Title: Dragon Blade - Wii Exclusive from D3 Publisher - This Fall
Post by: Kairon on June 20, 2007, 03:17:19 PM
So, IGN just revealed Dragon Blade, a single-player level-based action game in which you use motion based regular attacks as well as special "Dragon Moves" which are earned by beating the Dragon Bosses to get the titular legendary weapon.

IGN also has a trailer that makes the game look like The Wii's first 3rd person action game in the vein of GoW (though obviously, not as violent/sex-obsessed/greek), and though it's described as a fairly straightforward action game, it's slated for this fall... looks like this title will beat Soul Caliber Legends to the punch!

Published by D3 Publisher (small publisher, also published Puzzle Quest for the DS), and developer Land Ho (who apparently worked on a Panzer Dragoon game... but I can't find any more info on 'em right now)... did I mention this title is exclusive?

I hope all you "why aren't third parties giving us original games" people give this one a good long hard look, because it's what the Wii is all about: a small publisher, a small developer, using a fast dev time and a no-nonsense TRADITIONAL game concept, and making good use of the Wii controls from what IGN tells us, trying to make a name for themselves in the big bad industry.

It seems like an interesting game to see it finished and polished, very much polished.
Another month and we will see how it truly pans out, if they decide to show it off at E3.

I'll be cautiously optimistic about this game.  I have to say, the voice over was terribly cheesy.

Interesting thing, one of my classmates' final presentations included the trailer for Thief: Deadly Shadows. That trailer had a perfect cheesy movie trailer voice.

"Now, the world's greatest thief... a man who has no past... no face... no allies... will have to use his powers of deception... to choose... his destiny!"

That Nintendo is dragging the industry into casual gaming, oh wait, nevermind.

The Dragon Blade itself looks pretty sick, I just hope they polish up animations of the bosses a little. Other than that, I thought it looked pretty good, very God of War like which shouldn't be a bad thing at all.

I wonder if they put one of the Simple 2000 devs on that game. They love to make beat em ups with crappy animations.

Don't they have some time on this?  I'm sure they'll clean up the animation because it is really more noticeable in beat em ups and fighters then other genres.

This game looks like it will be fun. And I do agree with the God of War similarities, but I'm glad the themes and setting are different.

One of the main reasons I liked GOW so much is because of the setting. There's really nothing more epic than fighting a god! Seriously, whats a more powerful enemy than a god?

Looks pretty good....needs alot more polish. I do like how a dragon came out of the blade though. That was a nice touch.

Oh man, this game isn't pretty. It seemed to be on misconfigured TV, so that may have been half of it. The levels look and feel like an n64 game. It's hard to target the enemies and movement feels stiff. However, the Dragon powers when you flip them out look good and are pretty cool. I just wish there was a better game built around them.

Hard to target the enemies and stiff movement? urgh! I hope... I hope they fix that...

I just finally got my review copy of Dragon Blade.  First impressions are pretty good!  The story is stereotypical fantasy stuff, but the game seems pretty serious about it, i.e. I don't think they're just giving me an intro and then ten hours of action, but rather some storytelling throughout.  And I have to admit, the fire sword is very cool and seems to be upgradeable, as is the armor.  Motion controls are surprisingly responsive and consistent, with five basic attack moves, several combos based on which move is your third in a sequence, and several air attacks as well.  I wish Zelda had this much control over the sword, and maybe the next one will.  So far I have not been bothered by the graphics; I don't think they're as bad as some people in this thread have suggested, but I'm not ready to say they are good just yet.  The first (training) level is very easy, but if the challenge ramps up a good bit, I think this may be a very nice option for Wii owners who want something in the vein of God of War or Heavenly Sword but can live without the top-tier production values.

How is the enemy targeting working? It wasn't very hot last time I played the game.

You just press B to target the nearest enemy.  It's a little tricky to change targets, but I haven't really needed to yet.  Once you have a target, the camera automatically circles around that enemy, just like in Zelda.  It works fine.

You know, if this game turns out to be pretty good I'll be pretty surprised.  Hopefully it will be good and will have according sales.  I think the Wii needs a hack and slash franchise to be identified with the console.

Edit: Just saw the press reviews.

I have seen the IGN and GameSpot reviews (though not read them fully -- that's a personal policy when I'm still reviewing a game) and from what I have played so far, I disagree with their overall assessment.  I'd say Dragon Blade is like a God of War with really low production values and quite good motion controls.  If you like hack-and-slash or beat-em-up games, you will like this.

Hmm, well then maybe I'll give it a rental after I finish the current wash of games.  If I like I'll probably be able to pick it up cheaper by then, and if not I'm only out a few bucks.  I really did want this to be a good game, but I was never holding out much hope.  "Dragon Blade" just sounds generic.

Just got my copy! I think I'll have to take a break from Crash of the Titans to try this one out!

Edit: This game is so budget it's adorable! It's the bare minimum of menu, the bare minimum of cutscenes, and the graphics look like a GC game. But the controls work, the scenario 's backstory is actually decent, and the gameplay is straight-up straight-forward action game.

Unfortunately, that isn't enough to call this game "God of War" Lite. God of War, to me, succeeds on an exceptional amount of polish and seamless fluid controls, as well as breathtaking spectacular set pieces. You take that away, and all you've got is a plain jane action game. And that's what Dragon's Blade is.

2 Dragons down! 4 to go! I swear, that second dragon's third form is an absolute nightmare. The only way I was able to beat him was to go for broke and kill him before he killed me.

Hahahahaha bleeeurgh.

I couldn't figure out any weak point for this third form, so all I could do was get into a slugging match with him and hope for the best.

So, is Dragon Blade relatively short then? Is the whole thing about fighting dragons or are there other creatures?

As far as I can tell... there are about 5 enemy dragons you have to vanquish. (Or is it 6?) In addition to that, there are five corrupt kings who serve as half-way bosses to the dragons.

The game is broken up into worlds of about 4-5 stages for each dragon. Each stage takes between 8-15 minutes to finish, or at least they have so far.

With respect to character design, the dragons are each a radically different archetype. One is more of a chinese water dragon, one is more of a giant evil snapping turtle, one is more of a serpent, etc. The corrupted kings themselves are actually also interesting pieces of character design as each king has turned -half monster in different ways, from just an arm, to their heads/faces, etc. The enemies are for the most part predicatble fodder: lizardmen, pigmen, minotaurs, spiders, bats and variants thereof.

I just beat the third dragon, and he took me about 45 minutes to learn and to beat. The trick to it is that each dragon tends to have multiple stages to go through (well, 3 stages really), and each stage has its own attack patterns and timing to learn. This means when playing a boss stage, you're likely to go through it multiple times just to learn the patterns and timings of the attacks, and to develop your own strategies to avoid them or turn them to your advantage. It's very, very important to learn the timing of some boss attacks perfectly because if you block right before an attack in Dragon's Blade, not only do you not take damage but the game even rewards you with a little life. This is important when trying to keep your health up through all three of a boss' phases, instead of having your life whittled down slowly.

In that respect, I'm actually very staisfied with these bosses because they are very traditional, and hardcore in the way bosses in NES and SNES games were. I'm dying a lot in this game due to the dragons and kings, but luckily the game's checkpoint system tajkes the sting out while I learn their attack patterns and dragon's get their own boss stage so after you die, you can just restart the stage with no filler to dig through.

I'm glad you're enjoying it, Kairon.  It is a quite difficult game and very old-school in so many ways.  Oddly enough, I have found the motion controls to be almost perfect if I turn the sensitivity all the way DOWN.  This prevents any stray movements from causing the wrong attack, which was happening quite often during combos or hectic battles.  Now the sword does exactly what I want it to, and that's a very cool feeling.

Can someone give me some tips for one of the dragon kings?  This boss is very hard and very frustrating...

It's the Bird boss the one that you fight after you get the tail.  He has one bird leg and can scream to freeze you and shoots out these unreal powerful fire balls.  Can Kairon help by chance?  Thank you
