I almost posted this earlier, but I wasn't sure if it was still a rumor. I'd personally rather have Chrono 3, but since that won't happen, I'll take anything I can, even though I already have this on SNES. Hopefully, Chrono Cross will get re-released too.

This is awesome news! I haven't played CT in about 6 years. Is it really rumored to come out this year? That'll just be icing on the cake.
Btw, first post. (Hi!)

I wonder if it will be like FFIII and FFIV where it is remade instead of ported.

I just kind of assumed that it would be, but thinking about it that would mean it's coming out years from now or Square Enix has been really good at preventing leaks.

I haven't played Chrono Trigger in years, I hope they just port the original and not release a complicated remake, sometimes 3d isn't the best way to present something and Chrono Trigger had great art that should be retained. *hopes*

I loved the original Chrono Trigger. I beat it over 3 times with the new game + feature, and because of that feature and the fun story, and game play that didn't really resort to grinding too much.
That said, I don't see myself revisiting the game again. Mainly because, I don't want to go through beating the game again without all my levels I earned and items I found. That being said...I never did get to beat the game on the two hardest times to beat the game. (The very beginning with just you and the girl, and that time you had to fight the cult and the final boss.)

It would seem silly to release a 2D port when they have been remaking the 16 bit FFs...
That said, with this timeline, I can't help but think that all this is is a 2D port.
You know what? A straight port would actually be a-ok with me. I've played CT, but never beat it, and since this one has never been re-released for a system I own, I wouldn't mind getting the original with the awesome sprite art.

i might think about buying this since its one of those games i missed out on that everyone raves about. I actually owned it second hand (not even sure where i got it from) but i couldnt get into it for some reason, so i gave it to my friend who was more into RPGs than i was at the time.
i'm sure he still has it but he's hard to get a hold of so i cant even borrow my own damn game. what do you guys think, should i try to get my game back from my friend, should i borrow vudu's and kill his battery ;-) or should i consider the DS release?

It seems FF13's bankruptcy crisis has kicked into high gear.
In order for Square to maintain funding and production on its "next-generation" Alamo, it has to pull out the Holy Grail of ports to feed off the hardcore for one last shot at financing their very own doom.

I suspect the whole theory and have for some time now. Does Square Enix have any real ideas for games? Just because the games are classic doesn't mean they have to be remade and considering FF's insane epicness it gets old and done faster than you can care. At least it's Chrono Trigger and not another FF remake.

I'll buy this. I never actually played the original SNES Chrono Trigger, so this is completely new for me. Plus, the additional touches like the dual screens and extra dungeon sweeten the deal. Hopefully if this sells enough copies it will motivate SE to make a sequel for either the DS or the Wii.
And I really think we're due for Super Mario RPG to either be remade or sequelized. So everyone on this site better get this game, because the better this one sells the more likely Square-Enix will get off their asses and give us other stuff.
Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS = REAL

Well, CT already had a sequel, Crono Cross.
I dunno how I feel about another CT sequel. Unless they bring all the original main team members (aka "The Dream Team") back for another go at the series I would say its best to leave it alone . . . as Crono Cross did not live up to many peoples expectations.
I'm very curious if the extra dungeon will be "singing mountain" as it was never finished for the original title and it had awesome BG music and all ::fantasizes::

It would have been nice if Square-Enix comepletely remade the game in 2D to take advantage of the DS. CT is a 13 year old game and as such does look dated. However, I'd take straight port over 3D remake any day. I wonder if the DS version will have the animated cutscenes from the PS1 port.

Um Vega Zelda isn't a Rpg. It is a action-adventure. Rpg comes in to play when you level up.
Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS = REAL

But you do level up in Zelda when you get a heart container or when you get a master sword, or whatever.

mario is a rpg too, you level up when you get a mushroom or fire flower! you also collect coins (or exp. points) from enemies which helps you level up too!

Lol, that reminds me of a few years ago when Nintendo Power did an article about how sports games were similar to RPGs because of things like that and then they got a ton of angry letters from people who didn't want to hear that.

Yeah it's the wrong move given the characters but it's been like that since the SNES release. It's artwork from Akira Toriyama (one of several) which could have been made during a time when she had fire moves or he just wasn't aware of the move sets.

Played this a little at PAX, and it was enough to know I'll buy it. I mean, it's Chrono Trigger, I'd probably buy it no matter what. The controls were solid with buttons or the stylus, it sounded good, and everything was just the way it should be. I did notice one minor graphical update- the text looked different, and the Square guy there confirmed that it's a new font. I liked it, it looked better on the small DS screen. Speaking of which, the whole thing was maybe the nicest I've seen Chrono Trigger look, small screens tend to be flattering to pixel graphics. The demo ended after I left Truce Canyon, so I didn't get to see too much, but this seems to be everything I want it to be and nothing I don't. I'm pleased.

Instead of following Maxi's link, getting angry that the only "pre-order bonus" visible is $5 off your next Amazon purchase, writing a post berating Maxi's "provide-a-link-with-very-little-explanation-or-description" style of posting. I'll just quote what the real pre-order bonus is, so nobody makes my mistake.
Quote
Pre-order Chrono Trigger and receive the Chrono Trigger Orchestral Extras. The CD, containing "Chrono Trigger Theme" and "Chrono Trigger Medley," will be packed with the game. Offer good while supplies last. Promotion valid only when sold and shipped by Amazon.com.
It doesn't interest m ein the slightest, but those VGM guys would probably lap it up.

I haven't heard much new about this so I looked it up and apparently, the (very short) PS1 cutscenes are in the game which was quietly confirmed at E3. Nice though it really wasn't a deal breaker. I made up my mind to buy this game in hopes that if enough people support the DS port, Square Enix will consider Chrono 3. If nothing else, I'll have paid $40 for a some extras added to a game I already own... which is still worth more than the $40 I was perfectly willing to shell out for Baroque.

I'm waiting for a price drop since I bought a crazy amount of games yesterday:
Best buy: Simpsons game for 360 (9.99), Ninja Town DS (14.99). Amazon: Dead Space PS3 (29.99), Shaun White Snowboarding Road Trip Wii (29.99), Heavenly Sword PS3 (19.99), Too Human 360 (19.99) 2000 Wii Points card (17.99).
Today from Amazon I bought the Simpon's Movie for 5.99 and Personal Trainer: Cooking for 4.99. Right now I'm knee deep in RPGs and backlog so I'm waiting for a sale since I dislike buying DS games at 39.99.
And now I'm hearing Amazon might make new game deals this whole weekend and maybe Cyber Monday I need to save my cash.

I bought the game even though I should have just waited. I could have gotten it for christmas but oh well.
This pretty much sums up my anticipation level too... I coulda/shoulda waited till Christmas, but just couldn't.
I could have sworn that I played this game when I was a kid, but it all seems brand new to me now. So... wow. :D
The way it slightly twists the conventions of the RPG genre are just really satisfying. It's almost like someone who only played one or two early RPGs made this game, branching it off away from the DQs and FFs. Even something so simple as closing the curtains in "my" room in the game was unexpected and thus glee-inducing. It also seems like it can get very theatrical, reminds me in ways of FFVI so far (court room scene, in particular)... the FMVs are fun, too. I was also surprised at how little things I'd done earlier in the game came back to bite/help me later on (again, court room scene who would've known that because I helped this kid find her cat, she'd testify on my behalf later on! or because I ate some old dude's sandwich, he'd come testify against me too D: It made me think, "There are repercussions for what I do in this game... I better be careful!")
I'm just really enjoying it... can't wait to get home and put some more time into it! :D

Unfortunately, they don't matter quite as much as they seem to. Even if you're found innocent the chancellor still locks you up.

Hmm... well, I guess that's fine anyways. They'd have to find another reason for me to eventually fight a frickin' Dragon Tank! anyways, which rocked.
Ooh, something else which I thought was really cool was that the game really runs the gamut when it comes to emotions... I'm not very far, but so far I've seen everything from humor beating the dragon tank, then watching the bridge crumble, and running over the backs of the chancellor and his goons was pretty funny, or just before that where you search the unconscious guard (that Lucca just whupped to spring you from jail), it's like "You've found a med-potion!" "Actually... you've found 5!") to sadness when you're in the future and you go down into the food storage area for the people, and find the woman's husband, wrapped in his cloak and leaning against the wall, dead. The little kid when you get back is just like, "When is Daddy coming back?" :'( in spades. It's really pretty remarkable.
I'm just impressed at the game's breadth and zany unpredictability, I guess. Awesome.

haha, good comic. I actually had to pay $49.99 + tax. I think they're raising the prices back to how they used to be here in Canada. Bastards.

Agree w/ Caliban, good comic bosshogx!
I got mine for $36.99, which isn't as good as $29.99 but better (slightly) than $39.99. I did the Amazon thing w/ no tax and free shipping, and also got a 2-song soundtrack CD as a preorder bonus, all of which helped dull the sting somewhat.

Thanks for the support. I always feel a bit guilty pimping my comic here, so I try not to link directly to the image itself.
Anyways, I haven't picked the game up yet, but plan on doing so in January. Here's hoping someone gets it for me as a Christmas gift. If not, I can probably find it cheaper online or off a friend.

Yeah, I was going to post this earlier. I didn't even notice the soundtrack until last night (I'm not opening the game until Christmas, but took the cd out a bit early). I think it's a great deal, and worth the extra cash as long as you get the extras.
Also enjoyed the comic. It's sad that it's there, but we'll still pay for it.

Now that square is in the a real mood for Re-makes of games I hope they will do it to Front mission 3. No idea why they did the first one seeing the story was actually pretty rubbish and the gameplay unrefined.
Anyone think they will try to re-make Chrono Cross and fix it?

Does anyone else rename all the characters to ones of their Friends and so forth? I do. Although I didn't rename uh, the last person to join my party, because that'd be silly since everyone was already saying his anme anyway. Totally co-incidentally I named Frog Glen

I've never renamed a character in my life. I can't even bare to name the characters who don't come with default names. In Secret of Mana I had to scour the Internet until I finally learned the characters' names from the manga. :)
I'm playing DQ IV right now and I chose to play as a girl because the default name of Sofia is loads better than the hero's name (Solo).

I'm not sure how to reach him.Right now I have these times to visit.1000 A.D Leene Square,65,000,000 B.C.,2300 A.D.,1000 A.D. Medina Village, and 600 A.D. Truce Canyon. The last thing I did was go to 1000 A.D. Medina Village and went to Heckaran's Cave and beat the boss. After that I went to 600 AD and there is some Hero I am sepost to find. I can't find the King. After that I went to 65,000,000 B.C.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS
Post by: vudu on January 05, 2009, 02:22:54 PM
You can fight him at any point in the game. I'd encourage you to try it now just for fun, but don't be surprised when you die in the first couple of turns. You're no where near strong enough to defeat him at this point.
You'll get different endings depending on where you are in the story when you beat the final boss. After you beat the game the first time you get a New Game + file so you can restart the game with your experience in tact. Replay to get all the endings.
In a New Game + you'll actually be able to attempt to take on the final boss as early as the Millennium Fair when it's just you and Marle.

If your group is capable of any they will automatically learn them after one battle with each other. If you don't get any, none are available with the current set of known spells.

Hey Maxi, it's your choice how to play the game, but you should know there are a lot of side-quests available to you right now. Continuing through the Black Omen will lead to the end of the game. (Of course, you can always go through it all again with New Game +)
Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS
Post by: BeautifulShy on January 12, 2009, 03:05:56 PM

Post by: vudu on January 12, 2009, 06:37:23 PM
I find it's most satisfying to complete as many of the side quests as you can the first time around. If you wait do them on a New Game + you'll likely be overpowered and breeze through them without any trouble (or satisfaction).

Well I got all of Magus's spells that he can learn by leveling up and I did the Geno Dome,Ozzie Fort,Fiona and the Sunken Desert and Lost Sanctum quests. I'm having trouble with the Sunstone quest.Any tips?
Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on January 14, 2009, 03:42:26 PM
For the Sunstone: Trade for three Ruby Plates in Prehistory. The Red Vest is even better if you have one from a sealed treasure chest, since it converts fire damage to health. When fighting the boss, keep hitting the small orbs until you find one that transfers the damage to the boss. Slam on that orb until he shuffles them, and then just find it again.
Another side-quest you absolutely should not miss: Talk to Balthasar in the dome near Death Peak and do what he says.

To get the Sunstone, I pretty much lucked out in that boss battle by always finding the damage-transfer orb really quickly. Made the fight pretty easy, actually. That's a good tactic though, to use the fire-absorbing armor.

it's sort of funny. I just went to 1999 and fought lavos or whatever. I think I'm only halfway into the game and I lasted pretty well. I was like this boss is taking forever and than I died and saw that horrible ending.
It's cool to last a long time when your obviously not ready, but the battle was epic. I used up all my potions and waters and two members died and only one remained. He hit her with an epic hit that took all her life plus 5.
I learned the hardway to not fight him yet.

It is one of my Secret Shame games: I have never played it, personally. I have watched it be played, but never experienced it firsthand.
Thoughts? Anything I can do to avoid frustration? Am I gonna have to grind like I did in DQIX?
Nah, this is one of those games where the best of players can actually win every fight with a little bit of luck, even if they avoid all experience points. Actually, I did the same once, winning the wallet in the arena, and keeping it equipped the whole way through. I did use the last character to join you in my party, though, which is slightly unfair, because there's a big level gap between said character and the whole party, but still, it's possible.

Your characters all kind of level up even if they're not in the party, just not as fast, so no one really gts left behind. There's a lot of sidequests towards the end that offer good level up opportunities, if you need it.
But it's like thatguy said, you never really need to grind. Each fight just takes a little strategy. Once you find a working one, it'll work across the board.

There are some character combinations that work better than others, simply because they open up dual and triple tech combos. Those are fairly easy to figure out, though.
I think there were a couple of times that I had to do some grinding, but it certainly wasn't often.
You probably already know this, but there is a point in the game where you'll lose one of your characters. You may have to end up resorting to a FAQ in order to figure out how to to get him/her back.

It is one of my Secret Shame games: I have never played it, personally. I have watched it be played, but never experienced it firsthand.
Thoughts? Anything I can do to avoid frustration? Am I gonna have to grind like I did in DQIX?
Just go with the flow. Chrono Trigger is one of the best-designed RPGs I've ever played, maybe the best. The only time you ever grind is if that's what you want to do (or if you're planning on running through the Black Omen at the end of the game, and the sidequests take care of most of that). Just sit back and enjoy the game, because it is a masterpiece.
If you're looking for advice, though, the Crono-Marle-Lucca trio is probably the best balanced in the game so you can't really go wrong going with that trio when the game allows.

Played a helluva lot of it last night and stopped right after the trial scene, which was surprisingly tense! I kept wondering what the witnesses would see, and I almost want to start a new file and not do ANY of that stuff to see how the trial sequence turns out!

Screw that. Crono-Frog-Robo for the win.

I never cared much for that pairing. Frog's not as good of a healer as Marle, and Robo's not as good of an attacker as Lucca (plus, Lucca and Marle can inflict pretty punishing Dual-Attacks with the Antipode series when you aren't healing). Actually, come to think of it Robo was probably my least-used character overall, behind even that character.

Except Frog and Robo can both do party healing, which Marle can't do alone. Lucca gets some strong magic, though, but she doesn't have the versatility of being able to heal like Robo and Frog do.
Personally, I like Crono, Ayla, and Robo, especially if you use Magic Capsules to up Robo's magic stat to increase his healing ability. Ayla is incredibly strong, can charm, and has a pretty good, but limited shadow magic attack.

True, but iirc (unfortunately, I don't own the DS version anymore to check) Marle is the only character with Revival magic, and Lucca can do some pretty devastating (though, granted, random) damage with her sidequest weapon.

Crono gets revival magic, as well, and revives are very, very cheap. Marle's revive is better, yes, but you're more likely to not die with the other characters in your party.

I like Crono-Frog-Lucca, with Frog Flare. But then, after 20 or so New Game Pluses, you don't actually need healing, and you have thirty megalixirs anyway. I was abusing New Game Plus over and over to try to max out every character's stats, but that eventually got boring.
For the regular game, Crono-Marle-Lucca makes sense for all around utility, but the girls can't dish out much damage without using up all their MP, and you have to save it so Marle can heal because otherwise she's useless, so the fights becomes tedious. That's why Frog and Robo have healing abilities, too: so you can use more interesting characters without giving up a healer.

If you use Haste, the Chrono-Marle-Lucca strategy works great. The extra time you save gives you th opportunity to use items and recover MP.
I liked experimenting with strategies during the sidequests at the end. It made me start to like Robo as a character.

I actually have this game for the DS and have completed all side quests, but I can never beat Lavos any time I try. I would really like to see a 3D remake of this game with a similar graphics style to that of Kid Icarus for the 3DS would be nice. Oh, and a true sequel starring the original cast would be nice as well.

I think you already know another remake is not gonna happen anytime soon, this one is less than two years old and still seems fun.

A Chrono Trigger remake seems far less likely but it's not like there's no precedent for this. Square Enix has re-released Final Fantasy IV 2541768283568 times, namely Final Fantasy IV Advance on GBA in 2005 which I believe was a port of the 2002 Wonderswan Color remake and a complete 3D remake on DS in 2007.

I just found Robot (that's what I named him), and we're investigating an abandoned factory. I'm not really sold on the combat system. It's similar to the Penny Arcade games (I'm sure this where it's from) but it seemed slower in the PA games...gave you more time to breathe.

You can slow things down in the menus, and open up a menu to pause time if you choose the "Wait" battle option.

Did you reforge the Masamune by taking it to Melchior (which will also require a long trip to the prehistoric period if you haven't done that quest yet)?

Yeah, if you take the Masamune back to Melchior, he'll tell you that he can't repair it because he needs a mystical rock that only existed in the prehistoric days. That's your clue to go there. I'm not sure you can do that quest before Melchior tells you about it, though.

Actually, he's in the Present Day, on the island that's home to friendly monsters IIRC. One of your portals at the End of Time should lead there.
Man, Square needs to release CT on the virtual console. I'm starting to forget stuff again, and I'm not buying a DS again.

Finally started playing this again after not being able to find my DS since November. Got the 4th ending just now where you have to Beat Lavos after you return from 600AD for the first time after saving the queen and Marle but before going to the end of time. You only have Chrono and Marle for the fight. The ending is when you return to present time and everyone sounds like a frog. Apparently Frog and Queen Leene got married and well you can imagine the results.
