You can make the CD if you wish, but there are already video game internet radio sites out there, and they're playing the best stuff. Perhaps you could save yourself some time/hassle by just tuning into these sites.
Here are some links to get you started: www.hvsc.c64.org (downloadable music) http://c64.org/radio/ http://www.kohina.com http://remix.overclocked.org/index.php http://www.fanelia.com/rpgradio http://www.modarchive.com http://www.vgmusic.com

If you want to make an ultimate videogame soundtrack you can't go wrong with some Donkey Kong Country tracks. DKC3 has a pretty weak soundtrack but 1 & 2 have tons of killer tracks. There's also some nice songs from Super Metroid as well. Plus you'll want some "one shot" songs from games that have pretty average soundtracks but have at least one amazing song. Corneria from Star Fox (SNES version) and Mute City from F-Zero are good examples of these.

Never, ever, ever, leave out the Castlevania series and Mega Man 2.
Visit http://www.minibosses.com for their rock renditions for Castlevania 1,2,3 and Mega Man 2 (one of the best covers ever). They also have Metroid and Wizards & Warriors.

I agree for Mega Man 2 ... I love the Bubbleman stage musid and the ending music was one of the best ending songs IMHO.
I'd also put the intro song of "The Guardian Legend" that continues into the music for the initial intro stage ...

I HIGHLY recommend Conkers Bad Fur Day for game music, especially the great mighty poo song. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire have some excellent tunes. So does Luigis Mansion, that song at the end credits is AWESOME! I want it! I also like Timesplitters 2's soundtrack, but i know some people hate it. And of course the Zelda/Mario/Metroid games.

i know it may sound funny, but you MUST have the SMB1 song on the first level. It was so good and catchy. Any Zelda music, that is easy to find, Metroid Fushion and prime music is good.

May I suggest...
- Donkey Kong Country - Ice Cave Chant - Donkey Kong Country - Credits - Donkey Kong Country - Blue Vision OC Remix (Much better than the original found on the OST) - Earthworm Jim - For Pete's Sake - Earthworm Jim - New Junk City - Sonic 2 - Chemical Plant Zone - Sonic 2 - Death Egg Zone - Sonic 2 - Bonus Stage - Ristar - Pray! Pray! Play! - Wild 9 - 1st level - Bomerman 5 - Battle Grounds - Bomerman 5 - 5E Factory - Final Fantasy Tactics - Cry of pain - Megaman 8 - Blast Hornet
Um, I could seriously go on for pages. VGM is one of my loves. I buy it flowers and everything! Well, maybe not.
If you've got the means, I highly suggest the FFX-2 OST. From what I hear, it's outstanding. Curse my dial-up -_-

Super Smash Brothers Melee is a great game that has some awesome renditions of good Nintendo music. Star Fox Adventures has a nice song or two, and Metroid Prime has some wonderful tunes.

You want a kickin strack? What you need, my friend, is-
Orchestrated music from FF6, FF4 any other orchestrated FF music you can get your hands on. Second- The battle with Gilgamesh is a must have song from FF third- hmmm the opening theme to chrono cross
that should give you MORE than enough for one cd... you can find the Opera Scene(FF6) orchestrated and that alone is like 23 mins. It's pretty cool.
uhh... Zelda works wonders, if you have any Zelda, get the song of storms if you can, that's the most addicting song IN THE WORLD... er, imo. Fzero! you gotta have some mute city in your soundtrack
uhh... oh! The kirby's dreamland stage from SSB:M
hmmm.... geez, this is hard.... uhh...
storm eagle's stage theme from mega man, that song rocked.
man, that's all I can think of for now...

Song of storms is just about the best video game song of all time. It'd be cool if they have it in the Wind Waker. I dunno, I haven't played it yet (though I do know it's not a song you can learn. Just thought it might be elsewhere in the game).

Well, everyone's gone through the best, really. How about some Jeremy Soule stuff? GREAT composer, very remeniscent of John Williams. He did the music to the Harry Potter games (composed the themes before JW did for the movies), Boulder's Gate and some more. I've done some orchestral remixes of Zelda: Majora's Mask (final hours song), and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. Check 'em out! Go HERE for the MP3s.

EDIT: I might mention that this is a topic I once discussed to death on a board I used to frequent. Be warned however that Nintendo fans are not really welcomed on the board, and it's not a place I would advise staying at for any length of time, but this one thread is quite a useful database if you are looking for the best of the best.

BUMP
Song of Storms is awesome; one of the best videogame music songs I've heard..
F-Zero GX - that story mode chapter where you have to kill the gang by spinning & attacking - that tune is really catchy. I just went back to playing GX and I remembered the song. I don't know why AV made it a song for a stor chapter instead of a course song.
I guess that's why I brought up this thread..

And I love him for it.
Reading through this thread, I see no one has mentioned Kirby. Kirby Superstar has some of the best music put in a video game. I'll hum those themes all the time. Although all Kirby games have good music, that one is still the epitome of the Kirby sounds.
Also, Super Mario RPG. No one mentioned that although, they did mention Mario in general. Still, I thought it should be named.

That tune IceCold is talking about was on the OoT Masterquest disc. That music really stuck out to me in that demo of F-Zero GX.

wow this is a cool thread. I also did this myself, made my own cd using video game music, except I primarily used Sega Genesis and Saturn games because I found that Sega has the best music composer out there for video games.
Anyways I am going to make a Nintendo themed cd also so thanks to whoever bumped this thread as it reminded me I need to do this.

I haven't read through the old posts but I recently discovered a cool game track that is obscure enough that I'm pretty confident that no one has mentioned it. That track is the first level music for Rastan. I'm playing the arcade version here so I don't know if the Sega Master System port has the same music. The game has a barbarian theme like Conan and the music just fits the mood perfectly. It pumps you up and makes you want to plunder foreign lands, steal from ancient towers, smite fiercesome enemies, drink frosty mugs of ale, eat meat raw from the bone, and make love to beautiful wenches! HA HA HA!

Song of Storms is awesome; one of the best videogame music songs I've heard..
It's called the Hymn of Storm on my Zelda MM OST.
And hell, Cho Ren Sha still has one of the most fitting soundtracks a game could have.

A cult classic gaming tune is the Wormsong from either Worms, Worms Armegeddon, or Worms 3D by Bjorne Lynne.
Or don't forget any of the Lemmings tunes if you want something to make you smile and a little bit trancey and cheesy for a bit!

Icecold to stole Perm's habits? :P
The Song of storms is indeed awesome, it has been my ringtone for the longest time, but I changed cellphone recently and I decided to change it for the stone tower theme from Majora's Mask. The music in the game is awesome and Im a blind MM fanboy, but I have to admit that OoT music overall was better. My favorite Zelda theme though is the song of healing, is so melancholic and sad, but nostalgic in some way.
Currrently, I listen daily to metroid orchestrated, metroid metal and metroid remixes, hell even the 8 bit midi tunes are good! and Kraid's theme in zero mission is simply spectacular.
