Title: Will Wright loves the Wii and...
Post by: NWR_pap64 on October 26, 2007, 12:21:32 PM
I think I have gained a little respect for Will Wright. I don't care much for the Sim games but its great to hear important developers approve the Wii. Here's what he said:
“Somebody asked me what I thought next generation meant and what about the PlayStation 3 was next generation. The only next gen system I’ve seen is the Wii - the PS3 and the Xbox 360 feel like better versions of the last, but pretty much the same game with incremental improvement.” - Will Wright

Its great that while other developers are crapping all over the Wii by saying "its not hardcore enough" and other stupid comments a REAL developer comes out and defends it.

But on top of that he confirms that he is working on Spore for the Wii! He confirmed it in an interview. This is what he said:
"We're doing Spore on the Wii, and we did MySims. It takes signifcant. PS3 and Xbox 360 are similar enough that you can. So it comes down to what the interesting major platforms are and which markets we want to hit."

You can read the interview here.

Now, who was the one that said that Spore was too advanced for the Wii?Was it Will himself or some other representative?

Translation: "The Wii prints money? We didn't realize this until recently."

Its too bad Konami has yet to realize that XP .

Konami realizes it but the dollar bills that Sony waves around tends to distract them easily.

But seriously, who was the one that kept saying that the Wii was too underpowered for Spore? I want to know so that we can rub it on his or her face.

It was a Spore developer, but it wasn't Will Wright. Chris Hecker was the guy.

Haha, I remember that comment, he said some other stupid things as well then was forced to apologize (I think he was David Jaffe's twin brother).

Edit: Here we go

Quote

Chris Hecker (Maxis/Electronic Arts): Hecker's statements were the jaw dropping moment in the rant, summed up by, "The Wii is a piece of sh*t!" Hecker said the Wii is two Gamecubes duct-taped together. He says developers make better games by having a platform with power, not for graphics, but using the CPU for computations. Through a slide he compared the Wii to an anorexic and malnourished man. He believes that Nintendo does not treat gaming as an art form, but simply a tool for fun. At the end Hecker had two demands of Nintendo: "Recognize and push games as a serious art form" and "Make a console that doesn't suck ass!" Oh, and don't be surprised if he rushes "the Miyamoto keynote."

For fun here is his "apology"

Quote

I don't know who has read the internet, yesterday. In a [unintelligible] panel I said a bunch of things. I was trying to be thought provoking and entertaining and fun and a lot of the stuff went too far over the top—on the entertaining and fun side, so that it was no longer thought provoking, just inflammatory. And in the process I hurt a bunch of people I care about. And so, I want to apologize now.

When I'm on stage, I'm me. I'm talking talk from me. From me. I'm not representing EA or Maxis.

I want to make two things perfectly clear.

I do not think the Wii is a piece of sh*t. Nintendo needs to be applauded for trying to interface on the controller front, the user interface front, on making games accessible, on making a console that you don't need to mortgage your house to afford.

Secondly, it's totally obvious—and I'm sorry that I implied otherwise—that everyone at Nintendo is passionate at making great games. Some of the games give me hope that we will be seen as an art form on par with movies and books.

I'm afraid that ain't the quote...

The quote I am talking about said that the reason they weren't working on Spore Wii was because the AI in the game was too complex for the Wii to handle. I don't recall that person saying it was a piece of sh*t.

That comment was made last summer. I know because me and my friends discussed it during our podcast.

Spore has been confirmed for DS for a while.

I know, that's why the comment was weird. The DS was getting its own version, yet the developers kept saying the Wii was too weak for it. So how can a handheld be powerful while a console isn't?

Nobody in an official capacity ever said that.

Did I say that?

HELLO! Assassin's Creed is obvious proof that the DS is more powerful than the Wii.

Yes GP, I'm not serious.

Here is probably what you were thinking of, although the comment was not in direct reference to Spore but more of Hecker just bashing the Wii in general:

Quote

Although he stated the system is "severely underpowered," Hecker noted that he wasn't simply referring to the Wii's graphical capabilities. He wants to spend a console's CPU making games more intelligent, and he has found the Wii doesn't have the power to process things like complicated AI.

Yes! That's exactly the quote I was talking about.

So it was also made by Hecker. Funny, I thought it was said by someone else. No wonder he later apologized. If its true that Will Wright loves the Wii I can imagine the dressing down Hecker got afterwards.

Remember, handhelds tend to get severly crippled versions.

Hey, we're getting Spore, so I'm not complaining. It's also not hard to understand someone like Will Wright would love the Wii. Wright's games were never about pushing graphics, but new gameplay and ideas.

If more processing power is needed for computations then take it out of the graphics. I'm reallly not too picky about how many megapixels a game has. Even N64's graphics still impress me at times....

The more I think about this the more obvious the declaration is. I would be surprised if he didn't say that. Will Wright isn't about power or graphics. But new ways of doing things and the new game ideas they bring, something that sounds crazy but once you see it in action you realize that it's brilliant? That's Will Wright, alright.

That way of thinking is why Will Wright is the respected game developer he is, whereas that other dude who bashed the Wii is just some nameless hacker.
