Title: For WiiWare: "Pop"
Post by: Kairon on October 24, 2007, 09:23:08 PM
I just got finished reading IGN AU's interview and HANDS-ON with Nnoooo games' title [b, and I thought that enough was known about this game to finally give it it's own thread! Actually... according to this article, we now know a LOT about this game!

The team has been working on Pop since April this year, making bounding leaps on Nintendo's hardware and setting a good benchmark for quality gameplay that sidesteps high concept games like GTA or Halo for something akin to Lumines or Geometry Wars.

Beyond our exclusive hands-on, we also took the time to talk with Nnooo founder and Pop Lead Designer, Nic Watt, who leads his team of four on a project that he hopes will cement his company in the indie gaming scene and prove that WiiWare is a very viable and profitable platform for smaller teams with great ideas.

Once the game kicks off, a timer at the top of the screen counts down. As you pop bubbles, you get a small boost to your time, keeping you in the game. If you shoot the background, you get a time penalty. Three or four shots like that and the game ends, leaving you to lick your wounds. The strategy slowly becomes apparent - bigger bubbles give you more time, but smaller ones give you more points - which is key in multiplayer. Thus, being quick-thinking and accurate are the skills you need.

Badges, Nnooo's equivalent to the 360's hugely successful Achievements add a bit of razzle-dazzle to the formula. You can earn badges for mean feats in single and multiplayer modes, time trial and in the bonus round modes. Scores are tracked between your friends and on a worldwide level. These plans revolve around WiiConnect24 notifications being sent and the game's official site will also feature tables of the best competitors.

The pricing scheme has also yet to be announced, but indications point towards a tag of around AU$10

Nic Watt: First of all, we're looking at the main mode - it'll have 16 waves. One of the things I find frustrating about Lumines is that you have start from the beginning and progress from all the levels to get to the final ones - and there's no real way of skipping ahead. So we're not going to have a 'level select' but the way we're going to have it is have the waves change based on your score. And in those early waves, if you're really good at the game, you can actually get a really high score quickly, which will allow you to jump past X number of levels.
...
Nic Watt: Yes there is [a cap]- I'm not sure how much Nintendo has revealed about the size limit, but they're obviously concerned with the fact that there are physical restrictions on the storage on the Wii. It's quite clever because there's a maximum that you're not allowed to go above and then there's a suggested size that they'd like you to go in. We haven't heard or seen anything about an external storage device. But they might be streaming content or something over the internet instead.

So now we have three indie developers working for Wii Ware (I'm not counting any of Nintendo's or third party offerings).

These guys seem way ahead of the other two. Hopefully the quality will be good. The other guys may be quiet but its best to don't get ahead of yourself.

Maybe. I do know there was one game that was canceled in favor of releasing it on Wii Ware.

I remember that LineRider was announced a long time ago at GDC this year. Maybe that's coming to WiiWare.
