is too cool to just let the franchise to fade away.

I agree. I was finally able to sink some time into the game yesterday, and I absolutely loved the style and soundtrack. However, the waggle and camera system have got to go! I mean, they're abysmal. On top of this, while the levels themselves are pretty cool, the actual design and platforming leave a bit to be desired. At the end of the day this game reminds me of a Clayfighter type IP. Great idea and design, but the actual execution leave a LOT to be desired.
