Title: Sky Crawlers
Post by: ShyGuy on March 22, 2008, 02:16:59 PM
This is a pretty new flying game coming out for the Wii. Based on an upcoming Japanese movie and made by the people behind the Ace Combat series. Interesting control scheme has the wiimote as the throttle and the nunchuk for steering
Some footage (http://www.famitsu.com/fwtv/?61214245).
Eight minutes of Japanese people talking, and twenty-three seconds of screenshot slideshows does not equal "footage."

Urrr they do show some off-screen game footage for at most 5 seconds. That's some footage.

Is you fucking serious bitch? Have you even played Gears of War or Assasin's Creed? Just the reaolution itself is 4 times better. Anybody would agree that Wii graphics are the crappiest in the console market. I could see a real obssetion for graphics in your tone. I know it's hard to accept the fact that your choice of a "next gen" console is idiotic and makes you look stupid. If you want graphics then get a PS3. The best that the wii will ever do is around ps2 level. nothing more than that. In fact most Wii games look even worse than ps2 games these days.
That guy explained the trailer best. Wii sucks, you all should know that.

No, these controls are great. The game Heatseeker that nobody but me bought used very similar controls as one of the options and it worked really well.

Is Heatseeker worth $10? I saw it and almost bought it.
Title: Re: Sky Crawlers
Post by: NWR_insanolord on August 17, 2008, 11:15:20 AM
I would say it's definitely worth $10, but I thought Alien Syndrome, a game NWR gave a 3.5, was worth $50 so I don't know if you should use me as a judge of that.

The last NWR screen lists it as "VERY alternative reality aircraft fill the skies". The plane in the screenshot is actual a Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%ABsh%C5%AB_J7W), a Japanese WWII fighter plane. Two prototypes were built but the war ended before more planes could be built. Although the plane looks pretty strange, I don't really "alternative reality" is a good description since it actually was built and flown.

Oh dear, when the game actually comes out I might have to rely on you for knowing what's real and what isn't. Thanks for the tip! (And take another look at the description ^_^)

I'm not an airplane expert or anything, I just happened to have seen that particular plane somewhere else and recognized it because it is so distinctive-looking.

Why do I feel like this game is going to include stupid anime super powers.
Ugh.....There's this arcade flight sim that moves the chair as your flying and doing insane stunts. That's all I want. I don't need the chair, just give me the game.

So this is getting a NA release thanks to XSeed. They are becoming one of my favorite Publishers.
Xseed worries me, I'm afraid that while I appreciate what they are doing they aren't going to make money and go the way of Eidios's Fresh Games Label which picked up more Japanese centric games as well.

That is an interesting point GP but I think if we support them they will do fine.
Off the top of my head they are bringing Fragile,Sky Crawlers and Muramasa:The Demon Blade. Those are pretty good games from what I can tell.

This was one of the games I was really sad was not coming to the US. This is great news!
Did the anime come out here? I might pester an anime friend about it and if he has it, borrow it to see what it is like.
@GP I think that XSeed will do alright. They seem to have a lower overhead so they require less copies of games to survive. I mean, RGC only needs to sell 100k to be considered successful. I might buy a copy for my friends birthday.

Check your local library, GP. Seriously. It's checked in there. 6 copies in our county. Pretty nice. Only my card is so old and neglected that the system won't let me place orders unless I go visit them. Better hurry before I go get it.

Also, nobody warned me that this would make me really, REALLY yearn for Rogue Squadron. Or, barring that, that WiiWare Pearl Harbor game.

I'm curious why they chose to localize this game. More specifically: did the anime movie have any influence over the decision and effect on localization, or was that not really related to the decision to bring it out here? Also, what did the movie have any effect on the localization process?

I would love to know what XSeed is planning to localize next for Wii after Fragile released even though that is not directly related to this game.
In regards to Sky Crawlers I'd like to know if they altered the game in any other ways than text and vocal translations when they localized it.

And answered very well. Thanks for pointing out the link!
One thing that I found interesting was this quote:
KB: Absolutely not. When we first started evaluating Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces, we just loved the gameplay. Most of us knew nothing about the anime movie and once we just tried the actual controls where you hold the Nunchuk in your right hand like a flight stick, we just knew that was a game that most American gamers could relate to.
Many professional (North American) reviews I've that read pointed to controls as a "weak link" for this game, recommending using the Classic Controller instead. It's interesting to see that contrast in opinions.
Guess there are no real questions from me then. :)

I like this game's simple control options for advanced dogfighting maneuvers.
So "push A to win dogfight" is still in? It's stupid. There's no point of dogfighting at all unless YOU'RE pulling the sweet maneuvers that make you win. It's like playing an FPS with auto-aim.

I actually thought it was a very clever way of overcoming the difficulty of simulating actual real flight maneuvers, for both the developers and the players, while still making the player feel awesome and cinematic and cool.
Just like Star Fox 64 had the lock-on system, this game has those automated tactical maneuvers.
Title: Re: Sky Crawlers
Post by: Dirk Temporo on February 12, 2010, 06:06:59 PM
The lock-on feature was for an incredibly slow moving power shot which would be almost impossible to hit with normally. "Tactical maneuvers" should never be automated. Ever. They cease being tactical or even maneuvers and are instead quicktime events.
