Title: New Mega Man 9 Gets Price and DLC
Post by: famicomplicated on July 09, 2008, 07:19:30 PM
The WiiWare title releases in Japan in September.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=16305

It came as a surprise to many when Capcom announced Mega Man 9 as a retro NES-style game for WiiWare.  More surprising news was revealed today through a recent Famitsu article in that the game will have downloadable content. This opens up the possibilities of additional levels and bosses to be added at a later date.  The initial download will cost 1000 Wii points, no details have been announced on pricing of the DLC however.
The game is set to be released in Japan in September this year, there is no date for the US and Europe as yet. Mega Man 9 is expected to be shown at E3 where we should learn more details about the game.

Hmm.
Now, will those 10 hundred points get you a full eight boss + endgame game or is it going to be cut short?

Great, another Wii Ware title poised to nickel and dime everyone! Horse armor, here we come!

As long as that $10 includes 8 bosses and the required Wily-esque levels, I think that's okay.  Remember, we were paying upwards of $60 or more for NES carts back in the day!  If the DLC eventually adds 8 more bosses and eventually costs $8-10 more, I'll be fine with it.

For christ's sake, people.  It's Mega Man 9.

For Christ's sake, it's 8-bit.  They crank out the new games and hock em for 25 bucks!

1000 points = too much for 8-bit: no exceptions.  The DLC is obnoxious, because it repaints the issue as being one of "let's make a cheap game that revisits the series' high" to "HELL YES! FREE MONEY!"

IE: Capcom at it's best vs Capcom at it's worst.

not being a fan of Mega Man of late, I might seriously consider picking this up now.

I haven't been really pleased or excited about any WiiWare titles to date. The space they require and the price to pay haven't equalize into fun for me.
I like 8 bit Mega Man the most and I'm happy it's coming out, but so help me if it isn't a full game the day of release I may shoot a hole through my system. WiiWare is wearin me out!

hm... i thought we were actually all pretty excited over this game. is the pricing and DLC really that much of an issue?

granted i'll be pissed if the initial download isnt a FULL game (ie: 8 bosses, at least 4 Wily levels) but assuming that it is.. $10 doesnt seem all that bad. I actually thought i'd be MORE. I wasn't expecting it to be $5 cheap even if it is an "8-bit" game but at $10 it really does feel like a bargain for what I, as a fan of classic MegaMan, have been waiting forever for.

I really don't see how $10 is too much for you guys for a BRAND NEW GAME.  The old VC games are cheap because you've played them before, not because they are "8-bit".  $10 for a brand new old-school Megaman game is amazing.  I was expecting $25.

Compare this to a DS game's price. They could've made it on DS and charged you $30 for it (example: Contra 4). Not they're making it on WiiWare and charging you $10 for it. What are people so up in arms about?

It's not the game specifically, but the nature of the system. The size of the game as well as the DLC and the unknown qualities of that content send me to speculation about it. I don't want to spend 8 dollars on a new weapon to beat the game. I just hope the whole game is there, I've already accepted the fact that I will have to toss out channels when I buy it and that shouldn't be at all.
I may feel more optimistic about this situation after E3 depending on what Nintendo's solution about storage is.
By the way, Contra 4 has the first two NES Contra games on the cart, that's well worth the price, but what if you're stuck in the game and the solution you get is spending money on a new power to make progress? It's total speculation, but it would burn.
Tanookisuit- combined with the game price and the price of the DLC we could eventually shell out that much, what then?

If the DLC eventually adds 8 more bosses and eventually costs $8-10 more, I'll be fine with it.
If it turns out that the DLC is new outfits or something with menial value to the game, I'm gonna drag this quote out and paste it all over the place.

I really don't see how $20 is too much for Aussie gamers for a BRAND NEW 8-BIT GAME.
Fixed, because the world doesn't revolve around you.

God you guys are a bunch of whiners.  I was fully expecting to pay $20 for this game.  I'm ecstatic it's only $10.

If the DLC is "new outfits of something with menial value to the game" don't buy it.

I also want to point out that it hasn't even been confirmed that Capcom plans to charge for the DLC.  It's entirely possible (although, I admit not likely) that they might give you the ability to play through the game as Proto Man a few months after the release of the game to recharge sales once the initial hype dies down.  Don't immediately start to yelp HORSE ARMOR before you even know the whole story.

Especially since publishers and developers know that gamers hate "Horse Armor". Such ridiculous DLC hasn't reared its for quite a while.

That and because you can download them unlawfully very easily.

It costs as much as two NES games, regular NES games are just ROMs taken from the vault while this was developed recently. Something's gotta pay for the dev costs. Also, unlike NES games, this has a chance at encouraging more development if bought.

Yeah I paid for DEVCOSTS back in the day.

Paid $60 for Mega Man X2 (HD HARDCORE NICHE UPMARKET) on release day.

$10 for EFFING 8-BIT MAN is a fantastic value.

But this isn't a new game like Lost Wind, MM9 reuses the same code and sprites for Mega man that were in MM 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 with a bunch of unused enemy design and sprites left over from back in the 90's. MM9 is just a glorified expansion pack...

I'm guessing it may be recycling sprites as well, but code? That seems somewhat unlikely, unless they are literally making it an NES rom.

Yeah, reusing code is nonsense, the NES games are written in assembly for the NES CPU (forgot the name). That kind of code is not reusable.

Yeesh!  It's all relative, right?  Someone's got a chip oh their shoulder about being an overlooked secondary market.

I think most reasonable people can agree that ten bucks is a good price for a new Mega Man game.

However, I do understand the negative reactions to the DLC announcement.  The problem is that this info is being announced out of context.  You can't expect people to be happy or excited about being asked to spend extra money for unknown products.  The proper way to announce DLC is to wait until you can show specific content and a price to go along with it.  Then people can immediately decide whether they care or not.  It's the "unknown" factor that upsets many gamers.

Correction.  I spent $80 on X2, and $85 on X3 through Chips N Bits mail order store.  Ricockulous Capcom pricing.

Mega Man X3 is really unbalanced but is probably the most technically amazing SNES game ever produced.

Aside from the fact that the stage design was overly linear and basic rubbish and the art design and boss animations and jumping/combat patterns took several steps back.

BUT there was ALL KINDS OF JUNK that wanted to shoot at you, and it was fun running & shooting back.

The game was basically made by part-time interns without help from the earlier designers.

so true. I was never able to find my own copy of X3 and i had heard that it was actually rare becuase it'd be the last SNES game to used the specialized chip it had (whatever it was called). wasn't till years later that i borrowed it from a friend who borrowed it from a friend.. i only had it a day and was only able to play for an hour.

Then years later i got to play it on the X collection and because all the hype wore off.. i was left really unimpressed. Especially playing as Zero, he was too much of a tank.
