Title: Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth
Post by: Bill Aurion on April 08, 2008, 11:08:40 PM
But you don't play as Apollo...or Phoenix!
Gyakuten Kenji (DS/Capcom/??)
~ A law adventure game where you act as the prosecutor... ~ Main characters are Miles Edgeworth and Dick Gumshoe... ~ You control Edgeworth, searching for overlooked evidence and inconsistencies at the crime scene... ~ New search and deduction systems are introduced... ~ Appears to be more of a LucasArts-type point-and-click adventure than standard Ace Attorney fare... ~ Shu Takumi, the director of the series, is not involved with development... ~ Story takes place around Trials and Tribulations (Phoenix's era)... ~ More familiar characters besides Edgeworth and Gumshoe will appear in the game... ~ The game is mostly focused on investigation (though it never actually says anything about a lack of trial)... ~ Development progress: 40%

Cool. One step closer to head-to-head multiplayer trials, I hope :p

you can write your own murder confessions or name the defendent in the victims will with a stylus!!
Bus seriously, this is f*cking awesome news. I'll be all over this when it comes out but.... I wonder how this will answer some of those questions we were left with at the end of Apollo's game.

Updated the OP with scans!
And in case of breaking hearts, this IS a spin-off...A LucasArts-esque spin-off! :heart;
Hey look, is that a young Kristoph Gavin hiding in that first scan?

No character deserves their own game more than Edgeworth.

Edgeworth is easily one of the more entertaining characters in the game because he's so uptight.
Definitely be picking this one up.

I've been hearing around on other sites the title is Miles Edgeworth: Perfect Prosecutor, is that right?
i hope its set BEFORE Wright comes along and ruins his record. It'll be more interesting to delve into his past and early days as a young hot shot prossecutor anyway.

It was someone's idea of a joke that is playing off the double vowel Ace Attorney...The name "Gyakuten Kenji" literally means "Turnabout Prosecutor"...

Speaking of which, what is it with the case titles Turnabout Such-and-Such? I've never understood that. What the heck is a turnabout?

The Japanese title for the series is Turnabout Courtroom, and a turnabout is a reversal.

I figured it wasn't a real translationg, it sounded stupid anyway. As for the whole Turnabout thing.. i got tired of it at first, and well to be honest it still annoys me that every case has "turnabout" in the title, i've grown used to it.

EDGEWORTH DIES...and so does Phoenix. Apollo, Gumshoe, Maya, Pearl, Wendy Oldbag, Larry Buttz, Dee Vazquez etc etc etc

It's basically the term they use to mean that not only do you get your client off the hook, but also incriminate someone else for the crime... That's the "reversal" aspect UltimatePartyBear was talking about.
To bad in these games, it's more like incriminate the real killer or you lose ;) I always found that kind of funny, but never thought much of it, b/c well it's a game :)
"Your honor, I've just shown without a reasonable doubt that it couldn't be my client!" "But then who really did it?" "Well, I'm not sure, but it couldn't have been...." "GUILTY!"

Huh, I always thought of "turnabout" as how Phoenix/Apollo are always backed into a corner and are about to lose at every turn when they miraculously reverse the case and squeak out a win. In the fifth case of the first game, that lady who sells lunches supported this - she said something about the turnabout theme being popular..

How cool would a multi-player court room drama game be? You have 2 players go head to head as attorneys, 1 player to play the judge, 1 player to be the defendant, and multiple players to act as witnesses.
Before each case, each lawyer can explore/view a number of areas and start to gather evidence for the case. This would be a timed event, say 5-10 minutes. Not all evidence would be useful, some would be there to throw you off track.
The game would play out with the lawyers, judge, and witness playing in real time. In court each lawyer takes turns asking questions and can Object a limited number of times. The Judge would have the power to approve or deny objections. The witness would have their character profile in front of them including a list of information based on their perspective of the crime.
The witness player could view a movie of what they saw at the time of the murder. The movie would be their memory of the event and could be interpreted in different ways based on what the player thinks happened. The witness wouldn't be privy to all the details until the lawyer shows them evidence. This may sway their thinking, but would heavily depend on the player "staying in character". It could be that the witness is the murderer and trying to stay out of jail.
The lawyers would each have a 2-3 minute time limit to ask questions. After each side asks their questions, the next witness is called. After x number of witnesses have testified, both lawyers get to make a final speech. The entire process is recorded and sent out to 12 randomly selected Jurors. The Jurors would be selected before the trail started and they would have the option to accept or decline the summons. After playing back the entire trial, the Jurors make a plea of innocent or guilty. Majority wins. The lawyers than get their stats updated.
There's obviously a lot involved in getting something like that to work, but it would be a riot if they could make it happen. The cases would have to come in the form of downloadable content. It would probably make for a console/pc title, but a handheld wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.
So what do you think?

Information yanked from GAF:
~ Shu Takumi, the director of the series, is not involved with development...(Probably because he's working on the 5th game of the main series...) ~ Story takes place around Trials and Tribulations (Phoenix's era)... ~ More familiar characters besides Edgeworth and Gumshoe will appear in the game... ~ The game is mostly focused on investigation (though it never actually says anything about a lack of trial)... ~ Development progress: 40%

T&T era, cool. I always thought the investigation aspects of the series were it's weakest point. Trying to figure out where to do next was always frustrating.

Ugh, boo. Figuring stuff out in court is what the game's all about. This might as well be some kind of "spot the difference" game Namco might make.

MEGA-BUMP!!
There's a demo up on the Nintendo Channel! Go get it now!!
It's short (~10 min.) and it's mostly reading (like all Ace Attorney games) but it shows off some of the new mechanics nicely. There's a new ability called Logic where you connect two (or more) pieces of evidence to create a new piece of evidence and another called Contradiction where you use a piece of evidence you've collected to pin-point constrictions while investigating.
From what I can tell, if you like the Phoenix Wright games but feel they started to get a bit stale this new game might shake things up enough to warrant a second look.
EDIT: Yeah, so NWR posted impressions for the demo (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=30527.0). They're much more detailed than mine.

I played the flash version a few months back, and I was pretty impressed with the new Logic mechanic. But I find that the problem with the Ace Attorney games is their lack of replay value.
Still, they are good games.

Okay so I've been playing through this. It's good.. not as awesome as the Phoenix games but still above average. I guess I should stop waiting for an Ace Attorney game to capture the same magic as the first PW did. But there are moments which provide some hope. I just ran across this one and it's awesome.

Finally got around to finishing the game. It's cute, has quite a bit of fanservice, and introduces some interesting new characters that work well as foils to the tenured cast members. Overall a much easier difficulty level than previous entries, I think. Overarching story is more detached than previous games in the series; this is both a good and a bad thing, but it's probably the best choice they could have made.
Still not quite sold on the character of Kay Faraday, but I'll have to accept her existence.

Just finished the game... very well done. Even von Karma is toned down and easier to tolerate even, dare I say, likable. Gumshoe seems a bit more exaggerated than ever and could use a touch of that other detective if you ask me. Anyone remember how Edgeworth suggests switching places - becoming a defense lawyer... it's funny how this game makes you feel more like a defense attorney than the PW ones did. Nice hidden throwbacks here and there too... especially if you remember the dialog from the first game. I ab-SO-lutely enjoyed it ;)

I'm nearing the end of this. Really good, a bit easier than previous games but that's okay. Love the "Logic" stuff. However, when I bought the game, I didn't realize that the courtroom stuff was completely removed.... I kinda miss that setting.
