Title: I need suggestions (about getting an XBOX 360)
Post by: NWR_pap64 on July 18, 2007, 08:30:53 AM
I've been thinking of getting a 360 for a while now, but never had the money to do so, until today. I went to Gamestop and sold ALL of my old game collection (DS, GC, PS2 and GBA). I now have over 500 dollars worth of store credit, but than enough to get me a 360.

But before I do, I have some questions. What should I do?

- Buy an used Core system for 250 bucks and buy the HD separately

- Buy a brand new Core system and buy the HD separately

- Buy a Premium system

- Save the money for something else

On one hand, I don't want to hang onto all that credit and I must use it. Frankly, outside Galaxy and Brawl for the Wii I am not looking forward to anything else, so might as well buy it. On the other, I don't know if its a good idea to blow all the store credit on the 360 and games.

What should I do?

Will you be joining the Gold service on Live?

For me, the 360 is mainly for gaming online, like Gears and Halo2. Others prefer Rainbow 6 Vegas.

I recommend a sealed system, for sure. You never know what you'll get with a used one. And the Premium bundle is a better value than the core.

I say go for it.

I'd recommend a new premium (not elite) system.  With all the problems many 360s have, I wouldn't buy a used system just to save $50.  My assumption is that Microsoft's warranty only applies to the original owner, so even if the system you buy is less than a year old you'll have to pay for any repairs that may be needed in the future.  You might want to hold out a few months to see if Microsoft is going to drop the price, but it's a gamble.  Even if they do, it might be worth it to have the system sooner rather than later (depending on your interest in Wii games over the next couple months).

Well I would skip buying the core, it is a rip off to put it bluntly. You might as well buy the Premium which comes with other extras besides the HDD. Now I'm not sure if you have an HD TV or not, but if you do I do suggest you get the elite, if only because of the HDMI port, but if you don't I say stick with the premium. Now in terms of games, I would have to know what genres you like and I can give you some recommendations.

In regards to the used system, like Vudu suggested you are better off paying a little extra. Now I believe the warranty still applies even to new owners, because I sold a 360 to a friend of mine which died in 4 months and MS still repaired it. Still though I think you are better off to get a brand spanking new 360 with a full 3 year warranty.

Thinking this further, I don't know if I really want to burn all my store credit in the 360.

That money was gotten by killing of ALL of my game collection. I never had that type of money before so I might as well invest it on something wise. Originally since I thought I was just going to get like 200 or 300 dollars I was going to spend it on some Wii games and accessories and maybe get some older games I always wanted to play but never got around to.

So when I heard that I had over 500 dollars I was shocked. I didn't realize till much later than I could buy a 360 and games with it.

So while the idea is tempting, I think I will hold it off for a while and instead focus on smaller stuff.

As for game suggestions, Golden, I already had my eyes on both DoA games (I love the series and fighters), Dead Rising, Overlord, Viva Pinata and even Halo 3.

Hold off buying one until stores get the new model of 360 which aren't defective like the current 360s if you can. If you cant then make sure to save you receipt and save it well, photo copy it, and it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to video tape your purchase of the 360 if it break...

Yeah, to tell you the truth, I would wait a couple of months before picking up an XBox 360, in light of the big admission by Microsoft. Until you have explicit proof that their latest hardware revisions have fixed the problem, I wouldn't buy just yet.

That is so true, they screw you big time when you trade games in.

I am actually satisfied with my decision and don't feel screwed over. They had the additional 20% trade in bonus offer along with the More card bonus, so that helped raise the final tally a lot (especially since many of them were worth 1 to 3 dollars).

Plus the games were gathering dust. I rather trade them for new games than to have them kicking around.

So yeah, I am very happy with my decision.

Oh, you will.

I used to be the proud owner of Valkyrie Profile on PS1. Original cost was $20 used. Traded back for roughly $7. On ebay, it's now going for over $90. Don't get me started on what selling Ninja Gaiden Trilogy all those years ago has done to my soul.

It's amazing what widely available items you buy one day are considered rare the next. I can't even tell you how hard it was for me to get a hold of the model 2 SNES.... just because my mom wouldn't loan me $20 like 8-9 years ago (yeah, they were going for $20 at the very end at Toys R Us, it was a steal). Then, again, maybe you'll only ever care if you decide to collect videogames which I, unfortunately, decided to do not too long ago.

Well thank you for using your mind reading powers to deduct how I will feel about a personal decision in the not so distant future .

In all seriousness, I am well aware of the many trade in horror stories and how some gamers have been kicking themselves over their decision. But once again, I am truly happy and SATISFIED. I mean, I got 600 dollars which I can use to buy a brand new system or focus entirely of brand new Wii and DS games. I don't feel ripped off or feel any regrets towards my decision.

Once again, I appreciate the concern but there's no need to worry. Simply because some of you have been screwed over in the past it doesn't mean that I will feel the same way. I know that the 600 dollars could've easily been more than a thousand, but once again I don't feel any regrets/

Thats the secret to a happy life, isn't it? Take stock of the decisions you make and have no regrets about it. Maybe things could be different, but in the end, you made the decision that is leading you down the path you're on. Don't look back and imagine the possibilities of the future.

Mate, when you say "store credit" and "invest" in the same sentence then your priorities are horribly skewed.

Store credit sucks... I am not going to offer you any advice on one thing or the other, but I strongly advise whatever you do you do it ASAP.

I had store credit at Babages before they went out of business or were bought out or whatever unexpectedly, and I ended up losing my credit. Gamestop is probably not likely to suffer the same fate anytime soon, but you never know... and $500 in credit is a LOT to lose.

Besides that, the credit they give you is a joke anyway. You're better off selling your games on Ebay or something for hard CASH. Credit is just a bad idea, in my humble opinion.

You could get a ps3 if you have some interest in bluray but wait on the xbox for the new version.

I say just put down a preorder for all big Wii games coming between now and the end of the year as well as a vc store card.  I think you can pay for everything now if you really want so you could fully pay for Metroid, BWii, Mario, Smash, and any others you want while still leaving plenty for old ps2 games and the like.

Well to be fair, credit is a GOOD idea for the store.

Was that sarcasm or were you serious?

Sorry for questioning but sometimes I can't tell.

And Sixthangel, I was thinking of doing that. But Gamestop is not doing pre-orders for Galaxy or Brawl right now. That annoyed me like crazy because I would've pre-ordered those in a heartbeat.

They also offered me the chance to pre-order Metroid Prime 3, but I was never a fan of the Prime games so I don't know how MP 3 will turn out.

66 games, 2 of them DVD movies.

Again, I realize that I could've gotten a thousand out of it, but I am fine with it.

I mainly wanted to get rid of them, since I may move in December and don't want to lug everything with me.

Well, if you want to slap people around, start with Smash_Brother. He sold ALL of his gaming collection (and his collection was far bigger than mine) just to pay for the whole Wii package. And every little game he buys he later trades it in. So yeah, I suggest you start with him first...

In all seriousness, in the past I would've been very affectionate towards my collection. But SB made me realize that nearly all of the games were gathering dust, and that I played through them once and never bothered with them afterwards. So what's the point of keeping games when you can do something better with them?

But that's just me...

Yeah, this may be good 'ol F.U.D., but MS needs to do two things and soon: drop the price, and release their redesigned 65 nm X360. It would probably be smart to wait for one or the other of these thigns to occur before making your purchase...
Title: RE: I need suggestions (about getting an XBOX 360)
Post by: oohhboy on July 21, 2007, 11:07:19 PM
The 65nm chip isn't made from magic. Using a 65nm chip will not address the fundamental flaws in the system on a hardware level. With a lower heat output, it might lengthen a given box's life span, but problem still remains. The box is not remotely hardened against even the most careful of users, let alone an average one.
Title: RE:I need suggestions (about getting an XBOX 360)
Post by: Kairon on July 22, 2007, 01:22:09 AM
But in the anticipated hardware redesign that will come to accomodate the 65 nm chip's new (smaller) form factor, the hope is that they'll fix the essential design flaw that they initially had.

Yeah I realized that with my collection as well.  Thats one of the main reasons I joined Gamefly.  Though the ones I buy I do keep because of the whole collector thing and the memories attached.

I guess I'm going to have to beat around your whole Posse.  Well Smash is coming out so I'll wait till then.  That'll give me time to get a crew together.  Anyone want to be part of my crew?

Kairon:  In one of the other threads it was quoted that MS stated they will not do a true redesign until they go to 45nm which should be next year.  Which is ok by me I have my Wii and PS3.  I can wait because I know the Too Human probably won't be released before the revision.

BIG UPDATE!

Well, today I went to Gamestop, sold the rest of my collection and said "Screw this...". I caved in and bought an XBOX 360...

Love me, hate me, don't care. I bought everything used, including the HD (and thanks to the 10% discount I got it all for a bit cheaper). With it, I bought 6 games (5 360, 1 XBOX).

I got:
Dead Rising
Dead or alive 3
Dead or alive 4
Dead or alive xtreme 2
Viva Pinata
Chrome Hounds (my nephew got this one for himself)

As expected, this killed nearly all of my store credit (I got 54 bucks left), but I am very happy with my purchase so far.

Viva Pinata is a lot of fun, much better than I expected it to be. I was surprised to see a lot of movies at the Marketplace and right now I am downloading the F.E.A.R demo.

In my entertainment center I had to give it the top spot, mainly because I want it to have enough space for air in fear of overheating.

I put a 5 dollar deposit on Brawl, the reason I didn't pay it off is because I want to see if they confirm online for it. If it has, I'll fully pay it. If not, I'll move it to Galaxy.

Thanks for the ideas, opinions and suggestions, guys!

Though I admit that capamerica has me beat on that. I love the series, he ADORES it! As you can tell from his new icon, Ayane is his all time favorite character.

can't argue with personal tastes haha. I found DoA to be way to shallow of a fighting game to really go gaga over but that's just me. Not to say I didn't enjoy DoA2 for DC but yeah.

I would have avoided DOA3 and DOA4 (aren't they basically the same game anyway?)...and DOAX2. I didn't like Chromehounds at all either. Dead Rising was a good choice, I'd get Lost Planet too, I'm pretty sure it's cheap now. Guitar Hero 2 is also a must-have, even though GH3 will be out soon. Maybe you're better off waiting, or just buying the GH2 disc (used), as it *can* be played using a standard controller (shoulder buttons and A, analog controls the tremolo), though it's not very fun that way. There's literally no point in buying a game brand new if you can find it used, you'll save money, and if you trade it in later you'll get the same amount either way.

Anyone listened to the newest podcast?  There's a great quote in there.

Mike:  People aren't going to go drop $400 plus the game plus an Xbox Live account if they already have a Wii.  That's $500 plus right there as an entrance fee if you don't already have the system.  And that's not going to happen.  ... They're not going to get rid of every other game console they've ever owned because Halo 3 is coming out.

I thought of this thread and laughed.

You should pick up an Intercooler or the cool glowing stand if you have it verticle and worried about air flow.  I just got to the point I have extra fans on both my Wii and PS3.  (The Intercooler for the PS3 looks like it was meant to be on the system but when totally turned up sounds like a server room.  Lotsa fans.  I've got a cool picture of the stand for my Wii that helps with cooling.)

You'll have to tell me how the videos are.  I'm pretty interested in that aspect.
