Post by: wandering on May 04, 2007, 10:39:15 PM
Zelda is an exceptionally good action-adventure game series. And action-adventure games are the second best kind of games, as demonstrated in the following list:
A list of video game genres, ranked in order from best to worst:
Adventure Action-adventure Platformer Simulation Party Strategy Rhythm Scrolling shooter Light-gun Survival horror First-person shooter Puzzle Stealth Role-playing Vehicular combat Racing Sports Beat 'em up Educational Interactive movie Maze Fighting Massively multiplayer online

Educational and stealth games are waaaaaaay too high up on that list. Try again.

Puzzle games are way to low. Puzzle games should be number one.
Also, I have some cleaning kits that should probably be higher than MMOs.

Adventure games are indeed number one. Indeed.

Zelda's too easy for some people to enjoy because they need to feel a sense of elitist accomplishment.

You never told me my real father was Zelda.....or, I guess, Sheik in this case.
Actually, how can this be possible?

Well, actually, I still hate mmorpgs. As a whole. And I still like action-adventure games, I guess, just not any released since like Banjo-Kazooie.
I'm not sure "maze" and "stealth" games are real genres. What exactly is a maze game, anyway? Pac-Man?
And what is an adventure game, without action? Besides a terrible idea, I mean.

Yes.......... That's the one...........
Make one spelling error and this forum is up in arms. There's a friend code thread created in the DS forum that hasn't been locked yet but everyone is up in arms over a simple spelling error. Ohhhh, this place needs some proper priorities.

I miss the threads involving segagamer posts and then several replies highlighting posting errors. Those were always entertaining reads.

If you are referring to locking the thread, then my answer is yes. I even made my case as to why I would be the right man in that thread. Otherwise, you may need to give a bit more explantion as to what you are referring to.

Do you guys want me to make my own list?

Halfway through rearranging these I had to think a lot where to place X genre, because there's ones in each that I like and dislike. I really like light gun games, for example, but too many companies release terrible ones and there are only really a couple good ones.
Maybe this list will help you guys understand where I come from in my gaming tastes. By now, I've played over 1000 video games and I'm pretty tired of long, easy games.
The top four up there are games in the purest form, I think. Full of skill and pwn.
For survival horror, well, I've really only played RE and not any Silent Hill or D or whatever. Well, I played Siren a bit and liked it. But I really, really like most all of the core RE games, because they are interesting and challenging. I'm a big RE nerd.
Strategy, I like Starcraft and Advance Wars and FOOTMAN FRENZY
About stealth tactical squad tactics stealth recon strike ops, well, I'm not sure what all goes in there, like Metal Gear and Rainbow6/Tom Clancy's Pro Skateboarder/Counterstrike? Those are pretty fun. Metal Gear feels a bit more action-adventure to me, though.
I liek drifto. Some average genres filling out the middle.
For RPGs, you guys have probably heard me talk smack about them before. But really, it's not the genre itself, it's just that most companies are terrible at making them, IMO. Fallout 2 and FF6 are in my top ten games ever, but there's a hundred games outside of those that suck balls.
Same with light gun games, I love Time Crisis, but the other games in the genre are terrible. I played the newest HotD here in Japan and it sucks, and so do Area52/Target Terror/etc in American arcades. I haven't gotten around to playing Time Crisis 4 yet though since most of the places I've seen it, it costs 2 bucks to play.
Every party game that isn't Pac-Man Fever and Pac-Man Versus pretty much sucks
Adventure games, LOL. http://www.oldmanmurray.com/features/77.html - I guess if that DS game with the party van bait and the ghost sidekick was an adventure game, that was pretty good.
MMOs, LOL. As you guys may know, I play a lot of WoW, but it really seems like more of a deathmatch game to me than an MMO. If you're playing WoW on a PvE server, you're probably playing one of the worst games ever made.
Every sports game that isn't Tecmo Bowl or Tiny Toons Acme All-Stars pretty much sucks
And I don't understand how anybody could possibly place an educational game or interactive movie game above anything else. Unless it's a porn game, then I'd move this genre to at least the middle.

S-U-P-E-R, but why don't you like Zelda games? I'm just curious, because the action-adventure genre is fourth in your list, and I understand how some people just don't like Zelda kind of games as I know a couple of people like that, but I am still curious to know why you don't.

I loved Zelda games until I finished Ocarina of Time. It seemed really slow paced and a lot more formuliac. I had some fun with it but not enough to play it again, ever, after I finished it. I started Mask of Majora and it seemed just the same and I got bored with it part way in and never played it after that. I think I played Wind Waker for like 30 seconds at E3 and never played it again after that. The new yiffy adventure seemed exactly the same and I don't really plan on playing it ever.
So I guess the short version is that I find them way too boring.

I respect your position. I'd probably feel the same way, if I didn't suck at games.
Quote Adventure games, LOL. http://www.oldmanmurray.com/features/77.html - I guess if that DS game with the party van bait and the ghost sidekick was an adventure game, that was pretty good.
Trace Memory? Yeah, that's an adventure game. As is Touch Detective, and Hotel Dusk. The best adventure game on the DS, though, is Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
I like adventure games, partly because their non-violent, puzzle-oriented gameplay appeals to my pacifist sensibilities, but mainly because I have terrible reflexes.
As far as that old man murray article - eh. Bad/illogical puzzles are a big problem with the genre. The worst thing about bad puzzles is that they don't just hurt the games they appear in. To really enjoy an adventure game, you need to be able to trust that, if you're stuck on a puzzle for an hour, it's because you're being stupid, and not because the game is poorly designed. It's hard to do that when you've been burned by bad puzzles in the past.
...But, still. There are a ton of good adventure games out there. I'm not sure if 'adventure' is my favorite video game genre (I know I just said it was, but I'm high on the excellent Sam & Max: Season One right now. If I just beat a Zelda game, I'd probably be going on about how great action-adventure games are) - but it is, in my opinion, certainly a worthy one.

Adventure Games > ALL.
Out of This World, DoTT, Monkey Island, and Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise were all that I needed to cement the genre in my childhood memories even though I wouldn't play another adventure game for years. Then Phoenix Wright came along to remind me that the best games weren't only going to be in the past, they'd be in the future as well.
Seriously, Adventure games are great not only because of their non-violent properties (EXTREMELY RARE in videogames) and because they can be a channel for excellent writing (though this is hit-and-miss) but also because their problem-solving emphasis appeals to everything that it means to be human, sentient, creative and intelligent.
