Title: Futurama
Post by: mouse_clicker on March 28, 2003, 04:00:26 PM
Is it just me, or is Futurama like ten times funnier than The Simpsons? I've been watching the show religiously ever since Cartoon Network got ahold of it and I've come to the conclusing that Matt Groening's later creation is his true masterpice, not The Simpsons. Don't get me wrong, I love The Simpsons, I think its one of the funniest cartoons ever- I even plan on buying the seasons on DVD- but I just don't think it can compare to Futurama. I laugh so much harder while watching Futurama, sometimes my rib cage hurts after particularly funny episodes. Anyone else notice this?

unfortunately i cannot agree with you here i will say that the last 2 seasons of the simpsons have been disappointing compaired to their earlier stuff futurama is good, but i dont think as good another good show like that was family guy- they had some good stuff on that show although nothing can beat the simpsons
one of my favorite quotes comes from lionel hutz- "he's had it in for me since i accidentally ran over his dog. But replace the word dog with son and the word accidentally with repeatedly."
or even homer's famous "don't you hate pants?"
i think that if you compair futurama to the simpsons now- definately its better but the simpsons in their prime- no way- too many good quotes and episodes
although one of my personal favorites is with lenny and carl-- carl: so lenny sending some outgoing mail? lenny: you know it carl: yeah i'll probably send some out tomorrow lenny: i hear that

Man, Futurama had great quotes out the wazoo right for them first season, especially from Zoidberg.
To Leela about getting an extra eye transplanted- Zoidberg: "What you should get is an ink sacc implanted! It helps you escape from predators." Farnsworth: "That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard- come here, you!" Zoidberg squirts Fransworth with ink then crab walks away- Zoidberg: "Woop woop woop woop woop woop woop woop!"
Or when Planetary Express was going to ship those little love hearts: About the stuffed, cuddly bears- Man: "We find it's cheaper to genetically engineer them then pick out the cutest and cuddliest and stuff them full of flame retardent love!"
Actually, Amazon.com has a hgue collection of quotes from the first season alone, all great.

\o/ family guy, the simpsons, and futurama all top notch cartoons, i love them all equally (include invader zim into that group too)
one of my all time favorite futurama quotes is where they goto the lost atlantic city (they are under water) zoidburg: my house burnt down noooo hermies: that raises a few questions bender: oh tahts where i left my cigar hermies: that just raises further questions!!
i most likely haven't quoted it properly, but anyway its one of the best moments

I love this quote:
(Fry is talknig to a man in the alley) Fry: Well yeah, I guess I have had trouble breathing under water lately. I'll take the gills. Man: And since you'll have the gills, you won't need your old lungs, will you?" Fry: "I can't see why not."
I haven't seen Family Guy in a long time. I always miss it and my friends never feel like telling me. I'll catch it sometime.
And in my opinion, these are the top 10 cartoons of all time:
1. Loony Tunes 2. Dexter’s Lab 3. Samurai Jack 4. Futurama 5. Johnny Bravo 6. The Simpsons 7. Mission Hill 8. South Park 9. Angry Beavers 10. Aqua Teen Hungerforce

interesting top 10
mine would be:
1) loony toons 2) simpsons 3) dbz 4) dragonball 5) southpark 6) robotech 7) outlaw star 8) family guy 9) space ghost 10) futurama
as you can probably see, i really love anime cartoons- very good action and stories but i also love my comedies oh yeah--mel blanc is the MAN (if you dont know who he is you should be shot)
others that were very close included samuri jack (one of my favorites because of the art style they use which kicks total ass), johnny bravo, definately cowboy bebop, scooby doo (the originals), and (yes i will admit it ...) pokemon (for the first couple seasons)

Of course I know who Mel Blanc is, and I agree that anyone who doesn't SHOULD be shot. One of the most talented voice characterizers that ever lived. I once read that he did the voice for Barney Rubble in the Flinstones (another great cartoon) for every single episode, even when he got in a serious car accident and they had to bring the sound equipment into his hospital room. Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, Robert McKimson, Tex Avery, and Bob Clampett were also probably the best directors cartoons had to offer.
As for anime, I watch it and enjoy most of it, especially Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and the many Gundam series, but they don't rank that high for me.

you know whats kind of funny- a lot of people do not know about mel blanc in fact most of my friends never watched loony toons- which is very hard to believe and yes he did do the characterization for barney on the flintstones (i forgot about that one) and of course i agree with you on the cartoon directors- very excellent ones but dont forget akira toriyama (i think thats how its spelled) who made the awesome dragonball and dbz (in comic version no less)

Bah, it should be a requirement for humanity to watch Loony Tunes- I think everyone's life would be better if they watch them.
I have a lot of respect for Akira Toriyama, too- while I'm not the biggest fan of mangas (their style just kind of irks me, same with most anime), I have to admit that the Dragonball and Dragonball Z story arcs are incredible and it takes a man with vision to pull that all together.

I agree that everyone should see Looney Toons. Chuck Jones is a genius for creating so many funny, yet different, characters at once. And Mel Blanc is really talented for doing all those voices.
As a DBZ fan, I have a lot of respect for Akira Toriyama. Not just for the show itself, but the way he was able to create all those fight scenes. While working on a fanfic series called Digimon Z (don't laugh. I don't trust myself with the DBZ characters, but I do with the Digimon characters) I've learnt one thing about making up lots huge battles: It's HARD!

Oh god, I loved Rocko. Simply a beautiful cartoon, but alas! Nickelodean never shows it anymore, at least not when I'm watching it. Freakzoid! was also an amazing cartoon, but it only comes on at 4 AM on Saturdays.

rocko was good and probably the best nickelodean cartoon they had so many good episodes- i mean who can forget wacky deli? or conglomo? mr bighead? heffer? filburt? spunkey? one of my favorite episodes was when they pulled the spoof on the shining when heffer became the head of security at conglomo- genius episode!

Simpsons Seasons 2-6 is without a doubt the funniest cartoons I've ever seen. However the show has sucked total ass for the last, what, 7 years? Therefore it's kind of hard to describe the quality of the series as a whole since, in my opinion, it's been both one of the best and worst cartoons on TV. They should have quit after Season 7.
Futurama is pretty funny and I'll be getting it on DVD for sure. It's not better than the Simpsons at their prime but it's been a more consistent show. In the end as a whole series Futurama will probably be a better show as it likely won't have become a parody of itself like The Simpsons have.
I also really loved Tiny Toon Adventures and THE TICK~.
Tick: So Mr. Mayor, whenever you want me and Arther to save the city just flash THE TICK SIGNAL at a convienent passing of clouds. Mayor: You know we have your phone number. Tick: Also use phone.
Classics like Looney Toons are really funny but I wouldn't compare them to modern cartoons. It's just a different style of comedy aimed at a different audience. Looney Toons (and other cartoons of the era) was more physical than most modern cartoons and was shown in shorts at the beginning of movies. You can't really compare that to a 30 minute TV show that depends more on witty dialogue.
Title: Futurama
Post by: mouse_clicker on April 01, 2003, 02:11:52 PM
I guess it's a matter of personal opinion, but I still hold by that Futurama is funnier. And the Simpsons doesn't suck now- sure it's nowhere near as funny as it used to be, but it's still 10 times funnier than 90% of other cartoons out there.
Oh man, I loved the Tick so much. I watched that show all the time. I also loved the Critic and Family Guy, both of which Fox cancelled. It seems Fox has a habit of cancelling really great cartoons- first The Critic, then Futurama, and now The Family Guy. At least we know The Simpsons will stay around until at least 2006.
Title: Futurama
Post by: rpglover on April 01, 2003, 03:02:08 PM
yeah i forgot totally about the critic i love john lovitz- he has the best voice for that show- it suits him perfectly i think they show the critic late on comedy central i try to watch it when its on i believe they had a cameo of the critic in an episode of the simpsons once- it was a pretty good episode but yeah i guess it just is preference i still like the simpsons a lot but their recent stuff doesnt touch what their old stuff used to be hopefully they improve but i doubt they will- i think they are running out of ideas
Title: Futurama
Post by: mouse_clicker on April 02, 2003, 02:32:05 AM
Yeah, Comedy Cetnral shows The Critic, but they keep changing it's time. It's usually around midnight. He had a cameo on The Simpsons the episode when Marge held the film festival- he was a movie critic.
"i think they are running out of ideas"
You know, that's exactly what a Simpsons friend of mine told, and I'll say to you what I said to him: they're *not* running out of ideas- that's almost impossible on a comedy show (look at SNL- it's been running for 27 years and still has new ideas)- the problem is they're not thinking of new ones. The writers are struggling because they can't grasp the new ideas that ARE out there. There's no limit on the number of ideas, just on the writers' abilities to think of them.
Title: Futurama
Post by: rpglover on April 02, 2003, 12:49:46 PM
yeah that is a pretty good point they may not be running out of good ideas its just that the new ones cant compete with what they used to have also- they havent been able to use certain characters because the voicer for them is dead (phil hartman) he did lional hutz and troy mclure- two of my favorite characters they had for a while i thought it be cool if we could use them again but unfortunately we dont have phil to voice i still like the simpsons but their new seasons havent been too hot lately but we shall see how the simpsons do from now on- i still watch them but they are just as good as they used to be now i am not sure about futurama- but how many seasons did matt groening make for futurama
Title: Futurama
Post by: mouse_clicker on April 02, 2003, 12:59:42 PM
Yeah, it really sucks that Phil died. He was actually supposed to do the voice of Zap Branigan on Futurama, but died before they started the series. That's why Fry's full name is Phillip J. Fry (his middle initial is J. because reportedly it's Matt Groening's favorite middle initial).
I think Futurama ran for 4 seasons or so. I believe it began in 1999 and was officially cancelled in February.
::EDIT:: A friend of mine raised an interesting point- I don't know if anyone noticed, but Fox showd Futurama on Sunday at 7 pm and it was an episode they hadn't shown before. Is this because Matt made more episodes than Fox has shown (I thought I heard that somewhere) or has Fox actually brought back the series. They still have a site for it and advertise it's timeslot.

oh wow cool!! new futuramas, most good new cartoons tend to get scrapped =\ its a real shame, (family guy = gone, invader zim = gone, futurama = gone (or so i thought))
"have no fears, there will be shows for years" heheh yeah the latest simpsons haven't been that great, but geez, im not going to complain after over a decade of quality entertainment
Title: Futurama
Post by: mouse_clicker on April 03, 2003, 02:28:23 AM
The cancellation I hated most was that of Dexter. It wasn't exactly a cancellation, though- Gendy Tartakovsky just stopped making them, or Cartoon Network stopped asking for them, I guess. What made it even worse s when they brought it back- the new series has a very different art style, different voices for just about everybody (whoever does Dexter is horrible), and most of all it's just not funny. I appreciate the effort by Cartoon Network, but they just made it look like a half assed attempt to capitalize on Dexter's popularity.
Invader Zim was cancelled? I never liked the show that much personally, but I know a LOT of people who did. That's kind of surprising.

yeah the braintrust at nikelodian (sp?) bowed down to the complaints of some parents about its "scary content, not suitale for kids" etc, i loved the show, ive almosed DLed every episode (that was before i had cable) ohwell, im sure another good show will come along, and get canceled

When are parents going to learn the best way to stop their kids from seeing "Scary" content on TV is *to not let their kids watch those shows*. They shouldn't try to change what's on TV when the REAL problem is what they're letting their kids watch.

i think they got rid of rocko's modern life and ahhh...real monsters for the reason that they were not kid oriented alot of their episodes had jokes in it that older kids might get but some youngsters may not personally i stopped watching nickelodian after they cancelled rocko- that was a huge blow now i get most of my cartooning on cartoon network (duh..) and fox

I stopped watching Nickelodean after they cancelled Angry Beavers, a magnificent cartoon. The whole Rugrats thing was getting too big as well (the show wasn't great when it started off, got great as it become semi-popular, then just sucked as soon as everyone started watching it). I watch Cartoon Network almost 24 hours a day- it seems like every other second they've got some show I love, especially on Adult Swim.

Blegh, I hate TV sports, except for some baskteball and hockey every now and then (since they at least have something going on most of the time). My favorite channels are Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, Fox, and The Gameshow Network (). A cartoon that I have really started to watch lately is Ren and Stimpy. Now that I undrestand the humor it is hilarious.
Daria was my kind of humor, tons of irony and not laugh out loud humor, just funny things. It's a pity how all of the really good cartoons slowly get canned, but now I have bursts from strong bad to cheer me up.

no sports.........wow i love espn- i love comedy too but come on- march madness, nba playoffs are comming, mlb season openers (go phillies) well i think there are some good programs on espn- pti, around the horn, sportscenter, all the games and highlights, the sports reporters... i could go on but of course i love comedy central- south park, the daily show (the best news show period), chappel's show but the best sport of them all is definately football

March Madness is exciting, especially since I live in Kansas and KU happens to have a very good men's basketball team. K-State has a very good women's baskteball team, too. But really besides hockey and basketball, I just find watching sports on TV to be really boring. Football to me is just a bunch of guys running into each other for a few seconds, then sitting there for 10 minutes. Baseball, while I lvoe to play it, seems like it's a strike or foul and when the guy actually does get a hit it's usually caught.
I love Daria so much, probably because she represents me and my sister so well. We're both pretty apothetic, sarcastic, cynical people and a LOT of Daria's humor hits home with us.

no football.................i am truely saddened honestly- football is my favorite sport in the world- not only do i love to watch it, i love to play it i play on my high school team- its lots of fun but so demanding of your time that i dont know when i have time for games or tv anymore!! i am constantly running and lifting everyday that its hard to just relax of course i find time on the weekends with my friends and girlfriend, but besides that hardly no time- except at nights but i really love football and i hope to play in college yeah i have kansas going all the way baby! (dick vitall) i bet its real crazy in kansas right now...am i right?? we in PA go crazy for all of our teams- especially the sixers right now, but the phillies also... yeah daria does have some good humor but i just dont like it as much as other shows but daria does remind me of some movies such as best in show and of course spinal tap- great movies if you havent seen them they have good humor in their diologue so you have to listen to get all of the good stuff some of my friends dont have the patience to watch those movies but if you get the chance- i highly recommend them

Well, Kansas is pretty much divided between the two main colleges, Kansas University, or KU, and Kansas State University, or K-State. I personally don't give a rat's ass about the whole rivalry between them, I'm just happy if my state makes it into the Final Four, especially two years in a row. There are people who aren't happy about Kansas going this far, though. I have a friend who was born in Chicago and is a hgue Illinois fan, who of course was eliminated right off the bat, believe (by the same merrit, K-State mens' wasn't even in the tournament) and really wanted Duke to beat KU because he was gonig to be pissed if everybody started wearing KU shirts. Of course, KU beat Duke AND Arizona, so he's not too happy.

yeah i have a pool going for the tournament and i took kansas to the final four unfortunately i had them loosing to kentucky who lost in the elite 8 so basically my brackets fell apart and i lost all the money i had bet (around 5$....) it wasnt a big loss but still five bucks is five bucks right??? well i am hoping kansas wins now since i like the coach (roy williams) and the team they have it seems like they have the best over-all players we shall see how it all turns out though over the weekend

or
fry: it seems everywhere i go, there's amy. when i'm at work...there's amy. when i'm watching tv...there's amy. when i'm at the store...there's amy. when i wake up after sleeping with amy...there's amy.

Holy crap. O_O I just bought volume 1 of Futurama and good god is it incredible. It has the first thirteen episodes (some of the funniest, and not primitive, like The Simpsons in it's early stages) on 3 discs with the script for each episode, deleted scenes when applicable, and storyboard and concept art, not to mention the commentary (which is bnoth hilarious and extremely interesting). I reccomend this thing to anyone who enjoys laughing at TV. I can't wait for the second volume to come out.

Believe it or not, I've missed every episode of Futurama (I've been wanting to watch it for SOOOOOO long!) for like the past three years, and last night, I finally caught it on Cartoon Network (summer rocks) for the first time. I used to watch The Simpsons religiously, and I had no idea Groening created Futurama - I actually knew nothing about it; just what the characters looked like (not even their names) and that it was tremendously funny. But when I saw Groening's name, I knew we had a quality cartoon going for us here. I now plan on watching the Adult Swim run religiously, 'cause the attack of the overly-large brains was just too funny (actually, it wasn't so much so, but apparently a lot more funny, judging by some of these quotes). Anyhow, The Simpsons is still my favorite show of all time, and always will be, but just after one episode, Futurama's up there with it.
1) The Simpsons 2) Futurama 3) Invader Zim 4) The Brak Show 5) Homestar Runner (it counts AFAIC)
Those are the all-time best cartoons of EVER IN THE HISTORY OF EVERNESS. I end this post by saying...er...can't think of a quote, but...uh...Mr. Von Riktor wet his pants till he was twelve! No, that...er...

The Simpsons best seasons are still the best cartoons ever. The dropoff from about '98 to the present has been steady, however.

Ah, but they are running out of realistic ideas/situations to put The Simpsons family in. And when the show gets outlandish plots, like the last 5-6 years, it dampens the effect the show has. Part of the shows appeal was that it was a cartoon take on real family life. Of course they were exaggerated plots early, but never so much as to say,' God this is ridiculous'. Which happens to almost every sitcom after about 5 seasons. SNL is a bad analogy. Theres several skits per episode, and if something doesn't work, they move on to the next. How long is the longest skit? 5 minutes, tops? When your working with small snippetts of comedy, its much easier than a half hour show. They really don't have to worry about tying everything together everyweek either. How long would one of those skits be on TV if they had to make a half hour episode every week? None of them would hold up very long, if at all. They can last years on SNL because you only see 3 minutes at a time.
Quote Holy crap. O_O I just bought volume 1 of Futurama and good god is it incredible. It has the first thirteen episodes (some of the funniest, and not primitive, like The Simpsons in it's early stages)
Thats because Futurama is done digitally, whereas The Simpsons wasn't until a couple of seasons ago.
But yes, Futurama is my second favorite cartoon.

The Simpsons is just having a hard time finding its place now- I remember somebody saying once (it could actually be in this thread) that The Simpsons was best at commenting on 90's pop culture, and now that we're half a decade out the 90's, The Simpsons just isn't that relevant anymore and is trying to find where it belongs. I don't doubt the talent of the people working on the show (after all, nearly everyone who worked on Futurama came from The Simpsons), I just think they can't quite place what their role is yet. Futurama's scope was much less broad- it pokes fun at science fiction, and because of that knew its position and could focus more on making it funny.
And you raise a good point about SNL, but keep in mind that if anything, SNL is MORE pressed for ideas because of the short sketch format, and they have to come up with new ones on the spot every week- not easy by any means. SNL is a show that continually finds its place with new generations, though. You don't have a long running television series that only appeals to a specific generation, it has to appeal to everyone. The Simpsons is in limbo at the moment, and so is SNL- Futurama wasn't.

I agree Futurama wasn't-yet. 4 seasons in it was great. But my personal opinion is 6 seasons is the max for sitcoms. The degradation starts to appear around that time. And while they're still funny(I still like the Simpsons), they're funny in a different way. More slap- sticky humor, because its hard to formulate shows as deep, or relevant, after so many have been done quite successfully.

Good point. But having new talent coming up with new ideas, and not necassarily having to come up with stories for existing characters, (such as the case with writers for The Simpsons) is in many ways a luxury. And the reason SNL continuously finds relevance is because of new , fresh talent, which you cant really do with The Simpsons. New writers , yes. But they have to write in the Simps family framework every week, 22 minutes long. After 300+ episodes, they're kind of in a corner, which is why they should have ended the show in 2000, at the very least.

I completely agree- sitcoms often overstay their welcome and end up being forgetten when they were really quite incredible in their prime. Landmark shows like I Love Lucy and The Dick Van Dyke Show only ran between 5 or 6 seasons and went out on top- The Honeymooners only lasted 1 season! Futurama followed the pattern and ended up going off the air in its prime- I think if it had carried on as long as The Simpsons it would have experienced a similar decline. Futurama will now exist as a legend in the animation world, untainted by dilapidated final years. The Simpsons deserves that recognition, but unfortunately it probably won't get it since it outlasted its relevance.

I completely agree with that- SNL does have the advantage of being able to start fresh with a whole new cast. In fact, the best periods of SNL are always when a new cast is introduced (which is what I think they should do now, fire everybody and start with a clean slate, especially since Jimmy Fallon is leaving). The Simpsons should have left while still in its prime, then it wouldn't have grown senile and useless.

"If elected President, my first order of business will be to CUT OFF YOUR LEGS! ..er, and, er... REPLACE THEM! With legs of PURE GOLD!"
I'm sorry, I got distracted. Yes, Futurama is good.
VERY good. I love the Space Wasp episode. And the end of Jurassic Bark made me cry a bit, too.

I cried like a baby after Jurassic Bark! I lost my own dog a few months before it came out. Ha ha, I suck.
As for the Simpsons, I personally think the show has improved a lot in the past year. It seems less repetitive and ridiculously over the top. Well, sorta.
