Title: Burnout Paradise
Post by: Caliban on December 13, 2007, 12:07:41 PM
I've searched and there was no thread created for this game.
So, did anyone play the demo yet? I've been racing through the demo on 360. I think I'm going to buy this game, I was having fun trying to crash, and jumping, and spinning around, and the speed oh man freakin' sweet.

I think the reason for no thread is people have trouble getting excited for the Mario Party of racing games.

Is this as good as Burnout 3? If so I'm all over this.

Yeah, a whopping five games is exactly the same as more than ten, right?

You are so funny Dirk. There has been a Burnout coming out each year. So yeah, it is like the Mario Party series, expect a burnout every year, the only difference is Mario Party has been doing it for a longer time.:
Burnout Burnout Legends Burnout 2 Burnout 3 Burnout Paradise (The one coming out early 2008) Burnout Revenge
They started coming out in 2002. So what does that make it? About a game a year! Then again why am I even trying with someone who thinks the GTA series is comparable to the Mario series in innovation?

Just because I'm not a blind Nintendo fanboy doesn't mean I'm wrong. =D
Also Mario Party games are f***ing terrible, and keep getting worse with every incarnation, while Burnout started out as meh, and hit amazing with Burnout 3.

I love Burnout 2 and 3; Revenge got a little crazy, but I loved it too!
What's the main difference in Paradise? Can you still hit cars from the back (a feature I like and dislike)?

That option can be turned on and off.
The main difference in Paradise is it's open world and there's no loading screens.

Well if it's done right that can be a cool feature, I'm guessing more than likely, having to drive to races is going to be somewhat tedious.

Burnout 2 is the best of the series.
Burnout Takedown lost the magic of the gameplay (especially the crash mode), but the takedown mode is the start of something better.
Burnout Revenge did not revitalize the crash mode, but takedowns are still fun and being able to ram other vehicles takes some pressure off and gives rise to a new mode. This one is better than Takedown.
I have yet to make time to download the demo of Paradise, but I'm not having high hopes.

I'll download the demo but I'm not too excited I played the latest Burnout a couple of others and once the crashing wore off they weren't anything special. This is a series that should take at least a couple years in between games to make it fresh. The open world sounds interesting but given the limited development time I have a feeling it is going to be like Madden in execution, meaning it is the foundation for something good in another incarnation.

LOL yes, but that game wasn't that amazing. It had a open world but not an open "overworld" where you go and find what your supposed to do, be it a race or whatever like you did in Midnight Run. I think thats what they were implying with Paradise. Smuggler's Run just had menus. Not a bad game though.

Post by: Enner on December 14, 2007, 06:58:43 PM
Sure it wasn't Midnight Club? That was made by the Midtown Madness 1 and Midtown Madness 2 people IIRC (Angel Studios, now known as Rockstar... something).
Paradise looks like Criterion is at least trying new and different things to expand the series. The open world being the main feature and their aggressive push to have as little menus as possible being another. It's a bit neat that stopping at an intersection and revving your car can start a race and that there will be a seamless transition between single player and online mulitplayer. Also, if I remember correctly, you can finally have crashes where you can drive away from. The one iffy thing for me are the stunts. For some reason, jumping a car to do midair spins or barrel rolls crosses some line.
Here's to hoping that Burnout chaining from Burnout 2 and Burnout Dominator is here to stay forever for the series. I felt it was sorely missing from Takedown and Revenge. From the looks of some videos, it looks like I have nothing to worry about.

I reworked my post into an entry for my blog, so here's an edited and more comprehensive response:
So the Burnout Paradise demo came out this week, and I've probably put close to eight hours into it now. I've exhausted everything that's there. I've done big drifts, power parking, barrel rolls, jumped off buildings, found all the billboards, shortcuts, and jumps - the whole nine yards.
I never got to play Revenge. Even though Burnout is my favorite racing series, I agree that the games are coming out too often. In any case, Paradise is definitely something different. The free-roaming puts the emphasis more on exploration and using the environment to pull off big jumps and stunts. And since there are only a handful of events available in the demo that focus is emphasized even more.
I downloaded it on both the PS3 and 360 to see how they compare. There's a bit of difference in the colors and lighting, but aside from that, they're pretty much identical. For those of you that own both consoles, I think this one's going to come down to controller preference.
Last night I played online with the 360. The interface is really smooth. You just open up a mini-menu while you're driving, and in less than 10 seconds the other players are dropped into the same map. It was a lot of fun just roaming the city, smashing into each other, competing for the best scores, and going for crazy goals. We were laughing our heads off, and one of the guys was pissed because he couldn't figure out how I got 100% on power parking.
I love it for what it is, but as a Burnout fan, I have a wish list of things that I can only hope are in the full game:
1. There need to be areas with a lot more traffic - why is the freeway empty?
2. I want crash junctions back, since that is the most fun we've ever had passing a controller around the room.
3. I want replays back. The first game had an awesome crash replay system that let you revel in that moment, and now with Halo 3 and a lot of other big games letting you upload and share videos and screen shots, Burnout needs to get back in that scene so I can show the world the wickedest, craziest crashes, not to mention some of the out of the way stunts you can do now.
But even if those things don't make it in, this is going to be one awesome ride, and I'm definitely picking it up in January. Here's a bit of gameplay from a run I did Friday morning: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/28997.html

The website 'Game Daily' has an article detailing the advertisements in Burnout Paradise. Holy crap, I do not want to play a game that I paid $60 for, tune in to the in game radio and hear a commercial for Nike.
I realize that this game is different where it has a perpetual online world and the alternative is a monthly subscription. Still, the ad revenue potential is so great that a full price game in this model is almost an insult.
I also do not like the change in play style. Its Test Drive with better graphics. Why even call it Burnout? Its like making 5 Superman movies where he flies and has super strength then make a new one where he has a jetpack and wears a mask.
This game may find an audience, and it may win previous fans over, but I long for the gameplay of the other games with new crash zones and racing maps. Maybe I just need to transition over to Flat Out 2?

I do actually want to give this a look, but the whole free roam idea kind of bugs me in the sense that it seems like they're going for a deep immersion factor over the arcade type of game that I had liked to begin with. I hope I'm wrong about it, but I just can't shake the feeling.

This game is horrible. Open world environment with invincible fences everywhere, no instant restarting, Showtime mode is a hopeless replacement for Crash mode, sloppy seconds soundtrack from Burnout Dominator, and everything just feels so lifeless. Uuuuggggh. I should have picked up Flatout Ultimate Carnage instead. >=(((

I don't know if I can agree with all of that. I think adding the open world aspect to the game made it worth getting for me. I haven't felt restricted by the invincible fences, sure they're there and it would be nice to get through some if not most of them, but before you said anything I hadn't really thought of it. I will admit that no instant restarting is a big drawback, however, I believe that they didn't put it in the game because of the open world aspect. It wouldn't make much sense tele-porting back to the start when you can always drive back, but of course Need for speed has been doing it since at least what? Most Wanted? So even that doesn't make much sense. So, yes its a pretty big problem. Showtime mode is good for me, but you're right its not good for crash mode going away. The soundtrack is abysmal. The second I heard Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend, I immediately said, "what the heck?!?", freaked out for about a minute, and then turned the soundtrack off and started my own music. My only real complaint in the game I had before reading all this was that DJ Atomica needs to stop saying who he is. We know. We know...But all in all I think its a great game. I'd give it a 7 out of 10.

I think I missed something with this game. I played it for a couple of hours, and I was seriously underwhelmed. Is there more to it than the races and other events? It seemed like a large chunk of the game was missing, because I never found anything worthwhile. I made my way to the C license doing races and stunt runs, but they all seemed to be the same to me. The most annoying part by far was the slow motion replay EVERY SINGLE TIME my car grazed any other object on the road, be it a car, a barrier, or a building. I couldn't go more than 30 seconds without the game slowing down to show my car crashing. Why? And why bother with an "open world" when you can't even get out of your car? I'm sure to keep an E rating, they had to remove anything resembling people from the game, but Paradise City just felt like a barren world with nothing to do.
And for the record, I enjoy racing games – all types of them in fact: Mario Kart, Gran Turismo, Metropolis Street Racer (the forerunner to Project Gotham Racing), Need for Speed. I just really didn't understand this game.

Criterion was going for a Burnout game where you're free to burn everywhere! Smash here, crash there, and race everywhere. You have the freedom to burn whereever you want in this Burnout playground.
... and that freedom might be working against it. Circuit racing give you clear goals and directions (and a few turns to remember). Now Paradise always has point-to-point races and you have a vague direction to head to. Either you memorize the path you want to take or read the map all the time. Doesn't sound quite fun for some.

Anyone see the new update releases that after the update code named "Cagney" comes out, Criterion will start experimenting with Airplanes for the next update to Burnout Paradise (or another Burnout of some kind). Cagney will include motorcycles, day and night racing, and new online modes. So, what now? You guys think airplanes are a realistic goal for burnout?
Title: Re: Burnout Paradise
Post by: Caliban on July 08, 2008, 09:31:25 PM
It seems like a potential good idea, but how would it actually work? Are they going to clip the wings so the airplanes stay on the ground, or will there be sky races with buildings to run into.

I like the idea, but doing anything but driving around is frustrating since there aren't clear paths when you're racing. And would it have killed them to have made the different sections of town look different? It's all just very blah visually compared to Revenge. And it doesn't help that there's no fullscreen mode, so everything looks sort of zoomed out on my TV...

The Ultimate Box is finally out on PC and it is a beaut of a port. Sadly, there isn't an option for custom soundtracks on the PC. Oh well, you can probably just run foobar, WinAmp, or iTunes in the background and achieve a similar effect.
>And would it have killed them to have made the different sections of town look different?
It probably might have. The system at least. The texture budget or whatever was probably only so big. As for racing, it is definitely a weak point of the game (oh dear, racing sucks in a racing game). Even with only eight possible finish lines, it's a bit of chore to plan a route and navigate when you're chaining burnouts.
Along with Crash Mode, Aftertouch and CrashBreaker are gone as well. A shame as I would've loved to use both during a Road Rage. The addition of an E-Brake is a nice touch; really helps when facing a right-angle turn.
All in all, Paradise is a great installment. It may be more of a step to the side than a step forward, but I welcome it all the same. However, I wouldn't mind a more circuit-based title in the future.

I just tried the demo out and it seems pretty interesting. It feels a lot like Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which is probably the only game in the series that I've enjoyed since High Stakes. It's actually almost a shame that Burnout doesn't have police chases and such. It's true that EA probably needs to do something to help differentiate the two franchises, but I can see plenty of idea working equally well in both.
Immediate cons of the game include the absolutely terrible soundtrack and the fact that there's not actually anyone driving the cars. Weird. I want to see ragdoll physics and full on gore as my character flies through windshields! Oh, and it's kind of easy to get lost during races... :\

I really need to download the updates, but I've been lazy; that restarting thing couldn't have come a moment too soon. And I must say that I'm glad that the Burnout doesn't feature "gore" (ie showing the drivers getting thrown through their windshields), mainly because cars crashing in real life is rarely fun, and the only way the games stay on the light-hearted end of the spectrum is to not show...you know, mangled bodies. I'm sure there's a market for an M-rated Burnout-type game but I won't be picking it up.

GTA IV boots directly into your saved game. Takes a while, though.
I've played Paradise a lot in the past week. The restart feature makes it so much less annoying.

Anyone pick up Cops n Robbers? I did. I've tried getting a game going a couple times now to no avail. Their lobby system really sucks. I want my $10 back.
