Title: Nintendo homages in other video games
Post by: JonLeung on December 25, 2007, 09:40:42 AM
What homages/references have you seen of Nintendo characters/themes/etc. in other games?
Today, I was playing Sam & Max (Season 2, Episode 1 - Ice Station Santa) and was delighted to see an arcade sequence based on Punch-Out!! The gameplay mechanics were very much the same, the music was clearly based on the Punch-Out!! theme, and the second opponent is named "Bald Bullrat". (Yeah, I added this to the trivia section of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! on Wikipedia...) I thought that was really neat!

There were those three characters in World of Warcraft that resembled Link, Mario and Luigi, I forget what their names were.

There was also the appearance of Mario, Sonic and Luigi in The Simpsons Game. I haven't played it myself but my nephew played through it and says he saw them. There's also Homer dressed up as Link in one of the pieces of promotional artwork.

There was an entire area in WoW called the Un'Goro Crater which was one gigantic Nintendo reference.
The area itself was a reference to the past level in Earthbound, replete with Devilsaurs which look similar to the ones in the crater in Earthbound. This was also the area which housed Linken, Larion and Muigin. Linken was a gnome dressed like Link and for completing his long chain of quests, you got to pick between two rewards: Linken's boomerang or Linken's Sword of Mastery.
In TF2, one of the Pyro's taunts is that he does a "Hadouken" with a ball of fire. Not a Nintendo reference, but an interesting reference regardless.

OMG! I totally didn't get that the Devilsaurs were an earthbound reference! ... were they?
I thought that Un'Goro Crater was a reference to N'gorogoro crater in Africa?

Ah, thanks for explaining it better. I remembered the reference because you showed it to me but I forgot the names.

I'm pretty sure it's a reference to this area: Lost Underworld
It also contains a route to an area called "Fire Spring" in which you fight the boss called "Diamond Dog".
Now, in Un'goro crater, you have a fire spring in the middle of the crater where you fight a powerful fire elemental with a magic shield which needs to be dispelled first. Observe this about Diamond Dog:
"Diamond Dog has LOTS of HP and no real weaknesses. His bite can Diamondize you, and his lethal "glorious light" attack is equivalent to PSI Flash ? and will likely paralyze or kill anyone without a Night or Sea Pendant. Diamond Dog starts with a Power shield, so use the Neutralizer to get rid of it before unleashing whatever Multi Bottle Rockets you have. Keep at it, and eventually you'll topple him."
Also, the Chomposaurs don't resemble devilsaurs in appearance, but they do in sheer size.

The temporary invulnerability you get when respawning in Deus Ex multiplayer is refered to as "Nintendo Immunity" in the player class source code.

The Japanese version of Work Time Fun for PSP had a go-kart mini-game that had a very Mario-ish looking character. They removed him for the American release though.
