Title: Nitro Bikes - Wii Exclusive
Post by: trip1eX on July 12, 2007, 10:57:05 AM
I didn't see any info on this game. Made by folks who did Excite Truck 64. Ubi is the publisher.
New Wii exclusive title: Nitro Bikes. They're showing a gameplay trailer. The music is all xylophone and then... metal and crazy destruction etc. Looks a lot like Excite Truck with jet-powered dirt bikes. Controls with the same sideways Wiimote position as Excite Truck, too. Available holiday '07. Online play up to six players.

Looks interesting, then I see who is publishing it and I get really sad.

The website is in German, to download the trailer click the blue highlighted word hier. The screenshot stills make the graphics look like ass but the trailer make it look pretty damn good. The intro to the trailer is a little cheesy but my interest in this game shot up considering how much excite truck was fun and this looks like it keeps that fun alive and kicking. Also the control scheme (judging by the little wii remote segments) looks very similar to excite truck.

Keep in mind this is made by the people that made Excitebike 64 (Left Field), not the people that made Excite Truck (Monster). It does look somewhat similar though, and actually it looks good in action...and being online is awesome.

Thanks for the link, I've been trying to watch the trailer at IGN and failing.
Looks like a blast. I hope the stunts are easier to pull off than they were in ET.

Ohhh damn I was about to have eight orgasms over the whole being developed by Monster thing. BUT EXCITE BIKE 64 WAS PRETTY GOOD SO I WILL HAVE SEVEN INSTEAD.

I didn't see any land-aligned-for-a-boost excite...
But Left Field! They're still around? They completely disappeared from my radar for like... FOREVER!

Not interested. I liked Excite Truck because of the star system itself. It game me more ways to win.

Hopefully LF and Ubi puts more polish into the game and make a decent trick system.

Hmmm...saw the trailer to this game. It looked just like Excite Truck...and I'll probably play it for 5 minutes and throw it in my closet to collect dust like Excite Truck...or just not purchase it at all...unless...
ONLINE with VOICE CHAT!!! Some company please prove that this is possible on Wii...and not just DS...

How dare you throw Excite Truck in your closet after 5 minutes of playtime! One of the best Wii games thus far, no questions asked.

And the controls sound awfully familiar "IGN Wii: How do you play the game? Please explain the controls.
James Higgins: Hold the Wii Remote horizontally with the buttons facing up. Tilt it left and right to steer and while in the air, tilting the remote back or forward will point the nose of your Nitrobike up and down. You also have Gas and Brake and to use your Nitro you hold the D-Pad - then you just hold on! "
"IGN Wii: Why did you decide to go with the classic-style NES-held control setup, omitting the nunchuk?
James Higgins: The classic style control setup lends itself naturally to driving a bike when coupled with the Wii's motion sensing capabilities. The nunchuk is unnecessary for this work, and in fact would have made the gameplay clunkier. Fortunately, there are enough buttons on the NES style setup to do braking, boosting, and an assortment of tricks. "
Left Field is making this sound good, the executive producer of this game is an ex Nintendo employee that Nintendo loaned out to them and was one of the main guys in charge of Excitebike 64.
Edit: on a sour note - IGN Wii: Any final words for fans looking forward to this game?
James Higgins: Yeah -- look at our website (www.left.com) on launch day, where we'll be posting our friend codes so we can stomp you all online [smiles].

That's pretty awesome . . . but how will they get our friend code?

They'll probably have a messageboard up when the game's released.

On an interesting note Left Field is trying to make this a 10 player online game! But their minimum they set their goals on is 6. If this game ends up awesome then Nintendo will have some nice little competition for a online enabled racer.

Something like Excite Truck but with more emphasis on multiplayer with online play for 6+ people. This sounds very promising. And you know it'll be good because it's made by a member of the Dream Team!

Does anyone else think that it would have been much cooler to use the Wii Remote and Nunchuck like handlegrips on a real bike. Rotate the Wiimote for acceleration and tilt both controllers to steer? I would imagine they tried that and it just didn't work cause it seems an obvious thing to do.

The major problem with that is that you will have horrible access to the buttons, its much easier to go with the excite truck route.

So why exactly isn't this called ExciteBike?

I would imagine the ExciteBike name is a Nintendo IP. Hence why Truck carried the series on.

GameRankings.com show a 3.5 out of 10 from Nintendo Power. Unfortunately, I think it's safe to assume by the lack of reviews that this is one to pass up. I was really looking forward to it, too.

Same here, I was really pumped for this title, it's too bad if it turns out as bad as NP is claiming. I guess we will just have to sit and wait for the next entry of the Excite series.

Geez. All they had to do was remake Excitebike 64 and it would have been golden. I wish there were an online review so I could see what the deal is. I'm guessing it's the controls. Maybe the online multiplayer, too.

In IGNs preview there was a lack of polish, closed environments but has much more diversity and more track tiers when you compare it to excite truck.

Anyone take the leap of faith on Nitrobike yet? I really, really want to - but there is no chance in hell I'm going to buy this without seeing a review or two, first. At this point, I think zero reviews amounts to abysmal gameplay. I hope I'm wrong.

It's a 4:3 offender. (it only runs 4:3 aspect)
It's quite blurrier than most Wii titles.
Generic rock music.
Initial learning curve is a bit on the steep side. They pretty much throw you into the fray without any sort of tutorial at all.
Maybe it's just me, but the tracks seem to be awfully thin on a whole. This was one thing that NP complained about and right now I have to sort of agree with them. It wouldn't seem so bad if it was just the later tracks like that for a little added difficulty, but it starts that way and without knowing how all the controls work (the manual DOES NOT explain how to do 90 degree turns at all, it's in one of the loading screens if you're fortunate enough to catch it). The thinness issue could also be me going back to point one, it's a 4:3 offender and I haven't had to play a Wii racing title that way in a long while.
You do stunts in mid air to gain more nitro boost. Boost is handled like Motorstorm, if you overheat you blow. Blowing up reduces your Nitro.
Controls are pretty much like Excite Truck in terms of steering and air control. Dpad is boost. Mid air tricks however, are done with combinations of the D-Pad and button 1.
Haven't got the chance to play it online against anyone yet, apparently nobody owns it except me and maybe six others right now and I've yet to see the other six.
Gonna go back and play it a bit more, but my first impressions are eh. I think the track designs are getting me more than anything else because there's so far they all seem too thin for high speed racing, there's no real shortcuts or multiple paths in the tracks that I've seen so far, and because of how condensed things are, the track itself sometimes gets obscured. Doesn't help that nobody is playing online either.

Okay this game came in. So I have played it for about half an hour now. And honestly, it isn't to bad :P. It's basically ExiteTruck with overly thin levels, even more cheating AI, and worse graphics. Couple of things that already piss me off are:
- The overly thin tracks - Some thing else that it has in common with ExiteTruck, the tricks seem nearly unresponsive. Whats worse about that, they're actually BUTTONS rather then wiimote flicks.
Thing I like so far
- The arcade-ness - The exitetruck-ness - And the superior to Exitetruck trick system. When you do a trick, it actually increases the amount of boost you have. That is way better than Exitetruck. It actually makes doing tricks worth the risk.
So far, I kinda like it :P

getting a 1080 truck spin (or higher) is never a risk

Well, the IGN Review is up and it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. They gave it a 6.5 citing it's not so great visuals, poor online implementation and awful soundtrack, but praised it for it's fairly decent controls and trick system, and overall sense of speed.
Seems like when the price drops to around $20 or less it will be a great pickup. For now IGN recommends a rental, and also recommends to just buy Excite Truck if you are considering Nitro Bike and have not gotten ET just yet.

LOL. Is this the first time ever that IGN gave a game a higher score than Nintendo Power?
