Title: Hula Hoop Contest! SIGN-UPS END WEDNESDAY! Contest begins FRIDAY!
Post by: that Baby guy on April 03, 2008, 10:22:48 PM
Yes, that's right, we need a make-shift tournament until NWR starts theirs up.  Sign up now, it'll be a double elimination, best-of-three, four stock, item-full, stage-full type of contest, and just for the bragging rights.

I'll post the rules, but sign-up, and on Saturday, I'll organize a bracket however Double Elimination brackets are made.

You'll have 2-3 days for each round, so it'll take some time, obviously, but you'll have to get with your opponent to schedule a time.  If only a few people sign-up, we'll try to make a round-robin style tournament instead.

Edit: Extended the deadline a little bit.

Sign-up list:
thatguy
Caliban
Vudu
EasyCure
Pale
Dasmos
PartyBear
DAamAn
Decoyman
Armak
Ceric

I think that concludes the list for now, let me know if I missed you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_elimination

That's the wikipedia entry for double elimination, so you all can see about how it would work.  Except I don't want to do it that way.  Instead, when other people are signed up, provide a list of who you want to play, and I'll try to match you up with them, provided you don't lose.  The bracket for the first two rounds will be made before the contest starts, but after that, I'll make each round based on who's left.  Since this is all for fun, I'll pretty much just pair up who I want to fight for the fun of it or at your requests.  That means the losers won't drop down to a lower bracket like the example on Wikipedia shows, and it also means that aside from Round 2, you won't know who you're going to play far in advance.

You can choose whatever character you want before each match, or play as the same one each time, of course.

As far as rules-per battle, I'm going to say that items should be set to low frequency with everything on.  All stages should be turned on for your random stage select, and you should choose random as your stage.  However, if two players matched together talk and decide they both prefer things differently, they can alter these settings for those particular fights.  Of course, we're going by the honor system, so hopefully no one lies about anything.

I can't think of anything else to cover, honestly.  If someone thinks of something, let me know, because I think that's it.  Things should be pretty simple, but if you have questions, let me know.

Our prize is cool enough that I'm not ready to try and do a tournament until lag gets under control.

What we should try and do is a practice tournament with just funhouse people and see how it goes.

My new thought is to have only 1 on 1 matches and then have a tournament referee of sorts start the match and just jump off the side right away as the third person.  This is the best way I can think to firstly organize the start of an official match, and secondly keep arguments on who won to a minimum.

I guess we could do three person matches and still make that work...

But Pale, that will cause extra lag!

As far as this is concerned, consider it like mafia:  It's just for fun, just for bragging rights, and just for the funhouse/regulars at NWR.  NWR's competition is an entirely separate entity.  I'm trying to stall to give you all more time!

I agree with thatguy; no third man is needed.  SB and I were duking it out for an hour last night with absolutely no lag at all.  They Shecky comes in and immediately we start to get several laggy times per match which each last 2 - 3 seconds.

However, I fully admit that 1 on 1 matches are not my strong point.  I'd prefer 4-player free-for-alls.  OOH, OR TEAM BATTLES!

Argh.. It's totally lame that lag is making it so we can't consider a third person....

I ask you all this, how would you solve a circumstance where each combatant CLAIMS they won the match?

If we limited all matches to 3 minutes, we could save replays and send them, but that would delay the process....

Alright, we don't have that many people signed up yet, so I've extended the deadline.  If no one else joins, we'll run the competition anyways.  I'd like to note that I'll also be playing, too, for what that's worth.

Eesh.  I've been hesitant because I'm no good at playing with lag (not to mention I haven't found a "main" yet), but I'm joining in.

You'll have at least 48 hours for each round, so it'll take some time, obviously, but you'll have to get with your opponent to schedule a time, of course.

Round one will begin at the start of Friday, midnight, and end at the start of Sunday.  Round 2 will begin at the start of Monday and end at the start of Tuesday.  You must have your results in by 3 PM the following day, and the new matches would be up some time before 9 PM if all goes well, so in reality, you'll have more than 48 hours, but who's really counting.

If you guys play 3min time matches, you can send me the replays and I'll churn out the videos.

I'll play, though the lag may make it suck. With 1-on-1, maybe it'll be better... (though it sure wasn't much better for SB and me the last time I tried).

And Pro, I thought matches could be no longer than 2min for replays? (or are you talking about real-time, in which case a 2min match would easily become 3min+ :D )

Hey! Wait just one minute now!

I say 2 min battles.... Preferably not one on one, 4 players are best, but admittedly harder to organize.

Damage meters off! ;)

A 3min Time Match is the max length for a save-able replay (I've got quite a few from my onrine misadventures).  It simply records 3min (= 3 * 60sec * 59.94frames/sec) worth of tracking data.  Even if your match is a slideshow full of GLORIOUS LAG that lasts 10min+, the slow frames and the game clock are always in-sync.  When the replay is viewed, the dead-time is cut out and everything is displayed at full-speed.

I said End of Question, not Line.

And what i meant to say is are we going to set up our own matches and post results or is someone going to say "ok, you and you - arrange a date where you can brawl eachother, post your score. Winner gets to fight so-and-so"

The latter will happen.  I'll post everyone's match-ups as time goes on.

Also, I'll go ahead and post the sign-up list in the OP, as soon as I make it.

Damn I didn't get this game in time. I saw it at Shop-Ko yesterday and came close to convincing my mom she would like it too, but we were in a hurry so I had to go. I am so tempted to goto Gamestop and trade my GC collection in just for this game.

I blame Rat for spamming the funhouse with so much inanity that my eyes started glazing over when I tried reading through the topic titles. :P
