Title: Kotaku: Reggie Taunts Us With September Wii Surprise **Smash Online Hint!!**
Post by: Mashiro on July 24, 2007, 02:00:09 PM
Ohhhh! SOMETHING is coming at the end of september for Wii Connect 24!

Not only that, but look to the end of the interview:

Interviewer: Maybe one day I'll play against you from you in Seattle and me in LA, head to head online.

Reggie: Absolutely. Maybe a game coming soon. *Massive smile on Reggie's face*

Interviewer: Like..?

Reggie: *smiling makes a semi-shruging gesture*

Interviewer: Not for this year right?

Reggie: *smiling still and semi-shrugs again* We'll talk about that next time.

Interviewer: There could be something coming this year? Maybe Super Smash Brothers?

Reggie: You never know.

Interviewer: Thats online right.

Reggie: *head tilted with a big smile*

Interviewer: There's that knowing smile.

Reggie also owns the interviewer in the Wii Fit soccer game.

Damn interviewer is trying to sink Nintendos Wii ship by getting peoples hopes up (obviously Reggie can't deny it), to set up a storm of hate when it's announced there's no online, everyone will hate Wii and PS3 will stage a comeback. I can already see the media headlines of broken Nintendo promises, how  they lie to consumers and why they are the next evil. I wonder how much Sony paid this interviewer?

As long as it's not anything that has to do with Miis or online polls, it'll be good.

I'm sorry, but given some of the events lately, I put Reggie's credibility a smidge higher that Casamamsasmkasmasmima's.

I'm really more of a "it has to be right the f*ck in my face for me to believe it" person this time around.

Which is to say, I'm just like your mom.

The sequence of events has been this:
1) Sequel to Smash announced as launch title
2) Sequel announced to be online also
3) Time passes, formally titled Brawl, revealed at E3 2006
4) More time passes
5) More time passes
6) Profit
7) More time passes
8) Website goes up
9) No one has said anything about online lately, including Reggie, Sakurai, and the rest of Nintendo

It's really, really difficult to ignore the silence on this matter.  I see it from a simple standpoint, which is that if it were online, they'd be hyping the hell out of it.

They aren't.

That is bad juju and a bad premonition.

There isn't absolute silence, Sakurai has said they are working on it but it has its problems, which means nothing of course but it isn't exactly silence.

That could be worse, knowing Nintendo's track record, which tends to usually boil down to something like "we tried to make it online, but it was going to delay the game and was proving too difficult, so we tried to focus on making it the best single player and local multiplayer game we could."

Which is kind of like saying "we tried to make you brownies, but the store was 5 minutes away and we were out of eggs, so instead we just thought about how awesome they'd be instead."

Actually that just isn't true. Reggie has made it indirectly clear that he is holding something back about online and SSBB. He hinted at it during part 1 of 3 in an exclusive interview w/ Steven Totillo from MTVnews.com on his mtv blogpost. I don't have a link, but the interview took place during E3 and the hints were just as strong as the ones quoted in this thread.

edit: Here is the link, remember though, its not about what Reggie says during a dodge, its how he dodges that should be payed attention to.

The best thing about Bond for me was the verbal exchange of emotions from each participating player. If there is no verbal exchange, then I might as well not play. (Seriously, there is no way LTK with throwing knives could be the same online)

Wow this interviewer is really ignorant.  He could be playing Reggie online this month with Super Mario Strikers, so Reggie could have been smiling at the interviewers complete lack of faith in Nintendo and lack of homework on software.

Like can we play you Reggie online soon?

"Yeah dumbass, you can play me this month in Strikers, or later this year in Battalion Wars 2, or Medal of Honor Heroes with 30 other people, or Dragon Ball Z 3, or Madden, or FIFA.  There will be tons of games you will be able to play me online coming from Nintendo and 3rd parties, so get your doubting head out of your ass...and don't worry about Brawl so much.  It is coming along well."

There is that knowing Smile of your Reggie.

Here's my 2 cents about Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  It was announced as a launch title and that it will be online long before Nintendo displayed any games for the Wii.  The hardware wasn't even finalized.  Wouldn't you think that Iwata's juice at Nintendo, being the head honcho and all, would allow for hardware that took Super Smash Bros. Brawl online?  If I'm the president of NCL, I'd make that happen.  1 out of 2 promises is better than batting 0 for 2.

This game will be online...and I predict some voice chat with it.  Shoot, if the DS can do it...why not its bigger and (hopefully) more powerful brother...the Wii.

As for this September Surpise, I hope it is a full Wii firmware upgrade.

We know that a new channel is coming available soon...and Nintendo has tied the release of firmware updates with the release of a new channel.

This is what irritates the hell out of me.

If they're working on SSBB's online mode but they're not certain if it's going to work, then they should damn well say "We're trying to get it to work but we're as of yet uncertain."

HONESTY, FFS! Just be honest with your customer base and I'd wager they'll not only respect you more for it but they also won't blow it so out of proportion if the game turns out to NOT have online play.

The real problem with Nintendo's PR has always been that, if you say nothing, people draw their own incorrect conclusions anyway so you're better off stomping out this sort of thing BEFORE it becomes a problem and people start blaming you for "broken promises".

I know, but Reggie should be saying it right now.

I understand when Nintendo allows speculation to run wild with hardware because they can't reveal what they're working on for fear of it being ripped-off, but in the case of SSBB being online or not, what do they have to lose giving actual news on the subject? It's not like Sony will sweep in with a SSB clone with online play if they announce it for SSBB.

This thread is ironclad proof of the damage speculation can do. Reggie didn't say anything regarding SSBB online play and yet that's the conclusion everyone is drawing because he refused to comment.

"My plan is to include Wi-Fi connection compatibility and online functionality. One of the primary reasons Super Smash Bros. Brawl was created was that Nintendo, when taking Wii online, wanted to have Smash Bros. to do that," added Sakurai.

They're working on it. Nintendo wants it online. Sakurai wants it online. Everyone who likes Smash wants it online.

They keep hinting that it's coming, they don't seem down about it when asked about it being online.

At this point it's safe to say it'll be online.

IF they stay quiet about it AFTER the TGS THEN I'd start worrying.

Nintendo will say that their is online play.  When it comes the online play will  be SSBB themed online Go Fish!.  Fans will be outraged.  To placate the extremist Nintendo will send them an airplane ticket.  Upon arrival to the airport the player is not told where they will be going.  Nintendo will have set up places around the world with random players.  Once there they will play Smash together and Nintendo will claim this is better then online because they can interact.  They will then be Brainwashed in their sleeps to become a better Zealot for the Wii Collective.  When the revolution come the Washed will be the Vangaurd.

Are you talking about any form of online, such as "send your trophies to friends!," or at least one version of fighting online?  Even if it were just 1v1, that still counts as a proper online outlet in my opinion.  The former does not.

Online is what going to decide whether I get the game or not.

As much as I enjoy SSB I only play it when I come to visit cap and SB. I don't have that many gamer friends, much less Nintendo fanatics, around, so once I am done unlocking stuff I am done. In fact, I gave both the original SSB and Melee away because they die once I am through with them. I sold Melee back and the original SSB I gave to SB as a present (he loves it FAR MORE than I ever did).

If Brawl has online at least I can challenge people and play with far away friends, extending the replay value.

Actually no Nintendo should be saying we are trying to do this...but may not succeed.

If it just so happens that Nintendo fails, then it is a huge blemish on its system that is a public relations nightmare.

Why couldn't you get it to work?  Perhaps the Wii truly is technologically inferior to the other systems...it can't even do online gaming.

Specially when Xbox 360 is releasing online fighting games on its system...sure they are not as complex as Brawl, but that doesn't matter.  That is too hard to describe.

Nintendo should keep quiet until it can announce something certain...and if they can not implement...don't say anything and focus on the greater elements of the game.

look at what happened to Metroid: retro said in a few different interviews that they weren't interested or working on online multiplayer for Corruption but people still went on believing they'd get it until they flat out said “NO there will be no online multiplayer”.

i still no people who haven't heard the news and are waiting for online death matches next month

Ok, I'll take the bet that there is no online component such that it is considered - and agreed upon - as a true online component in the spirit of Smash Bros.  That is to say, if we get some crap like exchanging trophies or other mini game nonsense, that doesn't count, which means I'm not going by absolutely any online component.  (Fun note: When MP3 was confirmed as not online, there were arguments at CAG, with someone saying "Retro said there would be online in a way we didn't expect," to which I replied with "Yeah, no-online is a way I'd certainly not expect it to be done."  I bring this up because let's not get that far into dumb semantics on something so silly and for fun. :P )

At the very least, for me to lose the bet, there has to be some form of the core of Smash online - I'll even let 1v1 matches be considered enough.  Anything above that is icing, but at the very least we need to be able to fight other people online.  I'll even be generous and say that if it's limited to X characters and X stages, that still constitutes the fighting online, so you'd win the bet.  Basically, given the comments in the past, this should be pretty easy for me to lose.

If I lose, I owe KashogiStogi $10 (20 is too rich!) to be paid through his method of choice - Paypal, Money Order, etc.  I also must get an avatar (which is fine) due to vudu's acceptance of bet.

If I win, Kashogi owes me $10, and vudu has to...mmm.  I dunno, I could use suggestions.

Savvy?

P.S. Ian still doesn't have a Wii?  :p I thought he was going to pick them up in the bargain bin for twenty bucks by now!

I will throw my two cents in  (again)

Reggie said it was Wii24connect specific.

That is the only fact we know...so I doubt it will be hardware related.  Although, it could have hardware implications.

I believe this is going to be a firmware update.  A very big and important firmware update, that will do several things for the Wii owner.

No It will not magically turn the system into a cool Xbox 360...

But it will allow SD Cards play Virtual Console games on your Wii, and it will allow game saves to be accessed from the SD Cards.

Now, I am speculating here, but I predict that a Wii upgrade will be coming soon that allows Gamecube Games to be played with the Wii Classic Controller, and that it is only a matter of time for that fix to be created.  Reason I believe this:  Nintendo isn't creating new Gamecube Controllers yet still promotes Gamecube backwards compatibility.

Finally the firmware update will come with the new Mii channel talked about at E3.  That is a given.

If I win, Kashogi owes me $10, and vudu has to...mmm.  I dunno, I could use suggestions.

Savvy?

What if there's 1 v 1 online, but not in the conventional sense? For example, coop or other things of that nature? Does that still count?

Otherwise, you on mate!

Good question.  Hmmm.

Mostly I don't want to turn this into some dumb legalese sort of debate, where there's a thousand different ways to interpret the wording of my post and then use that for/against various parties.  I just want to see it as a "common sense" sort of thing were if the majority of people consider the product to have a proper fighting component online, then I lose the bet.

I guess what I'm saying is that there needs to be at least some way you fight another person competitively online.  Not like...you fight the comp and then they fight the comp and the person who got the most kills in 2 minutes wins.  This needs to be you trying to knock someone out in true Smash Bros form proper.

I dunno if this makes sense.  If there's coop 2 humans v 2 comps...I mean that's close and all, but it's still not letting me fight my buddy online.

Any more clear?

So PvP, Main Game only?  That pretty much sums it up?

I believe that Smash Bros. Brawl will be online with at least 1 vs. 1 humans with all/most items enabled  100% going to happen.

I am not so sure about 4 player verse mode...but I am willing to bet that is 100% possible with limited items.  I am thinking Assist Trophies and Pokemon may be out, but guns, health, melee weapons, ect will be in the online version.

Also I can see trophy trading, and potentially the ability to unlock secret characters that your friends have on their Wii systems.
