Title: The New Music Thread
Post by: Stogi on August 07, 2007, 10:23:36 AM
This thread is for posting new music that you have been listening to. It is to help others branch out into other genres/artist that they may not now much about.

I'll post first so others may follow the template.

Antibalas Afrobeat Ochestra

A friend turned me on to this group a couple weeks ago, and now I'm obsessed. They incorporate both jazz and samba music into a new style of music that is irresistible. It reminds me of Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack, but more bass (the instrument) heavy. It lays down the groove while the low brass gives it it's texture. The high brass freestyles the melody, while the guitar carries the rhythm. The piano and organ love to break into the music with catchy rhythms that just build upon what's already there. The drums just hold the beat down throughout, occasionally doing a couple of breaks. Every once and a while a lyricist will appear, speaking in his or her own native dialog. They compliment the music very nicely and add to the experience rather than detract from it. Also, there are speak and repeat moments which are very common in African music. It's honestly the greatest band I've listen to in a long time.

If you want to listen to a sample, "Elephant" might be the best choice. By the way, all their albums are great.

Strunz & Farah

A couple of months ago, I had some people over at my parents house while they were away and I was back from college. Randomly, this dude that one of my brother's friend's invited gave me about 10 cd's worth of music. Everything he gave me was great, but this was definitely the best. It is a guitarist from the Middle East and another from Spain. They are both extremely talented. The music is a very chilled out, very light and relaxing. It is the perfect music to play if your trying to get intimate with someone. I'm not talking about seduction or anything like that (though it compliments that also), I'm talking about conversation. This music fits so well as the background for a relaxed atmosphere. If you ever have a little get together play this music. It is a blend of jazz, salsa, samba, arabian music, and spanish guitar. If you liked OOT's Garudo fortress music or Skies of Arcadia's Horteka Island, than you will love this because it's about a million times better. ALL THERE ALBUMS ARE AMAZING!

Sample "Andina",  "Fuente Veija", and "Capricho Nocturno" if you like SOA
Go here and sample "Centellas" and "Secret Village" if you like OOT. It's from a different album.

Alright, Mr. Stogi, I'll play your game. But I can't be bothered to find screen shots right now.

I've found a couple of bands lately that I can't seem to get enough of. The first I heard of from a guy at a coffeeshop who caught their act at the Austin City Limits festival. They are:
1. What Made Milwaukee Famous: (album: Trying to Never Catch Up. Songs to check out: "Mercy, Me" and "Curtains")
If you like alternative, with lots of energy and variety throughout all the songs on the album, CHECK 'EM OUT NOW. They're experimental enough to keep me happy, and the lead singer has a really great voice with good technique/style. Sure, all their songs are about love and break-up and such, but aren't most songs anyways?

Up next is a band a co-worker recommended to me. I had $1.10 burning a whole in my iTunes account, so went to download their best song. I ended up being unable to decide, so purchased the whole album in a local record shop.
2. The Format (album: Dog Problems. Songs to check out: "Snails" and "Timebomb")
Alternative-pop-rock or something. The two things that drew me to these guys were: upbeat songs and great harmonies. Any band that can keep fresh sounds coming for a whole album while still tying everything together nicely, AND showing that they try to bring new ideas to the table-er-studio, gets a nod of approval from me.

BUMP

Nercoing this topic.

Prince. LotusFlow3r

I dunno if anybody is a prince fan like I am but my wonderful girlfriend picked up this for my birthday.

It's 3 albums MLPSoUND (a pop album), LotusFlow3r (experimental guitar album) and Elixar (some girl he wants to make famous album).

MLPSoUND is mostly "meh" to me, save for a select few tracks that absolutely save the album. "No More Candy 4 U" is absolutely fantastic.

Now, LotusFlow3r is pretty damn awesome.  The influences in his guitar playing all over the place from blues, to jazz, to trippy rock.  "Dreamer" reeks of Hendrix influence, yet can stand of its own.  A lot of the songs are very untraditional in sound but are just as catchy as many of prince's older material.

haven't listened to elixir.

Next album I intend to buy is Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime II and hopefully Shooter Jennings new album The Wolf

After watching a recent Lincoln MK commercial I knew I had to search for the song that is played in it... it's from Shiny Toy Guns (well actually it's from Peter Schilling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Schilling)), and is titled "Major Tom". I can't stop listening to it, and the lyrics are just awesome.

It seems I have a knack in liking these kind of songs. I love "Twilight" from Electric Light Orchestra too which is just as awesome as "Major Tom" in its zaniness.

Well, I just learned something.  I was confused because I had seen a Lincoln commercial featuring a (bad, IMO) cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity."  I knew of Schilling's "Major Tom," which is based on the same character, but I've never heard it.  The Wikipedia articles for both songs claim Shiny Toy Guns did a cover, which was even more confusing.  Finally, I simply watched the commercial on Youtube, where I learned that there were actually two Lincoln commercials featuring the songs.  I had only seen the "Space Oddity" one.

So if anyone else was about to get all haughty about some upstart band getting credit for a Bowie classic, don't.

It was the contrary for me. All I found on youtube was the bland song and commercial, and it was getting on my nerves because I couldn't find the commercial that I watched on TV with "Major Tom".

When I go into space I want to be listening to "Major Tom".

hm??

By the way i really want to contribute to this thread, i'm just waiting to do it properly and follow the example in the OP with some album art, so i'm waiting to have some free time at home to write something coherent up.

Speaking of the OP, has anyone mentioned how that.. thing... looks like Zoidberg?

I was talking about how you two can't be the first to have thought about signing that song while blasting off to space. I'm hoping at least one astronaut had an ipod or something.

Also, yes, it does remind me of Zoidberg. And also, I look forward to seeing what you write up.

Astronauts wouldn't be allowed to take their iPods with them, and I doubt they'd want to sing a song about dying in space, anyway.  :)

Guys, guys...

Supergrass. SUPERGRASS. Specifically, their album, Diamond Hoo Ha.

It rocks hard, guys, it rocks hard. I love every track on it. I've had it in my car for months, and every time I go to take the CDs out of my car to cycle new CDs in to the rotation, I can't bear to take it out. It's just too awesome.

Why this band isn't bigger than they are, I have absolutely no clue.

Their song "moving" was sampled by MC Lars on his album "The Graduate" for his track "Ahab" and its really good. I downloaded the Supergrass track and enjoyed it but never bothered to get an album.

They are now on my "to download" list, at your recommendation.

"Moving" was the first song that grabbed me by them, too. Their latest album (Diamond Hoo Ha) has a pretty different sound from that one... much more rocking.

That whole album is begging to be on Rock Band or Guitar Hero. But they're from across the pond, so they just haven't garnered as much attention here, unfortunately.

That makes it even MORE interesting to me. I can't wait to get home and d/l some of their tunes now. I think almost half the artists/bands on my ipod are from 'across the pond.'

Crystal Castles are a Canadian Electronic duo i discovered in one of those fortunate accidents. I couldn't for the life of me remember who performed "the Message" so i wiki'd the title and upon reading up on Grandmaster Flash, Crystal Castles was noted as one of the many artists to sample that famous synthesizer melody. I checked out the sample in question and fell in love with their style. I could write more about them but nothing i say could top this quote from wikipedia:

Quote from: Wikipedia.org
Their musical style has been described as having "ferocious, asphyxiating sheets of warped two-dimensional Gameboy glitches and bruising drum bombast pierce [the] skull with sheer shrill force, burrowing deep into the brain like a fever".

Here's some samples for the lazy:

Magic Spells (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSsvcT9cDZ0) - which contains the Grandmaster Flash sample from "The Message". This is a teaser clip, a promo for their debut album. WARNING: VIDEO CLIP CONTAINS DISTURBING [albeit computer generated] IMAGES
The full song can be heard here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lwuFEz_ydo&feature=related)

Crimewave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2gdbQpESNY&feature=related) - one of my favorite tracks. This clip is actually some a different mix than that of the album, this is more like a live version where as the album version sounds more cold and robotic (which i prefer) but at least here you can see the singer is pretty cute.

Black Panther (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR3XB-982Bg) - this track is more upbeat and wild, its also put to Tron clips for lols

Interpol - Turn Out The Bright Lights
You Am I - Sound As Ever
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells

Led Zeppelin - III
Ween - The Mollusk

What I'm listening too:

Dolly Parton: Greatest Hits

So I picked up Dolly Parton's greatest hits a few days ago and was completely blown away by a lot her songs.  For starters, she has an amazing voice.  Second, she sung "Jolene" which is one of the greatest songs ever.  I'm serious.  It's beautiful.  "Love is Like A Butterfly" is another very pretty song, but it's not bitter like "Jolene".  So is "Coat of Many Colors", which is based based on a true story.  Of course she has more popy songs like "9 to 5" which is so damn catchy.

Great stuff, I really recommend her.

Barry White: Greatest Hits

Yeah, I know another greatest hits but man this guy has some great hits.  His study of classical music really shows in some of his recordings.  He writes like EPIC sexy time songs.  His ultra-low, ultra-awesome voice just sounds completely awesome.  Songs like "Never Never Gonna Give You Up" and "I'm Just Gonna Love You a Little Bit More, Babe" are GREAT.  I love soul/r&b music, i really do.

Andre 3000: The Love Below

I haven't really listened to the Speakerboxxx section, save for "The Way You Move".  But, WOW ...this album is FANTASTIC.  I've only listened to the "The Love Below" section of the double album, but my god it's amazing.  It's just one huge fusion of several music genres.  One track will sound like funk song, the next a Lou Rawls track and another sounds like something Phil Collins would write.  Awesome variety in this album.  It's really hard to pin down a central sound of this awesome, but dammit I love it.

The track "Dracula's Wedding" is soooo good.

Andre 3000 is really under credited as a great artist.

Daft Punk: Discovery

I love the Techno duo from France.  This is their famous album that has the songs "Harder Better Faster Stronger" and "One More Time", which are both really, really awesome.  But a bunch of the album is really good too, like the melodic  "Digital Love" and the "Aerodynamic which has one of the coolest synth solos EVA.  I also think "Face to Face" deserves some credit as it's one of the best tracks from the album that nobody ever talks about.

I like the song "Jolene" but i've never heard the original, just the version by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBoTwOTKw0I). They're an all-around awesome cover band by the way.

I have many a special memory where Daft Punk's "Something About Us" was playing in the background.. hehe

I've been trying to decide what I think of Seether's Careless Whisper. It starts off kinda weird, not as strong as the original. Then it goes into some strong guitar riffs and does a great job of translating the song. But its one of those songs that has such a tangible connection to my childhood that hearing the cover is jarring. Most of you guys won't have the same feelings as I do, and I bet the original was released before you were born.

I don't want to buy the fucking Kanye West disc.  Sell something else.

Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Bo Diddly are absolute essitentials.

Janelle Monae is an artist who doesn't quite fit into any genre. I have her EP and its incredible, because its not quite anything specific.

Here's her video for Many Moons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZyyORSHbaE

BeYond!

VERY! She is so weird and quirky.

Indeed she is!  But did you catch the reference?  They plugged her on the Podcast Beyond show on IGN a few weeks back and everyone invaded the YT video with comments  "Beyond!"  She loved it as it drove up the viewer and vote count.

No i didn't get that one LOL. Do you have the link to the IGN podcasty?

Here's a link to the Beyond mob (http://www.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments&v=LHgbzNHVg0c&fromurl=/watch%3Fv%3DLHgbzNHVg0c) in the comments section, and here's a link to the show. (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/973/973511p1.html)  Not sure which one it was though, it was about a month ago.

Over the past week I've had to visit 4 Targets and 3 Best Buys in order to finally locate the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs CD.  Retails complain that people don't buy music anymore, but they don't bother to stock CDs for us to purchase!

I don't want to buy the fucking Kanye West disc.  Sell something else.

/end random rant

THIS! This is one of the reasons i stopped buying cd's and started aquiring my music by other means which we can't discuss. If I hit up a store the Tuesday a new album I wan't is supposed to be there, and its not, i say **** it and go home to fire up my computer.
I used to love collecting albums on cd's and flipping thru the artwork or reading thru the liner notes (some bands have personality and had some weird **** put in there) while listening to the album for the first time. But the lack of new releases that ISN'T Top 40 material makes it hard for me to do that anymore.

Oh and vudu thanks for the heads up, i just got into the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and had no idea they had a new album out. I gotta give it a listen, the new Depeche Mode was dissapointing and I need a new music fix.

Spinnzilla, et al - Ever see the "hand dance" to Harder Better Faster Stronger?

OH MAN YOU HAVE TO SEE IT :D (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2cYWfq--Nw)

Insanolord, try out Indigenous. They're a native american blues band, from (I think) South Dakota. Got a mean guitar player, they do.

I've been meaning to bump this with a new post for a while now, but a google search was fruitless. I had to hunt this down the old fashion way, and since I did my rounds in the forum extra early today, figured now is the best time to do this.

^Weezer 8-bit tribute album!

I read about this a few months back on gonintendo but didn't get around to downloading this album until just a few weeks before the Weezer/Blink182 show I attended. I'm a sucker for chiptune style music, and not having listened to Weezer in some time, I was very excited to hear this album and frankly it didn't dissapoint!

All the tracks are remixed by various artist, and while the majority of the tracks are enjoyable, I find myself doing what I always do when it comes to Weezer; Listen to the Blue albums material almost exclusively. Then again, "Why Bother" has a really good version of it so that gets a lot of plays as well. It's pretty much a straight up cover that stays true to the original, with some 8-bit noises in the background (mainly heard in the intro).

Definately recommended for fans of Weezer, but it might be worth it to check out if you just like chiptunes in general

FYI: The version of Buddy Holly on here is completely isntrumental, and sounds a bit like a techno/industrial remix of the Tetris theme, but maybe thats just me. It's really good though!

This album came out in Aug. '08 and somehow its taken me this long to add it to this thread. When the album first came out, it was so different for what the band has done prior (their previous album before this was different too but this is new one is something else entirely) that it took a long time to get in to. Over time though, it's grown on me and I feel confident saying this will be one of my all time favorite albums.

Starting off as an indie guitar-rock band from the UK, Bloc Party have grown significantly from and their roots. Ironically though, their sound now is more in line with the seeds that grew those roots, with songs that sound like their influences would in modern day. (Influences range from the The Cure to Joy Division to The Clash to Radiohead)

Some tracks are still heavy on the guitar riffs (with some of the heaviest sounds theyve produced) while others are big on the electric side of things, from drums to synth. You've got your loud, energetic tracks, to dancey sounding ones, as well as your slow and deep ones. This album is good from start to finish, and thats that.

Favorite tracks:

Mercury, Talons, Biko, and the most epic song on the album; Zephyrus. Definately check 'em out.

^Weezer 8-bit tribute album!

That entire album is horrible except the totally awesome rendition of El Scorcho.

Datarock, the band NWR recently interviewed has a new album.  Its fantastic, and CHEAP! (http://www.amazon.com/Red/dp/B0029PWSLS/ref=dm_ap_alb1/178-1834076-4364555).  Here's one great track dedicated to the one, the lovely, Molly Ringwald  --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUlSb4qxgAI

I listened to a few of the 8-bit Weezer tracks a while ago, and I agree they're mostly horrible. Most of them are a little too detailed to be something you'd hear on the NES or GameBoy, especially any of them with lyrics. I didn't see the post about the Seether Careless Whispers cover. I think it's a fucking great cover, it's so fresh that it almost sounds like a brand new (rock) song, written in the 2000s instead of the 80s.

Still haven't checked out that cover, I gotta get on that..

With the tribute album, I guess I'll just say "to each his own". I don't mind that its "too detailed" or anything, because I'm not expecting it to actually come out of an NES or GB, I simply just like the style. Even MegaMan 9 had a more advanced soundtrack than any of the original NES games but I still love it because it recreated the style.
