Seems Brawl has been delayed in Japan for awhile, US is getting it first... now they have to be worried about spoilers it seems.

Europe has finally swallowed up the rest of the world!
We known since E3 we're getting it in 2008. But really... did you think it was that feasible to get two mario titles, metroid, zelda AND smash bros within one year?

Delay Smash it's worth it. I'll have more time with Galaxy and Smash will get that nice final coat of paint. Also, HOLYFUCK SONIC IS IN BRAWL!!!1!1!!

Smash of Delay is ok with me...as long as Sonic is NOT the only character they add for this update...and perhaps it also means that we will get voice support in the game.
If I was Nintendo I would delay Brawl and Battalion Wars 2 until I could get voice chat in the game, and I would try to push up Wii Fit and perhaps even Super Mario Kart Wii for 2007 holiday season, because Kart online doesn't need chat ability, and Wii Fit would be a killer device for this holiday season.
Nintendo gamers would still have the powerful Super Mario Galaxy as their big holiday game, and it would mean that 3rd parties would have a better holiday season on the Wii, killing that stupid concept that 3rd parties can't make a profit on the Wii.

I'm fine with a delay. I wish Melee had been delayed, personally.
They can take as long as they need with Brawl, and the other reality is, they won't need Brawl to push Wiis this Xmas.
If I were them, I'd delay it until next Xmas to ensure the Wii sells big that Xmas too.

I really want the game to be the best it could possibly be, so if theres a delay then thats fine. There are alot of thing i would improve in the last smash bros.

I was surprised to see Sonic on the blog... not because I didn't expect him to be in the game, I just thought that if they were going to show him on the blog, they would have done it already.

I figured they'd have waited until damn near launch.
They announced Sonic now to distract us from the release date slipping, which worked.

Let's not get too hasty. Delays are fine, but a year long delay would suggest that there's something really wrong with the game and all indications point to it being almost finished. They'd just be adding more and more on top of what's already there and while more is certainly better most of the time, I think there's a point where something is complete enough to just let it go.

While I do understand what you're saying, from Nintendo's business perspective, they have no reason to release Brawl until they're absolutely ready to.
They're swimming in money right now and the Wii still barely stays on store shelves. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if they held off Brawl until the Wii sales began slowing down.

Yes, but that's true of any of their titles. Why release Super Mario Galaxy either? They could delay that and add playable Luigi, extra levels, powerups etc. Wii has sold plenty with very few AAA games.

It's hard to say, if their working on fine tuning game mechanics or adding new characters. It seems a delay would be most likely to fine tune things already in place. Although if they recently got through some red tape for a new character that could be a good reason as well.

I don't know what AAAs they have next year, at this point, but I know they'll have Galaxy this year so they almost might as well push SSBB to next year to have that one AAA Xmas title.
They have some interesting concept games coming, but I've not seen anything which screams "must have" other than Galaxy and Brawl (from Nintendo, anyway).

I think you may have misunderstood me..... Your point is to delay Brawl until next year because the Wii stills sells out and Nintendo could potentially hold it until sales wane. That may be true, but by that same logic, why release anything that's finished? They could delay Super Mario Galaxy as well for the exact same reason and add a bunch of new content while they're at it. My point, however, is that while they could delay these games for a sales slump, they shouldn't need to because they should still be making games of that quality. Why hold on to a game for an entire year just in case sales dip?
And so far, Mario Kart is coming out next year. Wii Fit could be big if the Wii Sports audience if willing to shell out upwards of $80 for it. 3rd party support is getting stronger, better and more consistent. I don't think Nintendo needs to hold on to Brawl as long as good games across the board in a variety of different genres come out for the Wii which is what they should be doing in the first place. They shouldn't need to use Brawl as a crutch to get them past possible hard times.

Actually, I was suggesting that they probably figure Mario will have this Xmas covered and that there's no sense in launching two of their top games side by side for the same Xmas.

I have this odd hunch that Sega allowed Nintendo to use Sonic only of they were allowed to do the olympics game, and the delay is somehow involved in that, to give the olympics game more chance to sell this christmas or something.

That's what I've been saying all along. Brawl was going to murder Mario and Sonic Olympics in terms of hype. The delay gives the game to have a small presence and have the spotlight for a while before the BIG cross over event begins.

I think that was the deal: Sega develops M&S: O and Nintendo puts Sonic in Brawl.
I'm still waiting to see what Konami's end of the deal was for Snake in Brawl...
Title: RE: Smash Bros Spoilers:
SONIC APPEARS
Post by: Adrock on October 11, 2007, 04:43:49 PM
I don't know.... That benefits Sega far more. Nintendo gets yet ANOTHER party game on Wii and one that includes Mario again while Sega not only will earn a lot of dolla-dolla-bill y'all for publishing the Olympics game, they also get to advertise their character, who has lost tons of credibility over the past few years, in arguably the biggest game coming out on Wii, which itself, so far, the most successful next-gen console. Of course, this opens up Brawl to more cross-over fans, especially those who have been yearning for a Mario vs. Sonic anything since the 16-bit era, but, like Snake, it just seems like Nintendo is giving more than what they're getting in return.
So if there was a deal, I would think that there's more to it than that. Although, this could just be Nintendo a case of Nintendo being charitable enough to help out 3rd parties.

I don't think it's "charity", as Snake being in Brawl makes it more appealing to the MGS/Sony nuts who would've ignored it otherwise. And, of course, this may be Nintendo's way of trying to be Konami's buddy for its Metal Gear games after Solid 4 (and you know there will be).

Well, I already mentioned as much.... my point is that the "deal" as we're assuming it right now is more favorable to Konami and Sega than it is for Nintendo hence my "it just seems like Nintendo is giving more than what they're getting in return" remark.

Sega is paying for development of the game, though, and Nintendo will be reaping 50% of the profits, I'd guess. That's a deal for Nintendo unless Sega got something else out of it.
I know Sega's characters don't have the same appeal as many of Nintendo's, but there's still more money to be made by Nintendo since they didn't foot the bill.
And like I've said before, Nintendo's been in this business too long to give anything away for free. I'm sure they've bargained for SOMETHING out of Konami...

The fact that their games haven't been selling all that well lately, with a few exceptions, and Nintendo's have?
A Mario Olympics game would have sold a lot more than a Sonic Olympics game, so while it might be true that Nintendo will get more profits in this scenario... it ignores the fact that it's giving Sega a opportunity that they probably never could have achieved by their lonesome, even if you cut the final figure in half.

If Nintendo gets that big a percentage of profits, then that's a bit more fair, but if I remember correctly, Sega is publishing the game. This game can't possibly cost that much to make (those party games are f*cking goldmines) so even if Sega pays for development they'll likely make it back and then some. I know we don't know specifics, but Sega could've easily just licensed the characters from Nintendo, possibly a heavy sum, but one well worth it due to the it-will-sell-like-hot-cakes-anyway-even-if-it-sucks factor.
As for Konami, I'd like to point out The Twin Snakes again. Everything about that deal points to Nintendo getting a raw deal. Unless we see something concrete down the road (hopefully sooner rather than later), I'm still holding on to the notion that Nintendo was just being kind.

Mario DDR, which sold SURPRISINGLY well, so much so that they needed to have a second production run of it because the demand was so high.
Though, I think Konami owes them more than Sega does: Sega has at least brought solid support to the GC in the past whereas Konami spent its duration pooping on it.
Also, on the subject of Sonic, I'm guessing his primary weakness is that he is a melee-only character with no ranged attacks. He'll hurl around the levels like a bat out of hell, but he'll be difficult to control unless you've mastered him.
Also, he doesn't have a good standing range attack, like some of the sword wielders do, meaning he needs to get close to attack. Sonic will be the ultimate in quick-strike tactics.
Should make for an interesting character...

I don't know, Nintendo is a business, Even if nothing is in the works right now, they will use this as leverage to negotiate with Konami.

Mario DDR was still pretty limited. And Nintendo also gave them Mario to use. On top of that, I still think Nintendo gave up a lot more. I do agree that Konami owes Nintendo a lot more than Sega does, for all the MGS4 advertising, if nothing else. At least we already got an exclusive, built specifically for Wii Sonic game which wasn't that bad.
As for Sonic, I agree. They made him easier to control than I assumed he'd be by allowing his spin attack to curve upwards. He does seem like a difficult character to master, though all the characters were difficult to master so I guess, a more apt statement would be that Sonic is one of the more difficult characters to master. Still, the 178 different moves he can use to get back on stage is a positive.
Quote I don't know, Nintendo is a business, Even if nothing is in the works right now, they will use this as leverage to negotiate with Konami.
Possibly though using that in future negotiations could sour a deal. No one likes that friend. I don't think it's ever going to work out between Nintendo and Konami business-wise until they both realize that they can benefit from each other. What we've seen with The Twin Snakes was bull. It was 99% old gameplay and design. Silicon Knights could have done so much more with that game.
