Also if anyone is wondering it makes the PSP act like a monitor so all the saves will be on your PS3. I think this may be something to rekindle interest in both platforms. If only Nintendo can do this with VC/Wiiware games.
The prerequisites to get this going: PS3 Official Firmware 2.10, released 12-18-07
PSP Official Firmware 3.80, released 12-18-07

Um yeah? Why would I want to play my PS1 games via remote play on a handheld?

All PSX games have worked on the PSP for a long time now (without the need a PS3...or a PS2 or a PSX...or any games). Sony only started supporting this feature today though.

Plus, that's the free way to go.
Also, why wouldn't you rather play the game with a real controller and a real tv?
I do agree though, Nintendo needs to do this for the DS and allow you to leave the room with the game.

Because as long as you have access to a wireless internet connection or hotspot you can do it anywhere in the world you just leave your PS3 on standby with the remote play active. For the means of connectivity between a console and a portable its quite an evolution.

Someone explain Remote Play to me. Is it only remote on the same network? Or remote across the internets. This goes for playing games and listening to music.
I am considering a PSP.

Alright basically its a PSP hooked up to the PS3 wirelessly you can do it locally( in your house) or over the internet (as long you have some access to the internet like a wireless router or a hotspot) some PS3 games are remote play compatible and the latest firmware made all PSone games remote play compatible, if its disc based the disc obviously has to be in your PS3. Also if I remember correctly you can stream music and videos on to your PSP from your PS3.
What remote play does is the PS3 renders all the graphics and handles all your saves, and it treats your PSP like a wirless controller except that the sound and video is being streamed to it. If your going on vacation or something and want to play your PSone games that are on your PS3 you need to enable remote play on standby (think of this like enabling wiiconnect24 on your Wii) and when this is enabled once the PS3 senses the request from your PSP for remote play your PS3 will turn on and go automatically into remote play mode.
Also if your wondering how some of the missing buttons are emulated heres the formula: L2 or R2: Hold select and press L or R Right Analog: Hold select and use the left analog It's a little cumbersome but it does get the job done.

So if I understand this correctly you will only be able to play PS1 games in your house by your PS3? Isn't the point of handheld games to play them elsewhere besides your home? Especially if those games are already on a much bigger screen without the cramped PSP controls.

It seems to me the benefit of this system is being able to do both. Lets just say you have been playing a PS1 game on your PS3. If you had to leave for some reason, lets say you have to go to work. If you have access to a wireless signal (perhaps through a cell phone, or a free wireless signal), you could continue playing your PS1 game, complete with correct save on the go from your PSP.
Seems like a pretty nifty feature, but I doubt it will get much use. I guess it would be cool to hang out on your porch or something and play a PS1 game on your PSP without having to sit inside.

No, the PS3 renders the graphics and does all the CPU work and etc, your game saves will be stored on your PS3. The PSP gets a stream of the video sound etc and acts as if it was a wireless controller when your playing a game via remote play . The remote play function works virtually everywhere as long as you have a connection to the internet or you can do it in the house just connect to your PS3 directly via wireless.
Edit: Mr. Jack explained it correctly and this post is directed at GP.

This is a ricockulously expensive setup just to play 2-generation-old games.
7.9 for value.

Did the PS1 have more than a handful of games worth playing? I seem to remember buckets of shovelware. PS1 was truly the Wii of its day.

To a lot of people it was RPG heaven and then again it had horrible horrible shovelware like Bubsy 3D.

PS1 has a few good games. Thrill Kill comes to mind, but you won't find this in the Playstation store, or on a retail disc anywhere, unless you play the watered-down version of the game known as "Wu-Tang: Enter the Shaolin".

Did you just recommend Thrill Kill? What is wrong with you? Someone needs to change your title to Don't listen to me about anything ever.

Thrill Kill is awesome, or at least was awesome for it's time. My game-store-owner-buddy actually got a "as close to final as possible" copy (yes, copy, as in CD-R) from one of the (pissed off) creators at an E3 show a long time ago, and burned me a copy of it. I believe the button press to pass the warning screen is different on this copy than several of the other beta versions on the internet.

I actually bought a PS1 about a year ago, along with about 10 games. After six months, I sold the thing for about half what I got for it. What's the big deal about the Twisted Metal series? Seemed like whenever I careened into a wall, I wound up floating in wall-limbo, unable to move. The only games I miss from my PS collection are Darkstalkers and my personal favorite Capcom franchise, One Piece Mansion.
Being able to play One Piece Mansion on the go DOES sound cool, though. I'm not sure if it's 180 bucks worth of cool, but still!

I'm sure the PS1 had a lot of actual gems that people have glossed over. For my part, I remember the cave man action/sim Tail of the Sun fondly, as well as the robot arena fighter Robo Pit. I also focus tested the 2.5D sidescrolling platformer Tomba, which seemed quite solid.
It's weird small quirky titles like these that I have always envied the Playstation consoles for. I can handle not getting Final Fantasy. But Parappa the Rapper? When wonderfully small and innovative titles come out on consoles I don't own, it hurts. (I'm looking at you Psychonauts...)
Oh, and I always wanted to play more of Jumping Flash than the demo disc version...

There was this puzzle game called Kurushi on the 1 (it got renamed elsewhere to Intelligent Cube or something), has anyone else got it?
