"Each time your character dies, more secrets about the forsaken world are revealed!"

Wait, so basically you NEED to die?  Interesting...

That joke makes me sad about the future of mankind.

This game looks pretty interesting. I especially like the dieing to get ahead part. I just don't understand how that would work, and that's exactly the reason why I need to hear more.

This one definitely goes on my list. February is the new November.

February IS the new November. Smash Bros, No More Heroes, Dragon Quest Swords, Professor Layton... this...

As for the PS2 portage, I don't think it's a bad thing. It's actually the Wii's greatest strength: It enables publishers and developers to transition over from the PS2 to the Wii, allows gamers to transition over, and allows markets to transition over. It may not be uber, but if this porting bridge enables the Wii to become the new PS2, I'm all for it.

The GameCube was vastly superior to the PS2, and the Wii is superior to the GameCube (I believe more so than people think). There is no reason for Wii games to be PS2 ports.

This game was only for PS2 in Japan...Atlus must have asked Sting to make a Wii version...

Too bad "hardcore" in the context of RPGs seems to mean enemy stats increase way faster than yours do so you have to stay in an area clobbering random enemies until your stats are increased enough.

"Always changing" sounds like random generated. Sorry but the only dev I trust with random dungeons is the Diablo team.

You don't trust anyone else with random dungeons? Obviously, you've never played ToME.

Best rogue-like ever, gameplay-wise. (Not so much for the graphics...)

I never played Roguelikes, can't be arsed to remember all those letters. I tried Nethack once but couldn't find the stairs so I got bored and quit.

Ugh... that's unfortunate. Nethack is the hardest to learn of all the roguelikes I've ever played. I didn't really like it, either, and if I had played it first, I would have been turned off on the genre myself! TOME is pretty simple in comparison, control-wise. Other than eat (E), drink (q, for quaff), open (o), use skill (m, for magic), a (aim wand), z (zap rod), and the direction keys, there's little else to remember in TOME for a beginner. TOME also has a decent window system, so you can keep a lot of information off the main screen, and it has several tile sets available, so you don't have to look at ASCII all the time. You don't have to remember letters for creatures or items because they all have distinct images.

I never did put stock in any of Nintendo Power's reviews.  Guess I'll have to wait for IGN and (eventually) NWR.

Nintendo Power's reviews have gotten better in recent years, but they occasionally do something like give Puzzle Quest a 4.5.

Puzzle Quest is Bejeweled.  A version of Bejeweled that costs $30.

It's a Bejeweled RPG that fixes everything I hated about Bejoeweled. And regular Bejeweled costs $20 and it doesn't have anywhere near as much content and you can lose it through no fault of your own.

Bejeweled is free.  Anyone who pays for more it is an idiot.

I'm very disappointed to hear that this is probably a stinker.  To be honest, I was thinking about picking this up.

It's a dungeon crawler, why did you even get your hopes up? There's craptons of those and most are just crappy games made because the developer couldn't be arsed to make proper dungeons for their RPG so they resorted to randomness. Unlike western developers it seems to me that japanese devs rarely attempt to optimize their algorithms for quality resulting in bad pathfinding, bad random levels, etc. Freaking Doom has better pathfinding than even RTSes made by japanese devs.

Because there aren't tons of these on the Wii, I've enjoyed every Atlus game I've owned, and the concept was interesting.  Seemed like a sure thing to me.

As someone that never owned the PS2, I was screened from most of Japan's low-quality RPGs; for a Japanese RPG to make it all the way to the West, it usually had to be quite good.  The last time I owned a console that was a haven for RPGs, it was the SNES, and back then even the bad RPGs were pretty good.

Some RPG site gave it a review saying it's decent, take that as you will.

The game is actually quite good.  Don't expect anything technically impressive as it doesn't do anything with the hardware even by PS2 standards.  But the gameplay is pretty interesting even if I'm a bit lost as to what to do right now.  More impressions soon come.

Is it a cheapie port?  Those are great!  30 bucks is just a small enough sum of cash for me to not get TOO frazzled about losing it.
