I don't really like this one.  I mean, why the hell would Yoda and Darth Vader go to Earth to fight over some damn cursed sword?

Me thinks Namco wants to outdo Nintendo when it comes to surprise character reveals XP .

But I am puzzled as to how Namco got the Star Wars license when Lucasarts has it locked with an iron grip...

"But I am puzzled as to how Namco got the Star Wars license when Lucasarts has it locked with an iron grip"

Since Lucasarts has, you know, "Lucas" in the title I imagine their rights to the Star Wars licence is like Nintendo's rights to Mario.  They either get a cut or George Lucas just says "Star Wars guys are in Soul Calibur" and the discussion ends there.

I think it looks pretty silly but I'm mostly offended by Yoda fighting with a lightsaber.  I don't care if he did it in the sh!tty prequels.  It looked f*cking stupid then and it looks f*cking stupid now.  It's a shame that I can rarely enjoy new Star Wars related stuff anymore because it always has post-1997 crap in there f*cking it up for me.

Yeah, I thought they were full of sh*t back then too.

Its official: The new fad in fighting games is the appearance of unlikely characters.

Think about it...

SC II started the trend with Link, Heihachi and Spawn. Then DoA 4 featured Mistress Chief. Most recently, Brawl unveiled Snake from MGS and now we have Star Wars characters in SC IV.

Next up, Captain Picard, Neo and Phoenix Wright on Street Fighter IV!

Reports are coming in that Vader will be exclusive to the PS3 version and Yoda will make an appearance on the 360 only.

If they ever decide to make a Wii version, my guess that good old Obi-Wan Kenobi or Luke Skywalker would fit the bill. Think about it:

Vader: Black like the PS3
Yoda: Green, a color associated with the Xbox brand
Obi-Wan/Luke: Blue lightsabers, the secondary color for Wii.

Damn I hope its not true that Vader will be PS3 exclusive. =(
I guess this will be the first (and only) multiconsole game I'll be getting for my PS3 if thats the case.

man it really sucks, Yoda blows.

Thank you Golden and Arbok for further proving my point =3 .

And yeah, it seems appropriate that Vader is PS3 exclusive. Thinking about it, someone at Sony LOVES Vader. He is engraved on the Star Wars PSP as well...

Normally I don't care if this happens or not, but this is sure starting to look like "How do we get people to buy the same game over and over?  Add just a few characters from other franchises to each iteration!  Can we get them to buy each build too?  Yeah we'll spread the characters out between them!"

you know, I'm kinda wondering what kind of crappy reason they're going to use, to explain why Darth Vader/Yoda can't beat their oponents with their eyes closed, as it should be... (I mean, grip/win... pull/stab/win works too!)
Title: RE:Soul Calibur Jumps the Shark, and then beats it with a lightsaber
Post by: darknight06 on January 10, 2008, 05:10:40 AM
Won't matter one bit if they don't fix the series biggest issue, at any decent level of play it became incredibly obvious that Soul Calibur was hacked together gameplay, that goes triple for SC3.  And without an arcade release first, I doubt the game is even being considered for somewhat serious play.  Now with the addition of these two, it just became increasingly obvious just who they're trying to get to buy this game.

Seriously, why did they have to go and put these ridiculously unfitting characters into this game? At least Link/Spawn/Heihachi were somewhat fitting when they inserted them into SC2 (well I suppose Spawn is debatable, but Link and Heihachi definitely fit well). I just don't get it.

You know, I stopped carrying about Calibur when the developers admitted that when they designed Soul Calibur 3 they didn't care about balance the gameplay/characters because it was a straight to home console game and people wouldn't feel cheated out of their quarter.

So basically, they didn't care as much about the game because it wasn't in the arcade?  They would just rather design cool moves with little to no balance?  Geez great.

Well, they said they learned their mistake for SC4, but I don't trust them anymore.  Soul Calibur 2 will be the last great game in that series.

Woah woah woah! Spak, any link to that? I believe you, I just want to see it for myself. If thats the case, I am so dissapointed. I read about balance issues in part 3 but never played it that much. Yeah I've heard this too and it would explain why Soul Calibur 3 was so unbalanced and broken.  But everything that has been shown for SC4 makes it look like it'll be even worse.  The Soul Calibur series has pretty much become nothing more then a joke now.  All Namco really cares about is how large they can increase the chest sizes of all the women in an effort to appeal to the horny teenage male audience.  The fact that they've put Yoda and Darth Vader into the game only helps to strengthen that argument since large breast and Star Wars are bond to get young mens attention.  And the sad thing is, the game will probobly sell well because of these facts as well.

Now Soul Calibur 4 could actually end up being good, but the fact that so far Namco has done nothing but focus on style instead of showing us any real substance doesn't give me any faith in this one turning out well either.  The way this series is going, I fully expect a Soul Calibur Extreme Beach Volleyball game to be announced by 2009.

Even if they didn't say it, they expressed it in the game itself.  SC3 was broken beyond belief.  To the point where a lot of SC veterans who played in the tournament scene around here dropped the series like a bad habit over it.  IMO, the whole series didn't have that great of an engine to begin with.  The only reason a lot of people started saying anything now is because beforehand you could sort of work with it, but SC3 really exposed the BS of the series tenfold while somehow adding it's own crap on top of it.  No matter what they say, the core engine itself is not going to be changed all that much because it would set off the fanbase.  Adding Yoda and Darth Vader just confirms to me what they plan on doing with the game.  Fixing the engine and balance overall isn't one of those things.

I read somewhere that Yoda would be downloadable on the 360 and vice versa with Vader on the PS3.  I imagine that each system will have a timed exclusive before being able to purchase the other one through PSN or Live.  Of course, don't quote me on that.

Well, Link did have his own music, and his "home" stages (the cathedral and the tree-filled courtyard) were pretty appropriate aesthetically. Tho Spawn and Heihachi weren't as fortunate, as they were both too modern to fit into the SC setting. So how Darth Vader's gonna work is beyond me...

I was just reading a bit about this game, and stumbled on this bit of information:

Quote from: Wikipedia
Critical Finisher

Soulcalibur IV will feature an all-new Critical Finisher system. This time there will be another gauge under the characters' Health Meter, known as the Soul Gauge. This meter will fill up when attacking and decrease when guarding. When the meter is empty, the opponent can do a strike that breaks off a part from the character's armor, altering their appearance and making them weaker for the remainder of the match. There are also three green boxes below the gauges, reflecting the state of the characters armor: high, mid, or low.

If the character manages to empty out the opponent's Soul Gauge again, they will get a short chance to perform a powerful Critical Finisher, which will kill the opponent instantly. Each character has their own personal Critical Finisher. Namco says that they developed the Soul Gauge to decrease the benefits from constant guarding, thus giving the game a faster tempo. It subsequently would make the matches more offensive, as well.

Pretty interesting, I think it'll have a profound effect on the game. Most fighting games tend to get too defensive so this might make it much more offensive and fast paced.

Apparently they also have stages...What is this crap?  Link didn't get HIS own stage, and a forest-type stage would have, you know, ACTUALLY MADE SENSE!?  Good job ruining the game even further, Namco...

So giving characters stages=ruining the game?

What's wrong with you?

No, what's wrong with YOU?

Soul Calibur has always had a clear-cut Renaissance-time period feel to it, and adding random sci-fi locations is bloody stupid...

I can totally see how this as an arena would totally ruin the game.

Maybe the middle stage, but playing on a 403 error would be stupid in a Soul Calibur game.

It'll work if you copy and paste them, but isn't working if I click on them.

2.0GB save file?!?  Surely that's a typo, right?

Why the heck is the save file so large?  That's utterly ridiculous.

I don't know but it looks like 20GB PS3 owners gotta clean out their fridges :D

I just remembered--SC IV has a create-a-character mode.  That's why the save file is so effing huge and why the hard drive is required for the 360 version.
