I want better combat in RPGs yet I hate SRPGs. They try to be RPG but really are just half-baked S. Regular RPGs have you move in a world that seems more or less alive, interact with other people, go through a story and of course fight. SRPGs kick the whole non-combat stuff out and leave you with a menu system to represent a whole town. Moving around is done on a battlefield and after the battle is over the field is left. Combat differs from a TBS only in that you have to level and equip your characters instead of just using strategy. This is totally the wrong approach for the issue with RPGs having too uninteresting battles.

What needs to be fixed about RPGs is the combat, not the rest of the game. The combat in an RPG needs more strategy but the RPG still needs worlds to explore and such, otherwise the "roleplaying" done is just stat tweaking.

There's so much to combat that isn't modeled in regular console RPGs yet, things like position are completely ignored and I have yet to see cover being used in any way in an RPG. I don't mean adding some action elements to the combat, e.g. fighting game mechanics, I mean adding some actual tactics in there and having fights be more than a silly standoff with PCs and enemies slugging it out round for round. Really, why can't we have something like Fallout's combat system in a console RPG? Why can't we have a party that can move like a squad in an FPS and when combat starts you can move them around to optimize your position advantage? Kinda like turning the current area into an ad-hoc battlefield for SRPG gameplay and returning to regular RPGing after the battle is done?

I have wanted an RPG that plays like a typical Final Fantasy type game outside of battle but with a deep tactical combat system for years.  The games that have come closest are the old Ultima games, but they went in a different direction towards the end.

I'd like to see it work like this.  Instead of randomly running into invisible enemies, you get some kind of indication that enemies are near, and the scene switches from the abstracted overworld to a battlefield complete with obstacles and elevation changes based on the type of terrain.  Everyone starts in the open, as if traveling by the easiest path, and depending on your and their scouting skills, one side may get extra turns before the other appears to move into ambush positions.  This is part of the dream RPG I've been working on in my head for years, but I won't bore you with the rest.

You know what there aren't enough of?  Action/RPGs...There's already a bunch of SRPGs and Dungeon Crawlers in development for Wii, but no ARPGs!  Makes me sad...

Traditional RPGs suck. Give me an engaging battle system or give me death. I won't even mind the terrible story then.

There's enough action RPGs out there. RPGs where tactics reign supreme instead of braindead grinding or reflexes are rare.

All KDR needs.. if you don't know it already.. there are also some pretty pictures and stuff on this site


really.. this game.. it took me months to beat it and never did it become a chore, secret items and towns hidden everywhere , the story taking unexpected turns .. which turned out to be caused by my own playing style.. characters, deep enough that you will care about them..and and.. and... so much more..

those were the days.. *sigh*
I would really appreciate more games of this kind

Fallout is what every RPG should aspire to be.

...But that's just my opinion. I can't stand FF-style RPGs where you don't have any choices.

Agreed! (Though this has nothing to do with Strategy RPGs)

Ogre Battle, not Fallout obviously. I guess what the world really needs is a new Fallout that's not made by Bethesda...
