Title: The Brawl ANTI-Nitpick Thread
Post by: Mikintosh on March 13, 2008, 05:32:27 PM
In response to the negativity I've seen on this and other boards about small aspects of this game, how about little details that you especially enjoyed or that made you smile that you didn't know about until you started playing?
Mine is small-time, but I like that they brought in the old Kirby's Dream Land-era sound effect for the Warp Star item; reminded me of the olden days when I played Kirby's Pinball Land all the time...and lost badly, but it was fun dammit!

I like how they finally got the Fire Flower design in it's proper nostalgic place... :heart;

- I like how there is a golden sun song in the game.
- I like how hilarious the banana peel is, especially when chasing after a smash ball.
- I like the fact that Kirby can eat certain items (if he could do that in Melee I wasn't aware).

Oh, I also forgot the Mario Golf/Mario Tennis song, which demonstrates how surprisingly great the soundtracks for those games were.

Stage Builder, the levels in general are creative and interesting, the freaking soundtrack is amazing, and the fact that it has online, though fairly useless at the moment.

OK, let me see...

...It has stickers?
Nope, the game is made of phail.
All kidding aside, I definitely like the stages. Nearly all of them are playable, unlike some of Melee's stages which were far too gimmicky and you spent most of the battle surviving them.
I also like that we were given multiple control options. Even if not all of them work at least you can find a control scheme you are comfortable with.

I almost forgot . . .
REPLAY SAVES!
One of the all out BEST new features in Brawl. I've used it many-a-times already and absolutely love it. My first online battle, while laggy, ended hilariously with Kirby (me) winning with a miracle final smash KO-ing 2 players with no time left. Awesome stuff that I was happy to then show my friend who also enjoyed it.
Good stuff good stuff.

I like that it feels so much like Melee. I like that they took steps to make classic clones feel a little different. I like the fact that it uses the SD card in a proper way. It intrigues me to wonder how many custom stages I can fit on a 2 gig card That means send me some stages! I actually enjoyed playing co-op in SSE. While it isn't a perfect single player experience, I was never expecting it to be. Speaking of that, co-op in events and stadium things is just as sweet.
Really, I like almost everything about the game except for two things.
1. The lag in online matches (which I'm holding out hope will get better) 2. The lack of stats, specifically in Online matches.

Multi-Man Melee
Target Smash
Homerun Smash
Practice on Sandbag inbetween online battles
Wider set of Character moves for each Character
Classic Mode
Coin is still in and kicking strong
Vary Difficulty levels in Event mode
Co-op <insert mode except SSE>
The little room that tells me what I need to do to earn things
Allowing Bunny Fast 300% Light mode being able to count as matches

I love the stages. They really feel fun to experience instead of Melee where I felt more like I was 'dealing' with them. Also, I actually like that don't have a 'main' character yet. It's nice being able to pick any character and just play, I never feel like I can't win because of who I'm playing as.

I just enjoyed some 20 or so lag free matches against a friend over the net (about 1+ hr drive away)... some great moments during the matches that had us both laughing after the fact. I really do wish they tracked stats against friends...

Actually theres a theme with eating items in the game. Kirby, Dedede, and Wario can eat items (Wario can eat his bike :O ) Oh and I forgot Munchlax does too. . .
As far as the positives, My Music, AWESOME ARRAY OF STAGES ESPECIALLY ANIMAL CROSSING, and the kick ass online mode is my favs.

Finally (I mean, FINALLY) putting Wario and Pit in the roster.
Not only giving the Ice Climbers a non-fail stage, but giving them one of the best stages in the game.
Co-op everything, including SSE. It was the only thing I liked about the adventure mode.
The music. The graphics. Best on the Wii by far.
The dev team realizing that if Snake makes it into the roster, then Sonic, of all 3rd party characters, absolutely needed to be in there. Sonic was the one 3rd party character that deserved to be in the game (should 3rd party characters make it in, I should say) if only for nostalgia's sake. Mega Man and Belmont are a close 2nd and third respectively.

I've no complaints except for the lag as well. The characters seem pretty balanced, though I'm sure that'll change when online tourneys are filled with space animals...

I like how this game ruined everyone else's "Melee mojo". The speed reductions of the characters make many players experience extreme discomfort when they fail to exert their will in the game.

Someone will figure out how to trip reliably and name it after themselves.
As for "melee mojo", yeah, it's different, but I think any semi decent player will get used to it rather quickly.
I personally don't think it feels THAT different from Melee.

I have a question and the answer will determine if this belongs in this thread or the Nikpick-Thread.
Do online matches count towards the requirement for unlocking certain characters/trophies/etc?

I don't think so (me totally speculating). If it did the servers would have fried a crispy death by now.

No. Not at all. I'm surprised I haven't ran into an online unlockable but I know for a fact it doesn't or I have a few of my thing unlocked now.
Well I'd imagine Sakurai wanted to be fair to the people who don't wireless and allow them find all the trophies without it.

I don't want anything special for playing online, but I'd like online matches to count the same as regular matches. I'm never going to unlock Advance Wars assist trophy because I'm never going to play 300 matches.

Or just do regular matches against the default computer; it was actually fun, got me used to the characters and most of the matches ended after 50 seconds to a minute anyway.

I just discovered this when I played the Event that involves it, the Pikmin go from leaf to bud to flower. That is a great touch.
It isn't just a touch, the pikmin get stronger as well as each pikmin has different strengths and weaknesses. I love Olimar. :)
Yeah, I knew the different pikmin had different strengths, but I didn't realize that they implemented the growth system and the improvements acquired through it. Olimar is my main, I guess I just didn't pay attention to them.

I knew immediately when he was announced that I wanted him to be my main, I'm glad he turned out to be as good as he did, though I can't seem to get the hang of his up+B recovery move.

It actually homes in on edges, it's great. It'll even do it if your above the edge. :) Freaking awesome.
And Ceric I know what you mean, really what makes a character is how they feel when they move and I think that is our difference. I hated Mewtwo in the last game for that reason.

Olimar has a great final smash! It guarantees damage against everybody, and the rocket's a killer finish. I don't even use the character all that much, but I love that attack.
Did anyone else notice that the beam sword finally has a lightsaber noise? I thought they couldn't do that for legal reasons, though I guess they got cleared up.
Also, why do people with HDTVs keep saying they get lost on New Pork City? I have a little 12-inch television equivalent of a Cro-Magnon, and I can keep track of my guy.

All of Olimar's smashes are powerful, from my experience, especially if your Pikmen have grown to flowers.
If not that, his forward and back airs are pretty damn strong.

I like the changes made to Luigi. He want from my favorite character in SSB64, to completely unplayable in Melee, and now he's one of my favorites again. At first I hated his final smash, but once I realized that putting people to sleep or making them dizzy enables me to properly use his Up+B attack, I love it.

One thing I am enjoying about the game is how the characters are more "on model" this time around. DK in particular looks A LOT like the original Rare design. I am also loving the small details like messy pieces of fur here and there. The facial expressions on the characters are great. Very lively!

I finally collected the Kyle Hyde (from Hotel Dusk) trophy. I was expecting to be mildly disappointed, since it is one of those 2-D cutout trophies, but it is, in fact, really awesome.
