Title: Nintendo Emulators being sold at Malls -- money in the pocket?
Post by: Requiem on May 17, 2007, 09:29:07 AM
Couple days ago I saw a kiosk of a N64 type controller hooked up to a tv. It was in one of those islands in the mall and it was running all sorts of old school Nintendo classics. Now, this wasn't the first time I've seen one of these things, but it was the first time I've seen one since I heard Nintendo will pay people to tell them about it.
First off...is that even true? I heard it here a long ass time ago (back in the Don'tHate days), so I guess it stuck with me. Can I really get money just by telling them the exact location of such a distributor?
Secondly, how do I go about it? Do I call them or what?
Any help would be appreciated (i'm looking at you Kiaron (( I think it was you that mentioned it before)))

You've never been to the corporate pages on Nintendo.com before?

I can't remember anything about that Requiem. You must have me confused with someone else?

I don't remember a cash reward being offered, but I've seen them in a few malls, of course. They actually seem to disappear sometimes. I usually just tell the person operate the stand that I've read that they are illegal, so they may want to reconsider selling them.

So I talked to a Nintendo representative (a number I got from the corporate pages on Nintendo.com), and he said he's never heard of such a thing.
Pro, do you know something I don't?
I swear it was here that I heard about a reward.

Will you do what is righteous?
Or do you just want some silly reward?

Well, I have never heard of them giving montary rewards for reporting such things.
If you really want to have fun with it, somewhere there's a .PDF file that has the picture of the guy who was apparently responsible for importing tons of these and redistributing them, along with the sentance he got and some other anti-piracy stuff. You could try to find that, print out a few 100 copies and pass them out in front of the kiosk.

Hmm, UncleBob, I did a Google Search, and I couldn't find anything based on what you said.

It was in the forums at some point. I'm sure Super Forum Searching Samurai Vudu could find it.

Yeah, you might try some different search terms. I've been trying to find it but I haven't had any luck. Additionally, the post that used to be on the Nintendo forums isn't there anymore.

Well....
You can visit this old thread to get the good and bad news. I can not verify the bad news, but I have pictures of the trip.

The ironic thing about this photo is that this was taken on the trip that I won from PGC/Nintendo. Deezer is making that expression because the shoddy device resulted in Mario's demise for no apparent reason.

Well, it's weird that I never heard of it, but the pictures are dead. Did you ever go to Disney Quest there? It sounds similar, though not entirely the same. Disney Quest has several arcade machines, some even rare, like an Ergheiz Cabinet, along with some mostly low quality virtual reality games. Now that the Wii is out, some of these games seem even less impressive, though I haven't been in a few years.

Yeah they're definitely poor quality, although for some reason some young teen female was absolutely enthralled with SMB, to the point where she was just sitting there on the ground on that wonderful day play it for quite a while. The smooth person would have probably asked if she wanted to share a drink on that hot summer day, instead of going to the pac-man cafe, finding F-Zero AX, and playing it for two hours.
Those N64 with genesis, snes, and nes games devices are absolutely illegal.

I ended up with 1st place in mute city after 10 runs or so... which probably means nobody else played the unit much
I have not been to Disney Quest... it sounds cool though and hopefully I'll remember to check it out next time I'm down there. Sounds like something that would be in Downtown Disney, but I don't remember seeing it.

Well, it will be sorely missed, even though I never knew about it before today.

I did what was righteous, but not without sweet talking them to put my name in the report.
They took my name and number down, so who knows.

I had heard rumors that Nintendo sends out nifty gifts for turning stuff like that in to them...
Like a free DS and stuff... I've never gotten a report of it actually happening though.

Here ya go! Photo copy a couple hundered of these... then pass them out in front of the booth until you get thrown out by mall security.
Then send a friend in to do it.

I actually got something like this at a local Goodwill location for a few dollars. Mine doesn't have a cartridge port, but it does have a (cruddy) light gun. The whole system is pretty buggy. Still, it plays a game of Super Mario Bros. and Tetris just fine.

I would so hand those out if I see another one. I'd be so happy to do it.
