Title: GameCube Sales Double in February
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on March 19, 2003, 08:01:06 AM
Plus, release dates for Mario Golf (GameCube) and Advance Wars 2 (GBA).

Nintendo of America has announced that GameCube sales in February increased 110% over January sales.  The GameCube software tie-ratio now stands at 8.4 games for every system on a year-to-date basis.  The sales boost is attributed to Nintendo's bundle offer, which gives new GameCube owners a free game with the system.

Game Boy Advance sold more than 250,000 units in February, representing more than 25% of all game hardware sales, despite the fact that an improved version launches later this month.  GameCube and GBA combined to make up 37% of all game hardware sales and more than a quarter of all game sales in February, though Nintendo didn't release a first-party title for either system until mid-March.

In other news, Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire have sold over 4 million copies in Japan so far, while preorders for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker have reached 600,000 units in North America.

Nintendo has also provided updated release dates for its first-party games through the summer:

It gets better... the 600,000 preorders for zelda don't include electronics boutique. The manager of the store in town told me that EB has 500,000 preorders in north america... woot! 1 million pre orders!

Are you sure that EB isn't included?  It seems rather strange to me that a chain that big isn't included...  But man... Platinum before it's even released.  That's really something.

As for the news at hand, I guess we see now that the GameCube outsells the Xbox when on equal ground, considering that MS has been giving away several games with every Xbox for some time.

ya, i'm sure. EB didn't release their numbers to Nintendo. To add to the number, you've also got all the really small retailers that every city has. i'll bet 1,250,000 or more is the final pre-order number.

The only ones who report their preorders to Nintendo are the ones that get the games from Nintendo directly. That would be the biger retailers (Wal-Mart, Babages, etc.) This also includes the distributers who distruibte to the smaller shops. So this number is fairly accurate.

....sigh I have to remember to put all my thoughts in...

Unfotuanatly this may mean that a lot people may not get their copies in the first few shipments. The Software Etc which I preordered at said they expect to be sold out within 24-hours of them releasing the game. (They are waiting until five to release it and they close at 8 that day so it is a fair asumpition.

True- even though I LOVED Jet Set Radio Future and with the XBox you get 2 free games, most people aren't interested in either and don't like either once they play them. With the Gamecube, even though you only get 1 game, you get a GOOD game that everybody will like.

I can pretty much guarantee you that EB did NOT take 500,000 pre-orders nationwide.  EB is a MUCH smaller chain than GameStop, which was included in the 600,000 number.  And I know for a fact that EB was shipped fewer pre-order discs than GameStop.  Whomever told you that EB had 500,000 pre-orders was either mistaken or lying.

Yeah because Gamestop is:
Gamestop, Software Etc., Babbages, or Funcoland.
All four of them count as Gamestops...I got mine at Funcoland even.

Anyway, it would be cool if it went platinum before it was released?
Get with it man, it's been platinum...600,000 in America. It has sold about the same in Japan, maybe a bit more. Either way it definately sold 400,000 in Japan, and simple math would tell you it's sold a million copies by now.

I hate to bust the bubble, but while  Gamecube's sales are up, there hasn't been a tally of total (hardware sales.) Last I checked, these were the figures as of December 2002. Slighty outdated, I'm sure, but just a rough figure for people to think about. (courtesey of Nintendojo.com)

Cumulative Installed Base:
PS2: 15,870,000
XBOX: 4,601,000
GCN: 3,583,000
GBA: 11,894,000

So tally the new results and see what you find. My math skills are simply not up to snuff

Don't forget, this is supposed to be indicative of a sales trend. The installed base is important, but things are a changing....Zelda, F-Zero. (more to be announced). What more do you need?

I always here of Gamestop being this huge company and EBGames actually being much smaller, but here in Southern California its just the opposite it seems.  I can find an EBGames in pretty much every single mall, but a Gamestop or one of its sibling companies is a lot harder to find.

That's because they are mostly found in malls. Most big malls have both an EB and a Gamestop store.

But of course if you live in a high class suburb of a big city (such as Marietta where I live, near Atlanta, or say one of those rich type suburbs surrounding LA or Chicago and such...), you should be able to find them in one of those long shopping area things with the big stores like CompUSA, Wal-Mart, or Borders with lots of little stores in between...
