Title: The officially un-official "What game should I get" Thread
Post by: Stogi on July 26, 2007, 08:35:56 AM
I just thought I'd let you guys know I found a Wii!

*Applause/cheering*

I stopped by Wal-mart on my way home from work to refill my water jugs and also get some rotisserie chicken (mmm....rotisserie). I decided I might as well see if they got any Wii's in stock, even though they probably don't. To my surprise they had 1 left...........behind the counter, hiding. I barely spotted the damn thing.

The funny thing is I gave up looking for it the day before and would just check if I happened to be in a store that sold them.

I'll write a first impression/opinion of the Wii in a bit, but right now I am in the market for a game. I already bought Wii play, seeing how it comes with a controller. And I purchased a second nunchuck controller.

I want to know what games you might recommend I play. I would like something multi-player so I can play with my brother (who LOVES wiisports/play), but I won't turn down suggestions for a deep single-player games either (like trauma center).

Anyway, thanks for your help in advance.

P.S. I am not connected to the internet. I will be in the next couple of weeks, and I'll post my Wii code.

You know what I meant. Don't be a prick.

And isn't far-cry the game that Kairon likes..........

Also Mashiro, I have already played and beaten both Zelda and RE4. As cool as the controls might be, I don't think I would be interested in buying them (seeing how I already own them).

Then again, isn't RE4 going at a discounted price? Does anybody know that price?

What's your brother's taste in games?

For the old school arcade aficionado, Metal Slug Anthology has 7 official Metal Slug Games games and unlimited continues and is a beautiful time waster.

Trauma Center can be multiplayer if one of you is willing to play "Nurse" and hold the nunchuck.

Alien Syndrome is great for Gauntlet fans if you can get past the PSP graphics and get right into the 4-player co-op multiplayer and huge levels.

I'm a prick; deal with it.

RE4 retails for $30.  It's worth playing again, especially for the extras that weren't in the original GCN version.  If you were good at the game the first time around, do yourself a favor and download a completed save file for the Wii version so you can jump right into Professional Mode.

Skip Zelda if you played it on GC (Controls don't make that much of a difference on the Wii version) but as Vudu said RE4 is worth playing again with the new controls.

And yeah it's only 30 bucks =) every sale also helps in making Capcom realize RE5 should be on Wii! I hope >.<

I would say that Tony Hawks Downhill Jam is a great multiplayer game. I have it and love it. It's pretty easy, but a great game to play with other people, cause if they don't know what they're doing, you can pretty much own them.

I have two good single player games to suggest. Spiderman 3 is a fun game. It gets really difficult at times, but I love it, and it can be fun just to swing around doing sub-missiony tasks. For an easier single player game, I would suggest the Transformers game. Like I said in the Transformers thread, the camera control is a little hard to get used to, but you can fiddle with it in the settings. Once you to master the camera control though, it's a great game. A lot of the missions can be difficult, but with a few tries, you can take them down. Like Spiderman 3, it can be fun to just drive (or fly) around to get to the sub-missions, or just for the heck of it. I spend a lot of time practicing in the sub-missions when I can't beat a mission.

All three of these games, I would say, definitely try. They are all great games.

Hope I helped.

I... I have TH downhill Jam and just didn't understand it at all when I played it. Maybe I'm just not a Tony Hawk gamer though.

RE4 is worth playing again especially at the price with the extras. Zelda would only be good if you didn't already play it.

For multiplayer, I'd recommend renting Rayman Raving Rabbids and/or WarioWare. I'd say buy 'em if they were $20, but they're $50.

RE4
Zelda
Mario Strikers (next week)

How is SSx? anyone get that?

Maybe Alien syndrome if you like smash tv games and bad graphics (i gotto try this game)

Either GOdfather OR Scarface if you like GTA games... Seems godfather is the better of the two by a point or so (i havent tried either)

Cooking mama, wario ware and brain age are fun for a few days

Thats ALL id suggest for now if even. great games are on the horizon though. (check out my post on the best games of 07, ull get a variety of good things to come)

I gotto add vudu and mashiro to my wii, when i get home tomorrow ima send you guys my wii number...will you be my friends?

Okay, I guess I have to contradict some people now that Pale's forced me to commit AGAINST some titles.

I would NOT suggest RRR for multiplayer. It's a neat concept alright, but has some issues that come with it since it's a launch title: some minigames are rather shallow, the game relies mostly on its charm, not all games are multiplayer, AND if you want to play the minigames outside of story mode... you've got to navigate through a TON of menues just to go from one game to another, if you can even find the game you're looking for since the game forces you to go to different menus of different jigsaw puzzles with only the game title to remind you what it was about. It's basically menu hell, that game's party mode.

I also really didn't "get" Tony Hawk Downhill Jam. It's basically the most disappointing Wii game I own... but perhaps I've never understood the Tony Hawk games? Either way, it isn't a Tony Hawk game, it's an SSX clone... and you might as well get SSX Blur if that's what you want...

Now to end on a positive note!

For single player games, you've got the improved-by-mere-use-of-the-wiimote ports Godfather and Scarface (which were already decent games before the Wii treatment, I believe). Super Paper Mario is an interesting platformer-with-hit-points rendition of the Paper Mario series, and must have a little bit of magic, considering my roommate borrowed it from a friend and proceeded to beat it in a matter of days. (that reminds me, I have to get my copy of godfather back...). If you're an old-school/arcade gamer who wouldn't mind some "you're not allowed to get hit" or "collect X rings" challenges, then the loose-and-fast Sonic and The Secret of the Rings is there, just acknowledge some slight losseness in tilt sensing from the wiimote.

Oh... but are you gonna be asking for VC recommendations too so that when you do get connected, you can be ready?

Naaa....There are only a few select games for the VC that I would actually buy (Super Mario, Super Metiod, Majora's Mask, Pilotwings, just to name a few). Plus, most of those games haven't been re-released yet.

Anyway, my brother bought RE4 for me today (mentioning how he needs to contribute to my $320 purchase) and I played it for a bit. It's still pretty fun and definitely still intense, I just hate the fact that I have to play it all over again on normal. If I had an SD card, I'd plug that sh!t into my laptop, download a save file, and be done with it; but I can't!

I rented Red Steel too (Funny how no one recommended it). My brother's having a blast playing it. To him, it is the "Rawest Game Ever." I've played it a little too, and I though I can see where all the negativity comes from, I am actually enjoying this game very much.  The controls are definitely not the best, but in a way, it is still very refreshing the only way shooting somebody in the face can be.

I was thinking of picking up Trauma Center since my brother is currently studying to be a surgeon, but I thought I'd just wait.

I appreciate your guys' help but I realized that even though the Wii has a nice selection of games, I am not interested in many of them and it's kind of disappointing. Then I look at what the PS3 and 360 have to offer and it's even more disappointing (though Fifa 2007 is the best soccer game I have ever played).

It makes me think "Why should I even bother?" Like, "Why should I pay for a console, when I'll only buy a couple games?" But then I go and play Wiisports and all disappointments fade away.

LOL. Your bro got you RE4 anyways and took the decision out of your hands!

Wow! And Red Steel! That was the one game I was telling myself NOT to recommend. It's not that it's not fun, per se, it's just that for some reason I can't stand replaying it. Here's hoping the sequel fulfills all the promises the first one made.

Yeah, the pickings are there for the Wii, but they are slim. This is par for the course at this time in a console's life though. Have you given any thoughts as to what Wii games you're gonna gun for this fall? Or is it time to start saving up in anticipation of an XBox 360 price drop? Or do you just not have enough time anyways?

Yes. No, there's only one game I would buy for it, and the next iteration is being made for the Wii with Mii's! (Fifa 08). Sorta.

Like I said, I'll probably pick up the new Trauma Center. I'm definitely going to pick up Prime next month. Brawl and Forever Blue (I like this name better) are next up on my list. Forever Blue seems like the perfect way to unwind after a stressful day. I don't know if I'll pick up Galaxy right away. I'll probably bee to busy with school and other games to play it.

And Mashiro, don't worry. I'm not discourage, just disappointed.

No one's mentioned Excite Truck?  That's the only Wii game that I've played that I'd recommend.  I thought Super Paper Mario was boring and stopped playing it, and I like the 'Cube version of Zelda better than the Wii version.  Red Steel's okay, but renting it instead of buying it was probably a good choice.

Okay, mysticspike is now a confirmed dupe account.  Before there was the remote possibility that he was just a moron.  That possibility has ended.

The best part is the first time I read this post I thought it was Shift Key just being a jerk and recommending horrible games.  About three minutes later I did a double take and went back and discovered my error.  I laughed.

Damn you, vudu, why must you steal my thoughts? As soon as you quoted Spike and I read your sentence about him being a dupe, I remembered how I thought it was Shifty who posted that since he has the same Metroid avatar. I have Quick Reply at the bottom, so I started to write how I was fooled, and how I did a double take too.

Then I glanced back at your post and the paragraph below, and discovered that you had written nearly exactly what I was about to.

Honestly, I don't really play my Wii all that much, but there is a nice in house competition going on in WiiPlay.
Shooting Gallery: 725
Tanks: 84
Table Tennis: 124
Laser Hockey: 11

I can't remember the rest, but I hold the record in all shown except for Laser hockey where I am tied for 1st.

Great Multiplayer/competitive play.

Oh I see.....My mistake.

I been playing that and WiiSports for about three hours a day now (Golf is quickly becoming my new favorite after Tennis; it's just so damn hard sometimes). It's great because my brother (a non-gamer) is actually very good at these types of games and makes it incredibly fun/intense.

I own tennis, and the only way thecomputer can beat me is if I let them so that they stop cheating. (they start to do that alot once you get above 2000)

Golf was very challenging, but since no one challenged me at golf, I never played it that much.

Right now Target Practice and Tanks are the main games to beat, but laser hockey and table tennis are and distant 3rd and 4th. Most of the other games get ignored, almost as if they didn't exist.

But I did start a WiiPlay Hi Score Thread, so post your scores there and maybe we'll be motivated to challenge the scores (since Nintendo couldn't include a simple online Leaderboard)

i'd recommend it but it isnt a MUST HAVE title or anything. it was my favorite of all the launch titles excluding zelda and i played it at work every chance i got. i even entered an Excite Truck Tournement after i got laid off from that job (got cheated, i should of been in the finals..).

Its great if you like arcade racers but if you plan on playing it against someone, it loses its charm. the game must of been rushed because its only 2 players and you dont even have Com controlled racers. thats just sad its almost impossible to get ahead if you fall behind unless your opponent crashes into every wall they see, but if that were the case you would of never fallen behind in the first place.

i never got a chance to upload mp3s from an SD card but im sure if you're able to do so and upload some of your favorite tunes you'd be able to enjoy this game even more as something you play just for fun. Dont get me wrong the single player races can get intense on the harder courses since you're not only trying to come in first but trying to compete for stars, but i found it much more pleasurable to just race and not worry about winning too much. Its such a fun game, and its a blast when you get a big enough jump to perform a 1080 truck spin. Sadly thats the only trick you can pull off, but it is rewarding when you perform more rotations on the smaller jumps. I noticed the CPUs hardly ever run into the terrain altering icons so the changing of the landscape becomes more of a strategy for You to get ahead, as opposed to making it more challenging for you. (Truck thros ftw!)

if you're into arcade racers, and want a game to unwind with, i'd suggest it.
if you're looking for a competitve multiplayer experience, i'd say pass on this one

WarioWare ruined Shooting Gallery in Wii Play for me with Can Shooter. Can Shooter (unlockable game you get after getting to a certain point in single player, which is great to) is the old school light gun game I wanted Shooting Gallery to be. Simple mechanics, excellent controls, and brutally unforgiving difficulty; now that's what I'm talking about.

Don't buy Rayman for multiplayer, it's not designed for that. Single player is fun for a while, but multi's not very good; the sequel scheduled to release later this year is supposed to be much more multiplayer-oriented.

Super Paper Mario is excellent, great mix of platforming and puzzle solving, just make sure you are able to think in three dimensions. I missed RE4 the first time around, but the Wii version is spectacular, and after playing it I don't think I could play it (or a similar game) using an analog stick to aim. RE4 Wii Edition has ruined 3rd-person action games using dual analog for me in the same way Metroid Prime 3 will do a month from now for first-person shooters. I am currently loving Alien Syndrome, but I suppose we should leave discussion of that in its own topic.

If you want a great multiplayer game, wait 3 days and get Mario Strikers, the first proper Wii online game. Also, on the VC, Mario Kart 64 and Bomberman 93 are excellent multiplayer games. And I've had my Wii since launch and every multiplayer outing always comes back to Wii Sports. That thing has incredible lasting power, especially in multiplayer.

The best part of Excite Truck is that you don't have to necessarily win the race time wise to win the race.  You can do it trick base.  I also had a blast with the multiplayer because I could get my wife to play it and she could actually win because it was star based.

SPP is a good game to rent I wouldn't buy.  I came into my rental of it thinking I would keep it but went out having to will myself to beat it.  Its to slow.  Its an RPG with Platforming elements.  Not a Platformer with RPG elements if that makes sense.  Which is what really kills it.

Rayman has its moments but the promised storyline we were suppose to get according to Ubisoft before it launched, it even had concept art, wasn't in their and the game really really suffer because of it.

Trauma Center:  I think you said you are getting this one.  Good choice.  Though the missions past where the DS ones stopped the story is sort of interesting but the gameplay isn't anything new which makes it a little boring for this particular type of games.  Though the other doctor missions are good as well.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance:  Another one of those that I wouldn't buy par se because I think the Wiimote controls for this style of game isn't as good as buttons would be.  Plus the other platforms have better graphics for this.  So if you don't have a PS3/360 I give this game at least a rent because its a fun romp especially if you are a fan.

Metal Slug Anthology: Avoid it.

Super Monkey Ball:  Is good once you adjust to the controls and start holding it like a pen. Though every world has at least 1 level that must have been made by the stupid level designer, and if I ever find him he better watch out.

Pangya:  Totally Borked Multiplayer mode.  Single Player is good especially once you figure out if you are a swing or button person, I'm button.  It can be pretty fun and frustrating at the same time.

RE4:  Wii Aiming was the best addition ever made to the series.  Good game.

Sonic and the Secret Rings:  This game is really whether it clicks or not.  At first I was frustrated with the game then I stopped playing for a day and came back and everything just clicked.  The upgrade system was a stroke of genius and I hope they make a sequel.  I would definitely give this one at least a rent.  If you are good you can probably beat it in that time.  Though if you want perfection it will take much longer.

Elebits:  I love everything about it but the Gameplay.  So I can't recommend it but, it makes me very much interested in Dewy's adventure because its gameplay seems more up my alley.

Rampage:  Unfortunately the controls weren't that great.  I think that series should just stay on a 2D plane.

Theirs my mini opinion on those games.  Some I left out because they are duh or you have them, TP WiiPlay WiiSports, use them as you will.

The previous Paper Marios were RPGs with platforming elements, Super Paper Mario is nearly all platformer, just not a very fast moving one. I really enjoyed the way the game was set up in that most of the major obstacles were puzzles that required the use of the different pixls and dimension switching. The game is relatively easy, but worth playing through at least once if only for the brilliant writing. The Paper Mario series is a perfect example of how the Treehouse team that translates Nintendo's games from Japanese to English has gone from good to great to amazing to the best frakking translations ever. Very few games manage to get genuinely funny, and I don't think anything is anywhere close to the writing in this game. Really funny throughout, with certain parts that are just insanely funny. Anything with Bowser is great, especially a couple of the lines when you first get to him, and anyone familiar with game forums will appreciate Francis' level.

And I would advise against Super Monkey Ball and instead point you toward Kororinpa: Marble Mania. I bought Monkey Ball at launch, having absolutely loved the first two on the 'Cube, and was severely disappointed. Of the 13 Wii games I've purchased so far Monkey Ball is the only one I traded in. But then I got Kororinpa. It's a relatively simple presentation with outstanding controls and the kind of deceptively simple looking levels that were often insanely frustrating, but in a way that you knew the only thing you had to blame was yourself that made me love the original Super Monkey Balls. The only thing missing is Kororinpa Target

The only translation team that can compare to Treehouse is Capcom's Phoenix Wright team.. Treehouse is still better though ( Bill Trinen)..
