Wow, indeed.
All those plane-related incidents makes me want to never fly again.

Yeah, you do that. An epidemic hazard will eventually hit your area and kill you anyway. Or the mother of all snowstorms will hit and freeze the east side of the US. That or you'll trip and break your neck, whichever comes first... .
But my question is why is this on the funhouse? It's serious enough that it belongs on the general chat.

Oh great; there was a chemical accident 20 minutes from my house. I'm going to go eat some string cheese now.

Mt. St. Helens is going to blow and kill everyone in the Pacific Northwest! Meaning OREGON.

You're all way too alarmist. We survived the fall of Rome, the Black Plague, two World Wars and a near-nuclear war. We've survived worse. I say bring it on, nature!

Blame the media. They're the ones responsible for creating a paranoid/alarmist society where even the smallest problem is cause for panic (case in point, the Aqua Teen movie promo scare).

Quote So far no one has been diagnosed with PSP. The last time PSP forced a closure of Northland waters for shellfish gathering was in October 2003, when the west coast from Kaipara to Manganui Bluff was affected. In February 2005 a different toxin forced closure of the Bay of Islands. The health board will now mount a publicity campaign warning people not to eat Bay of Islands shellfish - including signs at boat ramps and beaches, and warnings through DOC and marinas. The Health Ministry will alert GPs. There is no way of predicting how long the toxicity will last, Ms Watts said. "Further sampling will be undertaken and the public will be informed when the limits have declined to below regulatory levels." Anyone with queries about shellfish safety can call Elizabeth Watts on (09) 430-4101 ext. 7852.

Don't blame the media, it's not their fault, just the way their job works. They need to try and catch attention to their paper/broadcast, so they try to get the biggest baddest story out.
It's like blaming a dog for shedding.

I was three when Mt. Saint Helens went off the first time. It was like snow coming down. You had to wear a mask or bandana over your face for a few days when you went outside.

I swear, Calgary's like the safest place in the UNIVERSE. The only thing we die from is skyrocketing house prices.
I don't remember Mt. Saint Helens, but I'm told there was some ash around here.
