Title: RE: USA Today Interview with Reggie
Post by: Pale on August 15, 2006, 09:17:18 AM
Reggie comments on many things, including the Wii60 concept.

The USA Today posted an interesting interview with Nintendo President Reginald Fils-Aime today.  Several topics are discussed including...

Wii60

Q: Microsoft has made the comment that people can buy an Xbox 360 and Wii for about the same price as a PlayStation 3. Would you mind terribly if that happened?

A: I'd much rather have the consumer buy a Wii, some accessories, and a ton of games, vs. buying any of my competitor's products.

Nintendo WFC

Q: How do you extend your online strategy to Wii?

A: It's the same premise. We will offer online-enabled games that the consumers will not have to pay a subscription fee for. They'll be able to enjoy that right out of the box. The Wii console is going to be Wi-Fi enabled, so essentially, you'll be able to plug it in and go. It won't have hidden fees or costs.

...and more.

The entire interview can be read here.

Whenever I read something Reggie said, magical things happen in my pants.

I have a feeling no interviewer can leave a conversation with him with their ass being kicked.

There's an understood "bitch" at the end of every sentence Reggie says.

"I'd much rather have the consumer buy a Wii, some accessories, and a ton of games, vs. buying any of my competitor's products, bitch."

I like that. Especially when he said they were his competitor's, not just Nintendo's. This times it's personal.

Reggie really does fill the gap that most of Nintendo's public speakers leave (e.g., Iwata, Kaplan, Miyamoto). While most of them represent Nintendo with humility by separating themselves from the competition and calling competitor's actions "flattering", Reggie just steps in and states Nintendo's true intentions/desires as a company. It is safe to assume that he was the first Nintendo representative to say something like "kicking ass" to the public and I think in-your-face statements like that grab the attention of people who think Nintendo is just this Japanese company making games that cater to little kids.

That's the spirit, Reggie!  None of this namby-pamby "second console" crap.

He is NoA's president after all, as long as it concerns NA those products are indeed his.

Q: Your background is in marketing. Without divulging competitive secrets, can you characterize your marketing plan?

A: It's going to be massive amounts of hands-on activity, as well as showcasing exactly how Wii games are different. We're going to create advocacy. We're going to make it so that everyone who tries the Wii experience talks to their friends and neighbors. It's going to be a really provocative sight to be seeing teens and 20-year-olds and 40-year-olds and 50-year-olds talking about how different this experience is.

But no public show in Leipzig.

yeah Reggie is definitely different then the other Nintendo spokespeople.  Though I'm going to have to write him personally know since he's president to complain about the terrible incentives to being a fan here in the States.

I am interested in his ideas and wish to subscribe to his newsletter.

If only he had one. He should have an NP column or something. He's fun. I even read his words to his voice in my head.

I wonder if he will still give a big portion of Nintendo's speeches in America now that he is the president? It would be terrible to lose such a dynamic and interesting speaker.

Every time Reggie talks, it's like he gives MS and Sony a huge mushroom stamp right across the jaw. It's great.

At the next big speech Reggie is going to give, he's going to walk out wearing nothing but a Wiimote.

And since he's Reggie, really they'll have to chain about 67 of them together.

And even then, your face will melt from his magnificence.

I think people should buy as many consoles as they can afford,  so they can be sure play any game that catches their eye.  So, obviously, buying a 360 and a Wii is better than just buying a PS3, but I can really only afford a Wii at this point, anyway.
