Title: Most Embarrassing Gaming Moments
Post by: Mashiro on July 13, 2007, 12:56:51 PM
I'm sure all of us have some embarrassing gaming moments, so lets hear em!
For me it would have to be a single moment in A Link to the Past on SNES. I had gotten the game and got to the point where you see Agahnim teleport Zelda to the dark work.
Afterwards Agahnim shifts backwards behind a curtain where the fight ensues. However, as a kid (and I don't know why to this day) I thought he flew UP not backwards.
So I spent a very....very...very long time searching Hyrle for Agahnim. Fed up I gave up on the game. It wasn't until a year later that my best friend played the game and swiped the curtain to reveal the door to fight Agahnim. My jaw dropped and I felt really stupid as I had never even tried to slash away at curtains.
But hey on the plus side I finally got to finish the game and it became my favorite Zelda =)

Similar story.. my friend and I played LA in the car on the way to school for awhile, then he just gave me the game. So I was at the second (third?) dungeon for a year or two looking all over for the "nightmare key" (I didn't know that everything you need is in the dungeon.) It didn't help that there was that sleep thing in the middle of the village which confused me even more since you need a certain item to get in it.
Last day of 6th grade I asked another friend and he mentioned something about killing everything in a room. So I had to go to that one room and kill the bat, the spinny thing, and some wizard in a certain order to progress finally. It was a great day.

Here's a recent one...I fell into a trap in Phantom Hourglass...and then proceeded to fall into it again on the return trip...THEN I FELL IN IT AGAIN HEADING BACK UP! >=|
(Aha, everyone's had a Zelda one so far... )

Perhaps my most embarassing moment actually comes from Zelda as well... I had an insanely hard time in the beginning of Wind Waker swinging from the chandeliers in the time limit, even though I found the rest of the game to be nowhere near as hard as that... lol.

Mine is from TP. I spent over a hour trying to figure out how to solve the first puzzle as wolf link, breaking the wooden crate to get out of jail. I kept trying to break out using the vent near the top of the wall(like in the 3rd trailer) then trying to bash it with a dash or push/pull it. I ended up doing it by using Z+A to attack it but it took me another hour until I realized shaking the wiimote triggers wolf link's attack... (Didn't read the Instruction manual due to spoiler)

I consider Super Metroid my favorite game, but when I first played it, I couldn't for the life of me, figure out how to Space Jump. My neighbor's cousin had to teach me how to do it.
More Zelda:
It took me over a year to beat the final boss of Link's Awakening because I didn't know you could jump over his arms with Roc's feather. I finally beat it with half a heart by walking back and forth at the bottom of the screen. Greatest gaming triumph ever....... until like the first or second week of high school when a friend I met told me how to beat the boss.
Then, in Ocarina of Time, I was stuck in the Forest Temple for about a month because I missed the eye switch that untwists one of the hallways. F-ing lame.....

I had the exact same problem, I remember how amazed I was when I seen it actually done. In fact before I learned it I considered that area where you run into the friendly green creatures to be a trap that you couldn't get out of lol.

Not very serious but I don't remember anything more worthy: In Super Metroid not noticing the gap the ice beam was in and forever trying to jump that red shaft up with walljumps and other tricks. I occassionally lost my progress because my cart wasn't in the best condition and I thought you had to avoid the area until you get some other upgrade...
My memories of serious Zelda stucks weren't embarrassing because it seemed more like the fault of the game to me: 1. First dungeon of Link's Awakening, the first time you have to push one of those black blocks to open a door: How would I know that those things can be pushed? 2. Wind Waker: Couldn't proceed with the triforce collectathon because I couldn't find the kid behind the gravestone in the search quest and without that the teacher wouldn't give the necessary quests. 3. Ocarina of Time: I needed Gamefaqs to figure out those walls in the basement of the forest temple could be turned. But that game was so full of frustration anyway that I couldn't be bothered to continue playing it after I beat the forest temple.
Metroid also had its annoyances: 1. Super Metroid: Since I bought it used on a flea market (with a semi-broken battery, grrrr) it took me forever to figure out how to use the morph ball since I didn't notice that crouching is triggered by a tap instead of holding down. 2. Metroid Prime artifact collectathon: Two hints were translated wrong, usually the highlighted words are part of the room name but for two artifacts they weren't and instead pointed to other rooms. One was the lava area one that pointed at "seas of fire with two pillars in them" ("Feuerseen") but the seas of fire room was translated as lava seas and another room with two pillars and lava was called fire sea. The other was the artifact in the XRay visor room, the hint mentioned a "wet grove" ("feuchte Grotte") and there was a room named grove near the ship (with water in it, too) whereas the right room was called Garden of Life.

This one is also from Link's Awakening. Sorry the details are a bit vague.
I got through several dungeons and reached the Face Shrine dungeon, but got stuck on a particular room. On this map, it is the third panel in the first column. For months I did not know how to open that door, so I just gave up. Later, when I went to my grandparent's house for a few days, I decided to start over since I had forgotten all the things I had done before.
It turns out the door opened with bombs.

You know what MarioAllStar . . . I NEVER ever beat Links Awakening. And that is the very stage I got stuck on. I couldn't progress beyond the mini boss I couldn't figure out how the hell to get through the place.

You've got to beat it. It's one of the better Zelda games I've played. I love its whimsical nature. When you first see the Chain Chomp in the front yard, you know its going to be an interesting game.
Anyway, back to embarrassing stories...

Hmm, mine's from Zelda OoT, it was the pre Forest Temple quest to get the hookshot, I didn't know you could pull the graves around in the Kakariko Graveyard. I was stuck for easily 2 weeks just running round getting angry at Sheik.

have you never played ALttP???

My friend did the same Link to the Past goof that Mashiro did... except my friend was like 20. He had never played the game and bought it used. He phones one day telling me that the wizard just disappeared and he couldn't find him. I told him that finding him myself was very satisfying and that he should keep looking in the room Agahnim was last in. A week later he phones again. "Ian I've used every item in that room and sprayed magic powder everywhere and I still can't find him." "He's behind the curtain." "What?" "Just swipe at the curtain at the top of the screen with your sword." I hear that puzzle solved Zelda sound effect over the phone. Turns out he had played that game every day after work during that week. He had spent HOURS just farting around the room without figuring it out. I found that so shocking because I figured out he was behind the curtain instantly. It was the first thing I tried.
I do have an embarassing LttP story of my own as well. The first time I played it was at a friend's house. My friend had not gotten very far. All he had done was beaten the first castle area and rescued Zelda. I was really unfamiliar with games like Zelda. Everything I played before was all linear levels so exploring around was a lot of fun. I read all the signs and one of them was Link's wanted poster. Well I didn't recognize it as a Link and starting looking around the map to find the guy in the wanted poster. I figured finding him would get me a new item or something.

That's where a lot of this stuff comes from, I'll bet. Many things that are part of the Zelda paradigm aren't really explained, and you only really know what to do in some cases if you're familiar with past Zelda games.

Nah I never had it on my SNES, despite the fact that I owned and loved Link's Awakening. Weird I know. After OoT I went back and played the others, problem rectified.

Didn't you already get to push gravestones in the original LOZ?

I never personally owned a NES as a child because we didn't have a TV. I only had my Game Boy!

I'm pretty sure you push gravestones in Link's Awakening, too.

I didn't realize that I had to walk right up to the spiked balls that "Bowser" throws in Luigi's Mansion to pick them up. I tried sucking them up from a distance, and gave up and read a FAQ after wasting about two hours trying to beat him.

In Twilight Princess' Temple of Time I didn't know I could make the statues I controlled with the Dominion Rod attack by pressing the B button. I'm not sure if I missed the instructions telling me that or if I was just supposed to figure it out myself. I was trying to beat the game without ever resorting to an FAQ. I was stuck for about two hours before I finally gave up and looked up the answer online. I was pissed I had wasted so much time on something to stupid.

One of the top things for me was Zelda too: I went looking everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE for the Triforce in OoT.
I didn't get stuck in Twilight Princess, but I did make a boner mistake: I went all the way from the top of the Temple of Time to the bottom without a statue. I didn't think it was necessary. I had to climb back to the top and bring the guy down to continue. I don't much like that temple anyway.
Most embarrassing of all: I got stuck in RE4 for over a year. It wasn't a dumb mistake or anything like that, I just could NOT beat Krauser during the knife fight. Yeah, it's a cinema scene, but every time I played it I would miss the last quick button press. I revisited the thing for a week, then once or twice every month, left the game sit for a few months, and finally, either at the end of 2005 or in the beginning of 2006, I decided to go back and beat it. And I did.
And what's most embarrassing is that I almost never finish games, especially RPGs. I don't want to tell you which games I haven't finished, you may actually think less of me.

That's not an embarassing moment. That's one of the several things TP FAILED at.
