Title: Just Played God Of War
Post by: Maverick on October 21, 2007, 08:52:09 PM
Well, I know I'm WAY behind, but I finally picked up God of War for the low low price of 20 bucks the other day.  I gotta say, it's a fun game with some great imagery and cool fighting... but, I don't understand why it's so big.  I mean, it's fun and I enjoyed it, but it seems to get so much praise from gaming mags/sites that I was expecting a LOT more.  Like I said, I really enjoyed the game, but it seemed to get solid 9s in the ratings and what not everywhere I've read, and is spoken of highly, and it just didn't feel like a "9" game to me.

Anyone else feel this way, or am I just a crazy guy who can't appreciate a good action/fighter/platformer?  I don't know, I'm usually not one for these types of games in the first place, so maybe it's just not my genre.  Actually this may be my first foray into the genre at all, now that I think about it.

And yes I'm going to pick up the sequel as well.

It's a fun, amazing looking game that's held back by the hopeless puzzles.

"PUSH THIS STATUE OVER THERE! YOU'VE SOLVED IT!"
"PULL THIS BOX OVER HERE! YOU'VE SOLVED IT!"

"Reviewers" appreciate God of War cuz they had to endure The Bouncer, Dynasty Warriors, Tenchu, Shinobi, Devil May Crys, Rygar, and Castlevanias to get to that point.  Look from their perspective:  they sat thru nearly an entire generation to finally receive something that arguably "gets things right".  And they didn't have a "ninja gaiden" they could champion for themselves either.

I don't get the whole God of War hype either. I thought the game was like a crappy Prince of Persia. Repetitive combat and simple boring puzzles. No Thanks. 8 at best in my book.

I would have bought GoW some days ago but couldn't find it so I got Ratchet & Clank 2 instead (my first R&C game). Pretty good game.

I completely understand where you're coming from. I've been spoiled by zelda games for far too long to be blown away by God of War. Also, the first level on the ship is easily the best looking and most exciting level of the game, it's like they spent 75% of their time on the first level, finished it and realized that they had to finish the whole rest of the game in time for release. Also, I beat it in one night at my friends house, sure it took me 11 straight hours and I pulled an all nighter to do it, but it was worth it.

To me, this was a great game that I would never buy. It was pretty short and somewhat superficial, but I liked it a lot. I think about it like pikmin or luigi's mansion, I genuinly enjoyed those games, but I was glad I didn't have to buy them as they were fairly short and once I had beaten them I was done with them.

God of War was the only game that I felt gave my PS2 some sort of purpose . . . =)

I dont get most criticism of Prince of Persia(SOT), on the other hand I get the criticism of the other POP games.

"I dont get most criticism of Prince of Persia(SOT)"

Sands of Time won Game of the Year from pretty much everybody and I think those that criticize the game do so because they feel it didn't deserve such an honour.  I think it's pretty good but there were WAY better games released that year on the Gamecube alone and they probably were not in contention purely because they were Gamecube games.  Sands of Time beat Wind Waker.  I imagine a fair amount of people on this forum think that's bullsh!t and I'll include myself in that group.

It's got high production values and a big marketing push. The over the top violence helps hold over the pathetically weak combat system. After playing ninja gaiden and devil may cry 3, god of war will seem like a watered down action game.

Of course if you REALLY like action games for the combat system, you SHOULD be playing godhand. Now that game got some bad reviews, but that was becuase it had a low budget. But if you can look past that, it has exellent gameplay and is extremely hard. I loved it, the one thing Ninja Gaiden 2 NEEDS to take from godhand is the level up system ( the better you do, the harder your enemies become, NOT the other way around, which is how it should be)

I might pick up Ninja Gaiden Sigma, but I heard it's really hard, and I like my games to be challenging but not "OH MY GOD I WANT TO KILL MYSELF" on the difficulty level.  So I probably wouldn't like Godhand since you said it's difficult.

I actually found God Of War's "Normal" difficulty to be just about perfect for me, except for the very last fight in the whole game, that is.

My roommate is a huge Devil May Cry fan, are they worth picking up?

Devil May Cry 3 is awesome, 1 and 2 aren't as good. The first Devil May Cry is crazy hard and the camera angles and control mechanics are just not up to par, overal l it makes the game pretty frustrating. The DMC Anniversary Pack is a pretty good deal and probably worth owning. I'm pretty sure it goes for about $30 new, which you just can't go wrong with. It is a very hard series though, even on the normal difficulty, so keep that in mind...

I think Zelda was time screwed, was it released in the summer or the fall? If it was released in the Fall then it probably didn't make it into Game of the Year land. However of all the gamecube games i found Pop and Cubivore to be the most fun. Zelda WW was basically another Zelda game, a very good one, but POPSOT while not the first POP game was kinda like a breath of fresh air, and the start of a new franchise, unfortunately POPWW sucks, and i haven't played POPTT, but it seems as though gameplay quality with each game is really random unfortunately.

God of War was made for 18+ and every inch of that game shows it.
From the sex mini game to the various ways Kratos insults his opponents before he rips them in two, GoW does not screw around.

Too bad after that, David J. started sounding like an a$$hat and saying his game was high art, it's not.
While I feel GoW was over hyped it was nice having a game built for 18+ and above.

Because we definitely don't see enough of those 18+ games.

God of War was made for 13-16 year old males, NOT 18+. At that age range the game would've been awesome because the characteristics of that game are EXACTLY what appealed to you at that age.

Yeah for some reason seeing PS2 rendered breastises is less appealing now that I've seen real ones.  :-P

Mindless action and violence still appeals to me though.

Maybe it just appeals to me in some ways because I work in tech support.

At the end of the day I need to play a game where I can rip someone in two while telling them their life is meaningless.

Finally popped in my 3+ year old copy of GoW into the old PS2 last week and I am loving this game.  Maybe I'm just spoiled by my 360, but I had no idea PS2 games looked this good.  I played through a few hours of it when I first got it, but then completely forgot about it.

Got to say, I don't really understand the people on this thread who've decided that just because it's violent and got boobies, that it somehow takes away from the fun of this game.  I don't really care about that stuff, but the production values, the easy but rewarding combat system, and the epic soundtrack has me loving this game.

The main problem I have with God of War is that at it's core it's just a button masher and to me it doesn't feel rewarding.

My problem with the game (and yes I do enjoy the series) is that it is yet another title that tries overly hard to be cool and edgy, which is perfectly illustrated by the prostitutes you can sleep with. It was put in solely to be "cool" to show your friends how awesome you are for getting the game. Not to mention the overly done "Me angry, me buff man that kill you".

No doubt that it is a button masher, but I don't see anything wrong with recognizing that it's an incredibly well made one.

Honestly, the vast majority of "action" games are button mashers, but most are boring - GoW is not.  It's very visceral.

I disagree that it's not rewarding.  Some of the enemies can take lots of damage, and when you are constantly diving out of the way to avoid that critical final hit to your own health just so you can launch another combo at a minotaur or something like that - that's what I feel the vast majority of GoW combat to be like.

I also like that GoW keeps it simple - there's not tons of weapons; you're not overloaded with options.  They give you a weapon, and then let you play around with it for 2-3 hours before they give you a new one.  And as you play, you can slowly level up the ones that you find the most enjoyable.  All of them are pretty useful (except maybe the Medusa one).

I have this problem with Devil May Cry.  I don't really get the "trying too hard" vibe from GoW, but I can understand why one might.  Most of the stuff in the game that's "cool and edgy" is pretty invisible to me, it's not why I enjoy the game.  Cut the blood down to a realistic level, and make everyone wear a shirt, and I'd still love this game.

I love the God of War games, and here's why: They take the Greek panthenon and make it a GAME. It's like playing a Ray Harryhausen movie. Fighting the Hydra in the first game is INCREDIBLY cool, and the set pieces in the series are beyond compare. And all you guys whining about the combat being easy and button-mashy, you need to play the game on Hard or God Mode.

Every enemy has to be approached differently, and what was initially a button-masher quickly becomes a process of figuring out which attacks in your enormous arsenal work best on which enemies, or which situations. Parries are tantamount to success on the tougher difficulties, and managing your MP suddenly matters a whole lot. I was able to beat God of War and Chains of Olympus on God Modes, but the griffon stages in GoW2 kicked my ass.

The puzzles are simple, but I like it that way. It means the game doesn't stagnate while you rack your brain over how to navigate a goddamn Water Temple. And I like that the games are generally pretty short, between 7 and 10 hours, I think. It means you can play through it multiple times.

The only low point for me is the Challenges. I beat the Challenges in GoW1, but they were unbelievably hardcore in GoW2 and I could only beat the first two. Ridiculously hard.

I can't wait to play GoW3 just for the Cestus. I'm in love with those Lion mittens.
