It's always rare to find a really good 1680x1050 wallpaper, so I always end up resizing a grotesquely high resolution image to fit...

This is what I have on my computer at work.  I actually have a clean desktop, but that is because last month my hard drive crashed and I had to get a new one and start all over

I have to say, I'm pretty much an OSX convert.

I don't see myself ever going back to Windows for everyday use.

My desktop must be the messiest so far.

I have a rotation of wallpapers created from covers of DVDs in The Criterion Collection. I didn't make 'em, and obviously they don't fit my massive iMac monitor. This is a sampling of three, I think I have about 20.

Does Bill really play so much Half-Life that it's necessary to have three links on his desktop?  Why not just one link to steam?

Also, Winamp?  Who the Hell used Winamp anymore?  What is this--1998?

I like his Legend of Zelda gold cartridge icon for some Adobe something or another.  Bill will just have to give me that!

Because I like clicking on each individual icon when I want to play each game! =)

And Winamp is awesome and simple, things that iTunes and WMP and whatever else people use are not...

Okay here we go =D

First up, the "bare bones" UI. Basic desktop nothing open and up on screen:

The desktop picture is somewhat customized. It used to have a WoW picture in it but I re-edited it and fit in some concept art from Star Craft 2.

Now here's that tiger launch app I was talking about:

It's a free app and it's been around for a long long time. It lets you customize what apps appear in the dropdown box from a check list. I like it because it keeps the dock relatively clutter free.

And lastly . . . triforce icon for the HD =D

I use Foobar2000, I don't think you can go any more simple than it.

This is what my desktop looks like for the time being.

Okay time for a mini rant.
The whole windowed operating system has outlived its usefulness and needs to go away. So you boot up your computer to the desktop and what's the first thing you do? COVER IT UP WITH A MAXIMIZED WEB BROWSER. This is what most people do.  So oopsy,  now those icons on your desktop aren't easy to access! what to do? I know, let's put them all program lists under a start button. Well digging through five button clicks just to play Solitare is a pain, so let's list the most used apps in the first part of the start menu. Hmm, that still requires a click to show the start menu. I know! let's make a quick launch bar and put it on the taskbar. Better yet, let's also put a program icon in the group of icons on the right that load on startup. NOW WE HAVE FIVE ICONS FOR INTERNET EXPLORER SCATTERED HITHER AND YON ACROSS THE OS. Remember those early pictures of Windows where the desktop showed cascading windows with a spreadsheet, a photo and your calculator all layered over the top of each other? NO ONE USES THEIR PC THAT WAY. All major applications are maximized and dragging and resizing windows is useless for most of the time you are working at your computer.

I remember the good ol' days when every program was always maximized and there was only one place to find all your apps. It was called 'Mac OS 6 before Multifinder'. Ah, those were the days.

Oh yeah baby. I claim first dual screen.

And no I don't have a background image to fill it. I work with Photoshop and Flash and Illustrator and have two email clients running along with Trillian all day so the less resources used for filling space I never see the better.

And yes I'm as bad with my Half-Life icons as Bill is. You'll also find FEAR and UT2004 in there.

"now those icons on your desktop aren't easy to access! what to do?"

Well if you're on Vista, you click the "Show Desktop" button right next to the Windows icon in the bottom-left of the screen... =3

Also, Vista has a pretty convenient way of shuffling through all your maximized windows...

Wait I am missing something . . . what's redundant?

What's the overlap? you mean like one window over another?

Also, you don't have to have icons appear on your desktop it's an option (one I always have off).

Here is Expose on Mac (which is one of my favorite features of the OS and has been around for like 2 years or so maybe longer):

This is using the "show all" function mapped to the F9 key natively but can be changed to your liking. It shows all open windows running and you can click on whichever to bring it up.

Need to see the windows for one running program only? Like say photoshop? Just hit the F10 key:

Need to get back to your desktop? F11 pushes everything to the side:

<3 <3 Expose.

Check it

All you Mac people need to get on Quicksilver and get rid of all that damn clutter!

Oh yeah, and I'm with Pale. Mac convert and I'd never go back to Windows for personal use.

EDIT: I had to shrink down that image, I hate when the forum stylesheet is broken by images

Please. Show desktop has been around since the Win 98 days. Cascade has been around since Win 3.1! Both OS interactions are KLUDGES. They solve a symptom, but do not solve the problem. You need to come around the Miyamoto Philosophy.

Your operating system is definitely better at shuffling through windows than mine. But that's only because I'm running Jaguar, which doesn't have glorious Exposé.

Once you get expose you can never go back. Though I guess at this point you're probably waiting for OS X 10.5 which would make sense.

Well you could just use an application like Quicksilver. Basically it keeps an index of everything on your computer and lets you bring up a search window with a simple Command+Space keyboard entry. From there you type the name of anything on your file system and it finds that item and anything related to it. I don't keep anything on my desktop anymore and nothing in a Quick Launch bar because I can just use Quicksilver as an app launcher once it finds an app I'm looking for. That concept combined with a Windowing application seems like the true future to me. Why bother digging through the HDD when you can make the computer do it for you?

Good points from Mr. Jack.

I don't use Quicksilver but I literally fly around my comp. Everything is a single click away and I am never resizing windows. Expose can shift stuff aside if need be if I have lots of stuff running ::shrugs:: I don't see the big deal or how windowed OSes have outlived their usefulness.

That's a good concept if you stick to the keyboard most of the time. Problem is, mouse or touchpad or stylus is the preferred form of input. Moving back and forth is a slow down. Don't get me wrong, I know how much faster that input can be. Put someone proficient in Word Perfect 5.1 against some proficient in Word 2007 and they non-GUI app will win everytime.

P.S.: I am not CRAZY BILL. OPEN YOUR EYES TO THE WAY OF SHIGGY.

P.P.S: Wandering, that's a picture of Mont Saint Michel, the coolest castle ever. Here is the wallpaper I use http://www.206tours.com/tour43/Mont%20Saint%20Michel%204.JPG and here are some more cool pics of the place.

Yes, you can type faster and make adjustments to your document formatting faster because your hands never leave the keyboard. WP5.1 was text based and command were done through keyboard shortcuts not menu or point and click.

Um, Word has keyboard shortcuts. Even if you have to hit alt and a few other keys to get to something.

Non-Word example. Say I'm working in Photoshop and I want to crop a selected area. ALT-I-P does the trick, and its quicker than reaching for my mouse to drag the cursor to the menu and select it.

All it takes is for someone who works in it all the time and is truly interested in saving time with what they do.

Sorry Mashiro, let me respond. If it works for you, great, There's nothing wrong with that. I just don't think 90%  of the computer using audience would be as productive with it as you are, or to put it a better way, they wouldn't put the effort forward to be as productive as you are with Expose.

It's like dual analog vs the wiimote. Dual Analog may work fine for some people, but it's a barrier and there is a better way to control video games. Nintendo proved that by doing something new.

Photobucket makes my pictures so small

I don't keep anything on my desktop.  Before I had my own computer, my mom would keep dozens of icons on the desktop, and most of those were just folders with dozens of icons inside them.  I always said when I had my own computer, my desktop would be empty.  And it is!  (except for that one folder and that one image)  I even keep my Dock hidden.

Ubuntu.  Me likes.  Gnome > KDE.  Multiple desktops for the win (bottom right, organized by function).  App switcher + dictionary tool at top, system monitor and force quit at the bottom.  Favorite apps top left.  Very nice.

No compiz-fusion for me though, stupid radeon x1900.  I bought it for gaming, but I don't even PC game anymore (pretty much because that would require me to reinstall windows, which I DON'T want to do).  Oh well, everything's at least running smoothly now (except for connecting my pocket pc to my virtual XP machine, but that's a different issue...)

As an aside, if I absolutely had to reinstall windows, it would be XP.  I tried Vista and liked it at first, but after a while I just got so sick of it malfunctioning.  Vista caused what I actually think were software based hardware failures, something which I have never experienced anywhere else.

Do you mean who made it or what the series is?  If the latter, it's FLCL, or Fooly Cooly...Or Furi Kuri, it doesn't really matter...

My current, both cute and scenic...I ended up just clearing everything off except for the absolute essentials: my stuff and my friend, the recycle bin...

I hate desktop icons. They ruin my pretty pictures

It's a picture I downloaded of some valley on Santorini, one of the Greek isles.  I got it from interfacelift.com, a good site for hi-res widescreen wallpapers.  I prefer photography and natural shots, instead of cartoon or graphic design stuff.  I've gotten a ton of great skyline shots from that site.

Yes, my Start bar is on the side.

For the Record I like Gnome as a Desktop and I like the Apps that come with KDE.  Though its been 2 or so years.

Ted Nasmith is my favorite Tolkien artist, because it's so easy to put yourself in his paintings. Can't you just imagine yourself walking down that winding path?

I use a bunch of browsers actually.  They're all under the extended quick-launch bar.  I just happen to like IE6 more than IE7.  I have no security concerns and I like the IE6 layout more.

This thread is one reason we need better forum software.  I really like how some forums let you "hide" pictures in spoiler tags - then the thread can load normally and you can just load the large images as needed.

Anywhoo, My desktop sucks.
