Title: Weezer - Pork and Beans (new self titled album June 3rd)
Post by: BranDonk Kong on May 20, 2008, 11:17:04 PM
It's great. I need to get this album now...it's not out yet...but I need it. If you don't like Weezer, well, you're just wrong. There is no like/don't like, there's like/worship. It's kind of funny that this will be their 3rd self-titled album, it's red this time.

I had never heard anything by them until I played Guitar Hero III which had My Name is Jonas and I absolutely loved that song. I've been meaning to check out more of their stuff.

Well hop to it, my good man. My Name is Jonas is from their 1st album...1st song on the album actually. Probably (absolutely honest) one of the best debut albums of all time. Go to weezer.com and you can hear the new song, it's pretty great, it's closer to their 1st album than anything they're put out in a while.

you just sold me on it since you seem like a genuine Weezer fan. I loved their 1st album (agree with you on best debut album ever, every track is a hit in my book).
skipped pinkerton (until a few years ago cuz i decided to give it a shot after not liking some of the songs i did hear)
got the green album and thought it was.......... yeah my opinion on this is odd. i'll like it one day and hate it the next.
skipped their 4th album even though i liked some of the songs on it (havent bought or downloaded it yet, am meaning too though)
got really into Make Believe, again loving the majority of the songs
now if you're saying the newest self titled album (RED! AWESOME!) sounds like their 1st, thats a insta-buy on the first day.
go =w=! (nerdcore ftw)

Pinkerton is their best album. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.
Make Believe was horrible.
I'll check out the new one because I always give bands a second chance to redeem themselves after a bad album. Unfortunately, they rarely seem to come back. Green Day is a good example of having a great album (American Idiot) after a lousy one (Warning). While I'm on the subject, I really hope the new Deftones album isn't as shitty as Saturday Night Wrist.

Weezer haven't been relevant since the late 90's, they've been on a downward spiral since their debut. I don't have high hopes for this.

McFuckNuts tried to get me into them in high school. He of course pointed me to their first album, I listened to it for a few minutes and couldn't stand it, so I bought U2's "War" instead.

ugh i can't stand U2. I know weezer isn't the GREATEST band in the world but i enjoy their work. Someone else above me (too lazy to check) said it best, its either you LOVE them or you just don't get it. there is no middle ground. Part of that crazy weezer love fest comes from how awesome their first album is, so if you don't find a spark of magic from that, chances are you won't like them ever. As for them being relevant... were they ever? They were just a indie band that got huge and for most people were a one hit wonder with Buddy Holly, they were never touted as changing the face of music forever or anything.

I'm not really a huge U2 fan either. I like the hits, and bought their Greatest Hits 1980-1990 album, but to me they're definitely a "Greatest Hits Band". I bought War 'cause I like the song "Two Hearts Beat As One", though.

I really like U2, they have a lot of good songs. Weezer on the other hand, my sister was into them and I made it a point to avoid bands she liked cuz her favorties were System of a Down, Green Day and something chemical romance or something. They only bands we agreed on were Oingo Boingo and Garbage. Everything else we were opposites.
But if I ever recover from that horrible System of a down crap, maybe I will give Weezer a chance.

Well in all fairness, Steal This Album was pretty weak. Mezmerize and Hypnotize were better, but the lyrics were laughably bad on most of the tracks (mainly the ones written by Daron).
However, Toxicity remains the second best metal album of the 90s.

SOAD is like Drop-D easy 1 finger half-power chorded bullshit for two to three minutes and no effort to the point of several music theory mistakes. They are prime example of making tons of money for no effort. The original money scam. But it worked great for them! I like Toxicity.

Well I downloaded Weezer's first album, and I must say I'm not a fan. A couple of the songs were decent, but nothing I'd probably listen to much more, if at all. Oh well, there's 7 bucks I'm never going to get back.

Honestly if you don't know whether you like a kind of music either get Rhapsody(legal renting of music for $10 bucks a month, $15 for use with MP3 player) or get it by other methods. Paying for cd is stupid.

There's no all-you-can-eat music service that works with a Mac, and I don't like the concept anyway. I probably should have gotten it via torrents and then paid for it if I liked it, but I didn't feeling like going through the trouble of that so I just went on iTunes and grabbed it quick. 7 bucks isn't that much, so I don't care that much, this is just something to remember for the future.

Nothing new then. Honestly I have odd tastes in music, but a lot of it is my recovering from the gangsta rap of the 90's. I was so heavily steeped in that garbage that it took a lot to get me out of it, and now it is like I am discovering what I like for the first time. It also goes back to my views addressed in the bad news for the funhouse thread. But I will leave that there.
To put it simply, I am more into light hearted and electronic sounding music, I don't really care too much for the serious stuff and some of the more heavy music just doesn't do it for me. As far as "metal" or "hard rock" goes, I am old school all the way, it's all Alice Cooper, KISS, and Def Leppard for me. everything else is so-so.

System of a Down is pure crap. I used to like them, but then I actually listened to them, and threw away all their CDs and deleted all their music from my computer and iPod. Also, insanolord, you should get Pinkerton too, even though it's nothing like any of their other albums (they're actually ashamed of that album, from what I've read in interviews). Make Believe isn't all that great, but they're are a couple fantastic songs on that album (Perfect Situation and Such a Pity come to mind), Maladroit was better if you ask me.

SOAD suck because they make bad music. The drummer is decent, but Daron plays (played) every instrument now (and hes not that talented to take such a position) and completely ruined the band. They should have changed the name to System of a Daron. They're just not good. Tune the 6th string down to D and play a few power chords, another song in the bank.

Drop D is weak, most of the time. It totally limits the low-end chords. If you want to hit that open D, just tune the whole guitar down and learn how to play it.

Let's get this topic back on track.
Pork and Beans music video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muP9eH2p2PI)
It's not a bad video, but not up to par with some of their greats. Song's catchy. Better than Beverly Hills, but that's not saying much.
PINKERTON IS STILL THEIR BEST WORK.

ugh please dont mention beverly hills. that song should of never made it on the album and is in no way representative of how the album sounds. that and 'we are all on drugs'
edit: i really like this video. Its one of those songs that feels like it was written and meant to be a single but not to boost sales, just to get a message across using a mainstream beat to do so. Its reaks of abusing the industry, i love it.

Actually that was the last song made for the album, and they made it because Geffen Records told them there wasn't enough "commercial material" on the album. It's kind of like a "**** you" aimed at Geffen.

I could not agree more. They were AWESOME all the way up until the release of Mezmerize/Hypnotize. Those CDs have a couple songs worth listening to and that's it. Daron is a douche and he pisses me off. Serj released his own solo stuff and it is more reminiscent of older SOAD. That stuff is great too.
As far as the politics go, who cares? Does anybody seriously listen to anything they have to say? I just love Serj's vocal style and their abnormal timings and beat structures. I'd say that saying they're terrible is pretty incorrect as it simply comes down to preference. I don't particularly like Weezer, but that doesn't make them terrible, it just means I don't like them.

I'm going to go a little off topic and talk a bit about Weezer in this System of a Down thread. I took vudu's advice and downloaded Pinkerton, and I enjoyed it, and unlike the first one I'm sure that I'll listen to it again. In the future I shall defer to vudu's judgment. If I stick to that I will almost certainly regret it.

Oh Christ. The new Offspring sounds like the old Offsrping - which means it sounds exactly like every other fucking song they've ever made. The new song is crap. I'm sorry...no, I'm not, it's fucking crap. I did like Amazed from Ixnay on the Hombre, however, and Gone Away of course, but then again, (as seen earlier in the thread) I used to like SoaD too.

Are the bonus tracks on the Euro release same as on the Deluxe Edition (http://www.amazon.com/Weezer-Red-Album-Deluxe/dp/B00188HR3G/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1212689220&sr=8-2)? If so, are they any good?
I really like the first four tracks on the album, but the rest of the album is god-awful. (Granted, on the leaked version I have, I'm missing tracks 9 & 10, so maybe they're fan-fucking-tastic, but I'm not holding my breath.)
Title: Re: Weezer - Pork and Beans (new self titled album June 3rd)

Actually 9 and 10 are great songs if you ask me. The 4 bonus tracks are also on the Deluxe Edition, yes. Everybody Get Dangerous is pretty forgettable, but I really like Dreamin', and Thought I Knew is growing on me (the bassist, Scott Shriner, sings that song). Automatic (#9) is pretty good, but I really like The Angel and the One (#10), it's basically a love song version of Heart Songs. That leaked 8 track rip has absolutely terrible sound quality, btw.

I still have to check out this weezer album.
i did get the new MSI album. I'm sad to say its not great. The first 3 or so tracks were really bad, very minimal and sounds too much like an "alternative" single on the pop charts. The next few tracks were ok, the lyrics made them good cuz it was mo in line with their style and musically they were good too. I'll be honest, i havent finished the album but i was expecting something that sounded more like their second album, especially after the leaked song i came across a few months ago "bob this track". I'm pretty dissapointed.

But anyway, with the exception of some weak songs (Angel and the One, every deluxe edition song that isn't Miss Sweeney), this album is pretty solid. Pork and Beans, at least for me, is proving its merit because I've heard it way too many times and I still really like it. Greatest Man, Troublemaker, Everybody Get Dangerous, Thought I Knew and Automatic are good as well. While Rivers is the Weezer vocalist I'm most accustomed to, I really like the change of pace with other members of the band (Thought I Knew and Automatic)

I've got to admit I kind of was just going along with vudu kind of, I actually really like the song. I like Angel and the One though, a lot.

eh...Angel and the One probably has to grown on me a little bit. It might suffer from "long song at the end of an album" syndrome. I'm sure it'll show up in some random playlist I'm listening to in a month and I'll be like "whoa! this song is awesome!" but that moment is not right now, so I'm a little down on it.

Yeah bands always end their albums with slow songs, like Only in Dreams (though that's an absolutely fantastic song) on the Blue Album, and Butterfly on Pinkerton (another classic). BTW, if you don't have the deluxe version of the Blue Album, then chances are you missed quite a few other great songs, namely Jamie and Mykel and Carli, although they're both on other discs as well.

Everybody Get Dangerous is **** and anyone who things otherwise is an idiot. It's almost as bad as We Are All On Drugs.

Booooooo. Everyone in the Offspring is like 50 now anyway, they're a bunch of old men, they should have more talent. Seriously, Dexter is 43.

Your gonna be there some day. Jesus ya hater.
The album overall is not my bag a chips. They've decided to go more modern rock-ish, it's very political, and it isn't the Offspring I find amazingly awesome, they've gotten real serious in this album. Even more so than in Splinter. If your wondering what kind of Offsping is my Offspring is any Offspring song that makes me laugh or puts me in a confident good mood. Something I listen to with the windows rolled down. Not this.

So you're not a fan of the Chicken Dance? I mean, I'm not that much of a fan, but if its playing at some public place I'm not going to cover my ears and scream. But then again, I'm still an idiot for liking a goofy Weezer song so I guess it doesn't matter anyway.

got the album. listened to it this morning on the way to work and got up to "Everybody Get Dangerous" I like it so far. Speaking of that song, its not bad. It has a mid 90s feel to it when the early rap/rock stuff was coming out before it became too mainstream.
So far my favorite song is "Heart Songs" that track blew me away. Its a great ballad thats NOT about a girl. Reminds me of "thank you" by the Descendents because of what the songs about, but they have two completely different sounds. Can't decide which one i like more!

Heart Songs, FTW. King is really good too, on the deluxe version. Angel and the One is another great ballad (this one is about a girl...2 in fact), that feels a lot like Only in Dreams towards the end.

P.S. Upon another listen, I like the Angel and the One a lot...very much like Only in Dreams except for, ya know, 14 years later.

the last two post make me really want to skip to the end of the album after i get out of work in an hour... Only in Dreams is one of my favorite songs ever. It's not just a song or a ballad, its a musical experience. the climax of the song is one of the best i've ever heard and if i had to put together a top 10 list, it'd easily be in the top 5 spot.

Well it's not quite as intense, it just has the slow build up, and the way the drums were recorded are basically identical.

i wish i would of read that before i hyped myself for Only In Dreams type awesomeness. I was dissapointed due to hype. It's a good song, Only In Dreams clearly kicks its ass.
Oh and im surprised on ones mentioned this yet. Worst Weezer album art ever? I know its not much since its just the band with a colored background (for the third time) but they all look stupid. They look like they don't want to be in the picture (which i actually find kinda funny) and Rivers and Brian have stupid hats on. Im not used to Rivers with a mustache either.

They took that picture as a joke, and decided to use it anyway. I'd rate the Green Album's cover below this, because Mikey Welsh is a crazy bastard. Seriously, he went insane.

Oh i know all about Mikey. According to Wiki he was a no-show at Rivers wedding, useless trivia that probably isn't related to him being a crazymcfucknut (thanks Maverick!). I'd actually rate Greens cover over this one because they all look normal (save for mikey of course). I just hate the hat and stache so much!
