Title: I need your help finding the scariest movies possible! Immediately!
Post by: that Baby guy on August 05, 2007, 06:39:24 PM
I have a friend who just lost her father, and she really wants to check out some incredible terrifying movies. I've been trying to help her think of some, but we've had no luck. Does anyone have any not-so-common suggestions?

Wait......she just lost her father, and now she wants to see some scary movies?
How does that make sense?
Well, I haven't seen a good scary movie in a long time. Almost all the new ones released these days sucked. I tend to find that asian horror flicks are scarier in everyway. For instance, the 3 Extremes is a good movie (the second extreme is my favorite, followed by the first). It's not exactly scary as it is intense.
Then there's Kairo, which I have yet to watch but have heard it's creepy as sh!t. Also there's Audition and the Ringu series.
That's all I got for now. I hope that helps.

I'm sorry about your friends father.
I'm no good with scary movies sadly, you could always go for the Super Mario Bros. Movie. That's scary in it's own right.

Lol. She says she decided to look tomorrow at Blockbuster. Essentially, a year ago, he was given six months to live, from a brain tumor. This girl likes to distract herself as much as possible when painful things happen, so she usually watches scary movies then. Talking to her today, which is about five days afterwards, and the day after the funeral, she says that nothing has really been scary enough, but that doesn't surprise me, given the situation.
Anyways, Kashogi, I'll link her to those things and that might help out. She has very peculiar and fickle tastes, so she might not go for anything, but I appreciate the help. Thanks, guys.

When a Stranger Calls Back a cheap sequel to a film that was recently remade. But man, Girls are really creeped out by it. Somehow this movie just presses the buttons of a girl's fears and anxieties.

Sorry to hear about your friend.
I don't really find movies terribly scary, so I am pretty much naming movies that creeped the hell out of me. David Lynch's Eraserhead is an oldie but a goodie. High Tension is another I would recommend, it's French I think. I could name more, but I'm not really sure it's what you're looking for.

Be warned: It is a pretty twisted movie. "It is not an easy movie to watch but as an examination of what people are capable and how violence can come from nowhere and from the unexpected its a masterpiece."

I think 'scary' means different things to different people.
For me, blood and gore does not equate to 'scary'. Alien and Aliens rates pretty high as scary, but because of atmosphere and tension. I also find some tense moments in Event Horizon, though most critics write it off as mediocre sci-fi. Hideaway with Jeff Goldblum and Alicia Silverstone is a little freaky. Speaking of Jeff Goldblum, The Fly is a creepy, gross, scary kind of movie. Then again, I find moments of all of the Jurassic Park movies a bit intense (but not 'scary').
Yeah, I like my movies mainstream. So what?

It's not a horror film, but Zodiac is pretty intense at times. I just saw it last night and really enjoyed it.

I think Night of the Living Dead is pretty terrifiying.
Some of Peter Jackson's early horror-comedies might be worth a try. Dead-Alive is so disgusting I had to turn it off after 20 minutes. And The Frighteners has some intense scenes.

Of the films listed here the only one I've seen is Zodiac but that isn't really very scary. There are like four scenes that are freaky in the whole film. Now they're intense scenes but a really scary movie is one that keeps you up at night and Zodiac didn't do that for me. Still a good film worth seeing but not to be scared.
Now I don't like being scared so I don't watch scary movies but I've heard that the Wicker Man, the original, not the Nicholas Cage film, is one of the scariest films ever made. It topped some list I saw on a website years ago.

The only movie that ever managed to scare me was Nightmare on Elm Street, but that was back when I was much, much younger. I think I was between 10-12 at the time. But I doubt that would scare anyone anymore, so sorry I can't really be of any use.

Tremors for me. I couldn't find a way it couldn't get me at the age and house situation.
