Title: Red Steel 2
Post by: ShyGuy on February 14, 2008, 04:00:55 AM
Not officially announced, but confirmed by several sources. Coop Online, blah blah. Pertinent information forthcoming

edit: updated for Neo-Tokyo allusions.

edit: Moderators, Evan, please feel free to modify the text of my post next time my Title needs corrected. Not doing so is confusing and bad for the NWR forums. Please feel free to merge or delete this thread.

Once the old posts return and we have two of these threads you're going to feel really dumb.

Why are they coming back?  It seems much cleaner this way.

They're close to cancelling this, right?

Even though the game was rushed and poorly made, the original still sold extremely well. So it is no surprise Ubisoft would be working on a sequel. They'd be insane not to. Since the CEO has even said in his own words that there will be more focus on quality in future games, I think this will turn out much better than the original one did. The original also had lots of potential, but it had to be rushed out for the Wii launch window.

I actually enjoy Red Steel quite a bit. It didn't live up to the hype, but it's a pretty good game nonetheless. Of course if you compare the controls to Metroid Prime 3 or MOH Heroes 2, then it takes a big hit, but as a launch game, it's not that bad. I'm really looking forward to the sequel...

I am glad this game is getting a second chance.  The idea has much potential, and yet it didn't deliver a second chance will hopefully be able to bring the full package.  We have learned much about what the Wii controller can and can not do.

Red Steel... it has potential as a franchise, but is has almost no foundation in unique gameplay mechanics or critical well-being. Ubisoft has a real challenge ahead of them.

So anyone still hopeful for this? After allowing the first to soak in, they are going to have to do something incredible for me to give this a second glance.

Not hopeful.

Despite it being a Ubi game, there's basically zero media of it floating around, which probably means they're ashamed to show it.

RED STEEL 2 CONFIRMED FOR E3

Awesome? The first one was such a pile of suck I can't imagine even being remotely excited for a sequel to the biggest waste of $50 since Pokemon Snap.

Unbelievably true...

Pokemon Snap was great, don't get me wrong, but I beat it in probably 3 or 4 hours.

Very true... the game was made to be an epic rental experience and nothing more, sadly.

Still, I will take three hours of gaming bliss over however many hours of mediocrity that Red Steel gave me before I lost interest and went back to Wii Sports with the intent of never playing it again.

I'll snap Pikachu's spine. Red Steel 2 is one of two reason's I haven't put Ubisoft on my blacklist.

I received the first one as a present (used) and haven't even tried it yet.  I really should give it a go to see what the excitement is all about.

you'd have to travel back to wii's launch and play it on day one to feel that excitement

Where did this news (if you can call it that) come from?

Red Steel had more than enough promise to make me look forward to a non-rushed sequel.  Most of its problems came from unfamiliarity with the Wii remote and a management decision to shove it out the door for the launch.  And consider this: If Red Steel hadn't made those control mistakes and provided a highly visible lesson for the whole industry, would someone else have made those mistakes later, possibly even Retro?

Red Steel's most overlooked problem was its inexcusable AI.  Why oh why did enemies duck behind explosive containers to find "cover?"  How is it they could stand next to me and still miss?

It was almost hilarious how easy they were to kill.

With the control scheme presented in Red Steel, even I found it rather difficult to aim at two feet away!

Yeah, I think part of the AI's stupidity was to compensate for your pathetically slow turning speed.

I didn't think Red Steel was so bad.  The gameplay just needed some polish.  Also the cutscenes.

I thought the gameplay was great (still do), and the AI I had no issues with, in fact sometimes they'd do extraordinary things. There were some hilarious glitches like dudes flying a mile up in the air from explosions. There are some great inspired levels too and i cant wait to see what they  come up with next. What they need to fix is the crap presentation, the game has no replayability because you can't just go straight into the action from the menu, you have to watch cutscenes all the time. Multiplayer was quite good too.

I'm happy enough that RS2 is confirmed to exist.
