While this is only a rumor, I see absolutely no reason to doubt it is true. Remember, 2009 is two years away so MS probably has something in the early stages of development by now. Releasing the 360 a year before the competition has paid off for them big time, so I see no reason why they wouldn't apply that strategy again. They probably also have some motion control idea in development after seeing how successful it was on the Wii.
Expect this 7th generation to be VERY short, folks.

Nintendo starts development on the next console as soon as the last one's out the door. It's SOP I imagine. Though it does concern me that MS is gonna do a SECOND 4 year generation...hmm...

It's a good thing for the industry that the PS3 is going to have a 10 year lifespan, right?
Right?!?

Yes.
With the huge success of the Wii we have seen that people don't care much for a modest upgrade in graphics and huge prices, and the current gen consoles should last longer then the previous generation because of this. Besides the ps2 was cut short if anything, the software was still selling.
I expect Nintendo and possibly Sony barely to react. If the xbox just increases graphics and price the other consoles can keep their higher user base and do well with their cheaper price. When the ps3 price goes down is when it will help bluray into peoples homes the most. If it adds motion I don't see people jumping from the Wii. Either they keep xbox quality graphics and add motion and people still won't care much about the difference in Wii/Xbox graphics or they make an expensive console with motion that will be too expensive to tap into the new market.

I wouldn't even buy another Nintendo console if they released it before 2011.

I think they should think about the next system now, and think of a way to keep it from breaking like the 360 did, but then again, MS will probably be thinking of a way to make the graphics look better and the next system won't even turn on when people buy it because MS forgot to put a power supply into the system and they will have to spend 10 billion to extend warranties.

I'd rather a 360 redesign so I can actually play the games I want to play on 360.

@Topic title: DURRRRRR
You can bet Microsoft started on the next one as soon as the 360 was released. Even if they didn't, it's been out for two years, no sh!t they're working on the next one.

You know, the 360 is indeed an ugly system. Is it just me, or does it look like something that belongs in the kitchen rather than next to your television? Seriously, it looks like it should have a "Lightly Toast" setting under the power button. As is, the Light Toasting isn't even optional.
I have the Pro 360; I'm not elite enough for the Elite. Maybe it looks cooler.

If Microsoft releases a new console anytime soon it will not be just to up graphics and the like. It will probably be to make it fully DirectX10 compatible to make transitioning between PC and XBox even easier. Also it will be to drive the underlying cost down for each manafactured and to raise the overall reliability to save money on the support side.

as much praize and accolades i have been giving Microsoft this generation for 360, it becomes easy to forget they're a vicious monopolizing company with world domination as their aim. If the Xbox line somehow replaced the PC that would spell trouble in the long run for companies like Nintendo.
On the other hand Nintendo has the upper hand of being the most innovative company, as well as being the 2nd biggest Japanese company. It seems like Microsoft can't touch Nintendo in the home territory. After everything unique the Wii does, it A makes you wonder what else they're thinking, B you probably have all already thought of ways to improve what they're doing, and C gives you ideas you never had before.

The worst that would happen is Nintendo would be in the same boat as they were with the Gamecube where they were in last place and almost no 3rd party supported them, but somehow they managed to maintain profitability.
Let's also remember that Apple has also managed to carve itself an impenetrable niche in the computer industry which MS hasn't been able to obliterate. So I don't think Nintendo would be going anywhere if MS had 90% market share with video games. Sony would leave the market, though. Sony couldn't survive with a Gamecube level of marketshare, but Nintendo has proven they can.

To be fair. Microsoft doesn't want to kill Apple. Bill Gates is invested in Apple, and realizes if Apple drops then Microsoft could be considered a monopoly. And they don't want the government going after them again.
Besides Apple takes the risks to innovate and create new products and then Microsoft can exploit it.
