Title: BREAKING! VOTING CHANNEL?!?
Post by: NWR_pap64 on February 13, 2007, 01:11:00 PM
NOTE: I decided to turn this into an official thread about the channel. Discuss questions, answers and results and possible questions and answers!

I just received a letter from Nintendo saying that they have created a new channel called the Voting channel! From the looks of things, it looks like a poll channel where you answer several questions.

OK, so the new channel is called "Everybody votes" channel. The channel is basically a polling section in which you and 5 other people can register and answer questions of interests, then you can predict which option will be the winner.

First, you must run the system update. It basically allows you to use the channel. After you are done with the update, go to the Wii shop channel, then select "Wii ware". In there select "Everybody votes".

After the download is finished the system asks you to register your region. After that, you are told to select the Miis you want to use. Like I said, up to six users can be registered.

How it works
First there are the active polls section. In here you are given some questions for you (and anyone else you have registered on your channel). Once you select a question, your registered Miis will appear. In order to answer the question you must select the Mii then drag it to the question. After you select the answer, the channel will ask you if you want to predict the outcome of the answer. As in the first option, you must drag your Mii to the answer.

Options
Register Miis: Self explanatory

Voter data: In here you will see the Mii's stats, such as questions answered, how many predictions you got right and such.

Suggest a question: As the name states, you suggest one question to Nintendo, along with two possible answers. You only submit one question per day.

Worldwide polls: Questions that have been sent all around the world can be answered here.

And finally, there's Recent results and Poll history.

This is what I have so far.

He's just asking how is it. How can you ask how it is when a lot of people just found it about it?

Anyways, I am updating my console. I'll let you know how it is.

Had a problem with my connection (still do -- I think it's jammed with people accessing the servers), seems like there's a Wii System Update as well, but my settings still says 2.0U, so no idea if that was an actual update.  Still trying to get into the Shop Channel...

I've downloaded this voting channel threw the Wii Ware in the Shop Channel.

My system update didn't take that long at all, the channel requires an update for some "region" reason.  You have to tell it what region you live in in the Wii System settings...and by region it means which state you live in

From what it says, it just ask you questions and let your opinion be heard around the world....you can select a Mii to represent yourself

Actually, you could say this is the first online game on the Wii

This isn't a huge channel but it's something I'll definitely check every so often! The fact that it tracks your votes & predictions is awesome.

Like I mentioned, the question are mainly questions of interest. Like right now one of the questions is "Which is a more romantic Valentine's gift, roses or chocolates?". The deepest question so far is "Which century would you live in, the 19th century or the 21st century?".

Like I mentioned in the first post, you CAN suggest questions. I doubt they will allow something overly political, but they can allow deeper questions.

I love this channel...and I see huge benefits of it...but also question the limitations of the system...only registering 6 people to vote?

Right now they are only asking interest questions.

But imagine philosophy questions, political questions, Virtual Console request votes and so on, it has huge potential to be able to give Nintendo and us a reasonable amount of data, and its just silly fun.

It's pure fluff, but fun nonetheless.

In a somewhat related note, I wish the new system update (required to download this new channel) added the ability to customize the Wii GUI color scheme. I'm really liking the way this "Everybody Votes Channel" looks with the black buttons.

Someone suggested that Nintendo could use this to collect opinions on their gaming services, such as VC suggestions, opinions on the Wii itself and such.

If used right, this channel could help Nintendo a lot and many gamers would benefit from it.

Heh, nifty...I can see this actually helping if Nintendo actually makes any significant use of it. Knowing them, though, they won't.

Though I must say, I'm a little disappointed that they chose to create this channel instead of fixing some of the current issues with WiiConnect24.

Going off what NeoThunder said about this being the first true online Wii game, maybe this is meant as a stress test?  Remember the Animal Crossing Clock for PCs back before Nintendo Wifi Launched?  Just a thought.

They must be specifically targeting the Wii then (along with other things probably).  I would have guessed that they would simply rate limit the traffic instead.

I don't see how you could be dissapointed with it, it is a nifty new feature that we knew ZERO about. It was a pleasant surprise and I'm not sure how you could develop a negative opinion towards something that is basically a bonus.

I still think it's cute and fun, and could prove to be very useful to Nintendo should they use it to gather opinions on what their fans want from the console.

But I dunno, on the flip side there are just so many things I could see Nintendo improving (fixing the weather channel, allowing external hard drive connection through usb ports, patching broken VC games, improving their online, adding channels people actually WANT and have requested, the list goes on) instead of spending resources introducing a channel that nobody knew about and/or wanted.

It's a neat idea, but as near as I can tell, the channel is like a good-looking castrated guy: cute, but pointless.

The real issue is that all the questions are either/or right now. If they could make it like an internet poll where you have 5-10 options to suggest from, I could see some real use out of it, yes. For example, "which of the following VC games would you want to buy the most?"

Also, it would be nice if they let users post their own polls that would allow everyone on their friend list to vote on, it would be a neat addition.

To you, maybe, but I could see some other people enjoying this. In fact, out of all the non gamer features the Wii has, this is the biggest one of them all. Just think of the Wii as being a News paper. The weather and news channel are the useful parts while the Everybody votes is the arts and leisure session; not necessary but fun to pass the time with.

And Pittboi, they also released a patch for Mario Kart 64, so on that aspect they are working on it.

IGN posted some interesting ideas for channel. if I remember correctly they were...
- The Sports channel (a more detailed version of the sports section in the news channel)
- The movies and trailers channel: Using the region feature you can check the movie times in your area as well as watch trailers of the latest movies on your Wii
- The demo channel: This HAS to come at one point. The channel allows you to download DS demos onto your DS.
- The sticks channel: Check the stocks, for the bussinesy type

The Wikipedia channel would be nice.

It technically isn't a rumor since I do remember a Nintendo official saying that the Wii could be turned into a download station for the DS (I think it was Iwata the one that said it).

Question I submited:
Would you prefer 2 choices or 3?

Option 1: 2

Hopefully they take my question seriously. Its not much of a choice if you only have one other option.
I suggest everyone put in a similar question, so that Nintendo will take notice. This is an online petition of sorts afterall.

Everyone should make a question about Wii online games or particular VC games every day and Nintendo will get the hint.

"Would you download Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars if it was available on the Virtual Console?"
-Yes, I would.
-Well, I wouldn't not.

Etc.

Pssssssssssssssst, you just said Well I would not not. . . .

-No, they are fine as is.
-Yes, if they were priced a tad bit lower I would feel more confident in buying more obscure titles I havent played.

How about:

What do you think about the Virtual Console Pricing?

They are great as is, and a good bargain
They could be priced lower, so I could afford more games.

Followed by another question

Would you buy more Virtual Console games if the pricing scheme was:

200 NES, 300 TG16, 500 SNES, 800 N64, 1000 Original

Yes or No.

Ok, I know that the Pricing Scheme question would need to be broken down to single system questions probably.

What do you think about pricing for NES games on the Virtual Console?

1) I like the prices, it is a steal.
2) At 200 or 300 points I would buy more games

What do you think about the SNES game prices on the Virtual Console?

1) I like the prices
2) I believe 500 points is a better deal.

ect.

Or how about this virtual console question.

Would you support and buy Sega Master System games on the Virtual Console?

1)Yes, if the price is good.
2)No, that system does not interest me.

Baby steps, we all know Nintendo like to take progressive baby steps.

But you can always submit the question as
Would you prefer only 2 choices or more than 2 choices?

1.) 2 choices
2.) More than 2 choices

Spak: I would submit one of those every day or the same few over and over again.

Jon: If they were to release SMRPG I definately wouldn't not buy it. I've always wanted to play that game and my friend never let me borrow it.

BlackNMild:

Actually I agree.

I think we should as NWR community join together, and pick questions about the virtual console to submit to Nintendo every day.  We even need to double and triple up each question for about a month to get Nintendo really understanding what their fans think.

If we can get Nintendo to drop virtual console prices in the summer I think it would bring Nintendo more success in the long run.

Title: RE:BREAKING NEWS! VOTING CHANNEL?!?
Post by: JonLeung on February 14, 2007, 04:36:11 AM
Well, we know Spak won't help us with a campaign for Super Mario RPG, then!  :P

The NWR community isn't very big, and you should know that Nintendo does its own thing.  It'd be as effective as a petition, basically.  Maybe a bit more since they know every submitted question is coming from a Wii owner.  I suppose it doesn't hurt if you're willing to put in the couple minutes each day to write them out.  And Nintendo will take notice if there is enough of an outcry.  But when it comes to things like pricing, don't expect them to necessarily budge just because a handful of people tell them they should lower it. Heck, everyone wants lower prices, but some people won't actually buy more games just because of it.

Despite that, I might help sometimes if I had no other ideas for questions and someone had a clear campaign in mind.
Title: RE: BREAKING NEWS! VOTING CHANNEL?!?
Post by: Spak-Spang on February 14, 2007, 06:46:04 AM
Jon:  But if it is selected as a question to then our little community can get a question that the entire world can respond to.  The point of the community is to get the question up for consideration by posting it several times.

And if a vote for Super Mario RPG came up, I would say YES I would buy it.  Day one.

I like this new little poll system.  I has promise.

Spak, you're right, somehow I missed the point that if it gets posted, not only would Nintendo have seen it but then the rest of the world does and then we'd have a real indicator of how many Wii owners want something.  (Then again, someone could vote six times, but still.)

I remember when we discussed if Nintendo could access our play history from our message boards, but now we don't really know.  However, a poll is certainly handy for Nintendo to track what we like.

Given the Wii's "new gamer" philosophy, questions about the Wii or games itself might be intimidating.  However, if they were in a category all their own, it would be okay.  However, they might think that people would take it as a sign that Nintendo would necessarly do something to appeal to the popular choices, so then they'd probably put up a disclaimer if people did take the questions too seriously or felt that Nintendo wasn't.  :P

There's always some trouble.  So instead we're getting simple and innocent questions like if you like dogs or cats.  Then again...  Nintencats, anyone?  (Or Kittendo, whatever.)

Hate is such a strong word, though, he's just not a fan of the genre. He did say that he prefers real time action RPGs, which is still part of the RPG family.

I am not a fan of RPGs, but there are a few that I love.

The portable Mario RPGs
The original Paper Mario
Secret of Mana series
Chrono Trigger

I remember playing Super Mario RPG on the SNES and I enjoyed the game.  It actually felt like a true Mario game, and that is what captivated me.

I am really disappointed I can only ask one question at a time.  I will make a list of the questions I want to ask and slowly go through them one each day then rinse and repeat.

lol, this channel such a joke. I can see some nintendo marketing guy coming up with this just as a easy way to get research while doing nothing and still getting pay. Still fun though, I voted for roses/mountain/22century.

I like the idea of submitting questions together but they can't be stuff like "do you want cheap VC games" since they are too one sided, but they should still be win win for us like

What games would you like to see on the VC?
1 Neo Geo games! - 2 More Nintendo64 games.

Correct.

I was just playing the original Secret of Mana and enjoying it very much because it actually engages me and forces me to use my reflexes to dodge enemy attacks and out maneuver enemies and bosses alike. I just beat the two werewolves who had my new party member cornered despite the fact that my lower level placed me at a severe disadvantage against them. My trick? I ignored the usual strategy of allowing your melee attack to recharge and pinned them with a rapidly-swinging weapon to keep them from healing each other

Turn-based RPGs, on the other hand, might as well just ask you to press a button to see the next portion of the sub-par, inevitable, clichéd storyline. Had SoM been turn-based, the game would have demanded that I ran around getting into random monster attacks for hours until my level was high enough to defeat these werewolves instead of allowing me to outwit them and earn my next party member earlier.

And to keep on topic, I have a question for the poll:

I think turn-based RPGs:
1. Suck
2. Suck hard

I understand the one sided questions so tried to change my question around a bit.

I asked:

Would you buy more Virtual Console games if the prices were cheaper?

1)Yes
2)No

At first it still sounds one sided.  But be honest.  I have bought everything I wanted at this price basically...so I would honestly have to answer No...because Nintendo would probably still get my money.  Also some people will never use the virtual console feature, because they just don't care about old games...so that is a No as well.

Then there are people that would buy more games be it they can just afford to buy more...or they think they are overpriced and won't buy them until a price drop occurs.

ok......is every "one" little Mii supposed to represent each person that voted.  I mean, is that how many people are voting in this?  It doesn't look like that many

Hell no that's not everyone who voted. That's just a visual representation of it.

I enjoy how you can see the percentage that predicted correct and how the data splits between Male and Female.  Is everyone 82 Meters away right now?

I haven't downloaded the channel yet,  but I wouldn't expect Nintendo to use this channel to actually gather information.  If they ask about lower prices everyone will say yes.  The questions will probably be pretty much all fun questions like the first round.  Don't expect this to be the channel where everyone at NWR can complain through, but instead a channel for people to flip on quickly to enjoy for a few seconds.

Here's a good question......
Would you have bought the "Everybody Votes Channel" for 500 points?

I don't think anyone would have downloaded it since no one would know what it is.....perfect reason why we need demo VC games and channels

With two questions down, I'm batting a thousand, and yet I'm still 82 units of measurement from popular opinion.  How can that be?  It's unlikely that I'll keep up a perfect record, so is this the closest it's possible to be?  Is Nintendo making a statement about the inherent social awkwardness of gamers?

Dogs won by quite a bit, stevey... though there were some countries where cats were more popular (Sweden, for example). I chose "cat" for me, but figured dogs would win, so I predicted dogs and was right! Woo! This is kind of fun

Edit: These results were up last night for me... not sure what's going on...

Half of these countries probably voted for dogs as a food source.

Dogs do tend to have more meat in their bones.

Also, cat meat is only reserved for special occasions and for fancy restaurants due to how delicate their meat is.

My dad is always telling me that in Hong Kong, stray dogs become someone's lunch.  He says there's probably a law against that but that still doesn't stop some people.

One strange fact that I've always remembered is that some kind of green beans expand dog meat.  It's supposedly possible to feed green beans to someone who just made a meal out of a dog and their stomach could rip apart fatally.  Serves them right!

Anyway, I STILL don't have my Wii back from Nintendo of Canada so I'm STILL missing out.  Did anyone make a campaign of submitting particular questions about things they'd like to see?

You mean the "brushing your teeth" question? Yeah, I honestly thought the routine was before breakfast, but makes more sense to brush them after.

I think people just include it as a normal part of the morning routine; wake up, wash face/take shower, brush teeth, get dressed and eat something.

To be honest thats how mine goes but I don't eat breakfast (or I eat in the car).

Also this confirms that Pap is the whole of Puerto Rica Wii voting contingency.

My Wife is 29 meter and I'm 26 meter.  She's gotten 2 wrong/8 right/297 points and I've gotten 2 wrong/8 right/330 Points and we have voted in every single poll.  I hope that helps.

Vote Count: 14
Wins: 7
Losses: 3
Prediction Accuracy: 70.0%
Points: 249
Distance: 26m

Does anyone have any idea why sometimes on the national map there are three colours? I've seen, in Canada, the two greens (normal voting green and another less brighter green) and the normal voting pink.

Uh, presumably because different regions sometimes have different distributions of votes.

Actually I've seen it with Pink as well.  Overall four colors: Pink, light Pink, light Green, Green.  I just always read that as they were close to 50% towards one way or another.

Ceric, I too thought that the light colouring is significant for a tie.

Oh well, it's not that important anyways, just something to scratch my head on about.

Yeah, I'm hoping there is an update for the channel with three things:

1:  When you hover over a state you get the percentages.
2:  The world gets a third mode that overlays the globe with the percentages.
3:  4 choice questions.

Have people been using this as an easy way to send a message to nintendo?
Everyday my "poll" isn't a question with answers, but rather three separate statements, something like do more to encourage 3rd party vc content, get online play and scoreboards, or translate unreleased rpgs. I dont even phrase it as a question.
The stats and actual polls are nice, but I think this channel has more use as a feedback channel.

That's a great way to be totally ignored.  There are tons of ways to send Nintendo feedback already.  I don't get why anyone would want to spam up this channel with it instead of sending an email.

I thought the hot/cold question was stupid as hell. I mean, both are extreme weather conditions no human being was born to tolerate fully. People that are constantly exposed to blazing heat wish they were in a cold environment and vice versa, so how can you truly calculate what people prefer? If the question was "How do you prefer your tea/or coffee?", then it would make some sense.

What did you guys think of the latest set of questions?

This is what I picked:
1. How tall are you?: Above average
2. Do you like your name?: Yes
3. The next American Idol winner will be a: Girl
4. Which smell worse?: Old socks

I chose socks because I've yet to encounter bad breath that would dethrone the smell of old, sweaty socks.

The hot/cold question didn't specify what, exactly, was at that temperature, but any way you look at it, freezing cold is the only option for most of human existence.  You can bundle up if it's freezing cold outside.  You'd die if it were hot enough to boil water.  You need boiling hot temperatures to cook food, but you'd badly burn yourself if you consumed it before it cooled.  On the other hand, we eat frozen food all the time.

The height question is kind of odd.  If most people don't pick average, I'll be surprised.

I have a complaint about this channel now.  I didn't get to see the results of the questions I didn't answer.  I don't eat breakfast, so I couldn't answer the teeth brushing question, and I don't like to watch any sports on TV, so I didn't answer that one.  That doesn't mean I wouldn't find the results interesting, though, Nintendo!

You already have a very easy ways to send "messages" to Nintendo. Their Contact Us! webpage. Comon, you can type an email can't you? feedback@nintendo.com and support@nintendo.com Or you could always just call them at 1-800-255-3700 and _politely_ give them a piece of your mind.

Chances are, just like with the Forecast Channel and News Channel, they've got a separate company supporting the Everybody Votes channel. So in all likely hood, Nintendo is never going to see your "statements".

Besides, what's so hard about writing an e-mail? If you can "type" three cryptic statement "questions" everyday with your Wii-mote on the Vote channel. Then you can type three coherent and explained suggestions in an email to Nintendo everyday, which will actually be read by Nintendo. You'll probably spend less time typing too.

I won't.  Average and median are very different.  An extreme example to demonstrate my point would be five people who're 4 feet and another five who're 6 feet.  The average is 5 feet, but everyone is of unaverage height.

Besides that, the question regards perception.  It's possible that enough people may in their minds exagerate their height's difference from the average to skew the results.

That's exactly why I think it's the most interesting question asked so far.  We're talking about a much larger sample set than in your hypothetical situation, so there are going to be plenty of people close to the average height, by any definition of average.  It's the perception thing that I'm curious about.
