Title: Why are Wii cables so expensive?
Post by: KDR_11k on April 30, 2007, 06:48:58 PM
Seriously guys, Wii SCART cables are thirty f###ing Euros for the first party one. Even third parties charge 20 or more. What the hell is wrong with those people? I got a SCART cable for my Gamecube for 8 Euros and it came with gold plated connectors and the whole shebang!

Ever seen the standard prices for HDMI cables? I, for one, think the whole cable market is almost entirely a scam.

Very cool but it looks as if the standard needs a little upgrade. (Mainly a way to screw into a TV and official component pin designation.)
Edit: Oh, also Demand and a Niche market.

Well, because people are easy to fool.
You can either just say, "Oh.. these are 'high tech' cables! Very expensive to make" or say "Oooo, I did (insert fancy, mystical, or exotic sounding activity) to these cables while making them!" And then your 'Enthusiast' or general populous will think that the said cables are... high-tech, fancy, mystical, exotic, or all of them and hence worthy of ridiculous overpricing.
You know kind of like how a cup of coffee at Starbucks has to cost 10 US dollars because it's "premium" and made by a "barista" not just an employee. When McDonald's will sell you the same thing for a dollar or less.

Hrm, SCART sounds like it sucks. And TRUE standard HDMI prices are about $9.99 or less for a 6ft cable, but most brick and mortar stores refuse to sell them for such a low price.

Well, you know, you can blame that chick that spilled coffee on herself and sued, for that. She said the coffee was defective because it was... you know, HOT coffee.

I'd blame the American legal system for allowing sh*t like that to pass. People should be fined for bringing stupid cases to court.
Anyway, the cables are so expensive because they know that if people want something enough, they'll buy them regardless, even if the price is out of contreeze.

Nintendo, the maker of the most expensive (and least gold-plated, though gold plating isn't good when you connect normal nickel stuff to it) cables just says "RGB cable", nothing about "fancy oils and herbs".
Just saw that Big Ben now offers cables at 15€, maybe some day the cables will be 7€.
