That's awesome. I read about it before, but that's the first time I saw the video. This could lead to tons of awesome, awesome stuff. Hopefully someone develops a media center program with access to SD storage, or even a USB HDD, then I get get rid of my gigantic Xbox...maybe.

Nintendo will patch it with the next update. You just KNOW they will...

Nintendo will crush this as quickly as they can.

"GAMECUBE FREELOADER?! NOT ON MY WATCH!"
"But Nintendo, I just want to play my American GameCube games on my Wii"
"UIAUAUHIHIUAAAHAUHAIJ()*WU)JIMJJAOAJJAJAAOJAJJJAIOJIAA"
"Nooooooo!"

I don't think this is something that they can possibly patch, it's a hardware issue. It can be fixed in newer systems, possibly.

Looks like infernal will have a wall of different versions of the freeloader or doesn't want to use his gamecube anymore that or he sold it.

Man, I couldn't even watch that video.  What a horrible public speaker.  That guy has no place on a stage.

So what's all this about homebrew?

I don't think this was so much any modification to the hardware, as it was breaking down the code to see what code was needed for the drive to read in order for it to provide access to all the hardware that was Wii.

The only reason why nintendo would not like this is if it opened the door for people to pirate games.  It's still not as if you can just burn a disk and have your Wii read it.  You still have to have some bypass that skips over that security read on the disk that only nintendo can burn into every disk they make.

In the end I don't think Nintendo should worry about this, as there will be an increadibly small number of people that will use it.  Correct me if i'm wrong but I think this is about writting fresh code and games for the Wii instead of simply pirating games over onto it.

You don't need this (and probably would not want it) for Wii piracy. There have been Wii modchips since about 3 months after the system came out in the US. This is all about homebrew, plain and simple, it's basically what the whole convention is about, which is why they showed demos of Linux on the 360 taking advantage of the 360's 3D abilities, instead of talking about playing copied games.

I was looking for the old Wii Homebrew thread, but couldn't find it so I'm bumping this one instead.

I decided to finally homebrew an old Wii that the disc drive stopped working on (for the 3rd time), since it was gonna cost about $70 to fix it, it was worth risking bricking it to get the Homebrew and USB loader up so that I can copy over all my old Wii games to an old HDD and give this old system some new life.

So my question is, what are some quality Homebrew Apps and Games?
whats worth checking out? what is necessity? what should I avoid?
Title: Re: Bring on the wii homebrew and hacks!
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on January 07, 2014, 05:17:23 PM
I was following a video tutorial on how to do all that. it was very simple and I wish I had done it 2-3 years ago....

Homebrew Channel: http://youtu.be/m70dCXkn1CE
USB Loader: http://youtu.be/gKPEgwbCFa8

New question though. Since my Disc Drive in the Wii is not working, is there a way to transfer over the games using the disc drive in my computer? or will I just have to download the games from the internets?

Yep. I have a program on my computer I used to rip the game data off. I'm not at home right now so I can't check the name but I found it pretty quickly on Google.

Depends on the drive in your PC. I think it has to be an LG drive (specific model), I always used my Wii's drive to rip straight to a USB HDD.

so hidden option B it may be....

Well, that would probably be quicker and easier anyway, even if more risky.
I'd rather not take the risk, but I'm paying the cost of a new Wii just to fix the one I have and don't play. This mod isn't for my use.

Replacement Wii DVD-ROM (http://www.nintendorepairshop.com/products/2501-Wii-DVD-Replacement-Drive/)
Tri-wing screwdriver (http://www.nintendorepairshop.com/products/104-Triwing-Trigram-Screw-Driver-Nintendo-Repair-Tool/)
$37 + shipping for both, it's a relatively painless job to change the drive. Watch a video on YouTube and it should take 10-15 minutes. There is always the other option though.

I might do that. Would make it easier than a workaround, and I still have to convert an old HDD, if I still have an extra laying around.

If you can replace a laptop LCD, you can do this. A fun hack (admittedly I haven't done it) is once you have all your games on the HDD, mount it inside the Wii. You can get rid of the DVD-ROM, but still need the board from the drive, and you can hard wire the HDD to the USB ports on the motherboard. Again, I haven't done it...but I might, because my DVD-ROM no longer works, but I might just replace it instead since then my kids can watch DVD movies on it too (don't forget to install that mod!).

Any idea if this part is manufactured by Nintendo, or is this a third-party product?
Title: Re: Bring on the wii homebrew and hacks!
Post by: BranDonk Kong on January 12, 2014, 09:27:51 PM
Drive is manufactured by Panasonic (might be LG), I believe, but it's OEM. There's no such thing as a third party Wii optical drive (or for any console*).

*Not including replacement PCBs for 360 drives and drive emulators but those don't count anyway.

Ah, good to know. Any idea if that replacement drive can play GCN discs? The description doesn't say.

I don't need one right now, but I might at some point. My first system had drive issues, so it's good to know my options.

So I finally picked up project USB loader again, got my HDD in a USB case with power supply and everything. Formatted to WFSB, and find out that the USB loader on the Wii doesn't even work....
It just kicks me back to the Wii Menu.

Do i need to erase the USB Channel and try again, or is there possibly some other incompatibility going on?

Maybe...I've deleted everything and started over a couple of times. Could be your drive though.

There is nothing in the drive yet, but the USB Channel should still read the drive as being there correct?

I'll just redo that portion of it tomorrow.

Hopefully we'll see some homebrew that allows online games to be played online, if it's possible.

Well, it should show that there's a drive and still load the USB Loader GX (I assume), just without any games.

Mop it Up I have no idea what you're trying to say.

Oh I see. Probably not going to happen. This kind of stuff typically only works with LAN games, which I imagine on the Wii are few and far between (but on the DS that's another story)...but then again the Wii has been hacked to Hell and back, so it may be possible to emulate the Nintendo WiFI Connection.

I guess I was vague, but yeah, I meant what BlackNMild2k1 said, after the Wi-Fi is turned off on May 20th.

If this pushed people to figure out how to get DS local wireless games running online, that'd be nice too.
Title: Re: Bring on the wii homebrew and hacks!
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on March 01, 2014, 07:10:21 PM
Ok, I'm guessing that I have an incompatible HDD or something, as I reinstalled the USB Loader GX and now it says "Waiting on your slow USB drive" like it's supposed to, but in one slot it just counts down, in the next slot it kinda lags and freezes and then resets after 30+ seconds.

HDD works and has been formatted to WFBS on the computer, not sure what else it could be.
any ideas?

I thought people did... but it required both players to have a specific type of wireless router and such...

It's still probably your HDD. It can only be read from one slot, so the one that makes it freeze and crash is the right one (not being detected at all in the other one). I've only used 2 or 3 different ones with some generic USB adapter.

The last time I checked, I didn't find anything at all. If you know of something, I'd like to see it.
