Title: Cnet made a funny.
Post by: MaryJane on February 02, 2007, 02:55:08 AM
From their top 10 must-have gadget list.
Quote All the consoles are in, and our editors have posted a final score in the next-gen gaming war. According to our three-way battle, Sony's PlayStation 3 is the gaming machine to beat. With high-def games and Blu-ray movies, backward compatibility with prior PS2 and PS1 games, a great UI, and HDMI output, it's the most well-rounded of the new machines. But its price is a definite barrier: $600 for the Wi-Fi-enabled 60GB version. The $250 Nintendo Wii is a great buy for the budget-minded, while the Xbox 360 has more great games and excellent online play
There are two ways to look at this.
1. The people are idiots because the Wii is obviously destroying the PS3 at every turn. Though they do make a fair point about the X360, it has more games, and very good online play there is no denying that.
2. They're looking at it from a technology point of view, the PS3 has more technology packed into though it lacks innovation, and thus is the winner.
The strange thing is that is on their top 5 most wanted gadgets, which I have to assume is user submitted, the Wii is second to the iPhone with the PS3 in third. You would think that would give them a hint as to want people want more, so this must be about the technology, which they make mention of.
Of course money hats couldv'e been passed.
Edit: Link Oh and the DS somehow manages to be 7th despite the fact that it's broken just about every video game record besides the ones held by the GBA that can only be beaten with time.

It's strange to me how everyone considers the hardware in it more important than the experience it offers. Just because the damn thing has everything plus the kitichen sink in it doesn't mean it is worth a damn thing. Just wait a year when the PS3 is still being crushed by the Wii and 360, people will be whistling a different tune.

I think it's the result of having techies review consoles. If Wii's price was a bit more in line with the power, we'd probably see guys like these giving it more credit, but they see all the bleeding-edge tech in PS3 and they're impressed. These are the types of guys who put together $5000 home theatres - Wii is the People's Game System! CAST OFF YOUR SHACKLES, COMRADES!

Someday, all analysts are going to get back on their mothership and continue searching for a planet where their methods of predicting the future have a chance in hell of actually predicting the future.

I want a job as an "analyst". I could probably have a pretty good track record on the things that I actually think I know about.
Either that or something like the "Transformers Consultant" that Mainframe had on the second and third seasons of "Beast Wars: Transformers" (or "Beasties: Transformers" here in Canada).
Just some job where I can rant about things that I think I know, and in the case of the "analyst", I wouldn't even need to be right or even close to general public opinion.

They'll be on Ark 2 along with the telephone cleaners and middle management.

That sounds like a HHGTTG reference. Is it?
As I was just talking about Transformers I had to think about that for a second, since the Autobots have a ship called the Ark.
Anyway, seriously, you'd think CNet would know better. Tech-savvy they may be, that they could appreciate the high tech specs of the PS3, but I think it's ridiculous if that's all they went by.

Tech is its own subculture.
Constant upgrading, constant benchmarks, new hardware, consistently high prices...
The same stuff that's leading to PS3 "healthy stock" and Nvidia Man's rage (and eventually his company's demise, but it's only fair since they're partially responsible for the techie climate itself by aiming to provide the highest end products in the first place. Sustainable business? ha. ha. ha.)

Yep, the exodus of Golgafrincham.

My brother just shelled out more than the purchase price of a 60 GB PS3 for a standalone Blu-Ray player a couple months back. That's one market they can cater to, though since they're losing a ton on every console sale it may be a market they don't want.

This is no big deal, this is the same way they reviewed PSP vs. DS. You forget CNET is a tech site, so the more stuff something does the better, and stuff like a "cheap" and good Blu-Ray player scores big points with them even if its a big reason the PS3 is failing (Blu ray makes price higher). They are the niche to which the PS3 is a bargain.
Video games are a unique category in the tech world where machines have exclusive features and software (its not like some MP3 player has exclusives on Snoop or Metallica, etc.... or certain tvs can only play certain programs). So they just "review" consoles in the same way they review other tech stuff, thats why you see stuff like this.

It's alright. I expect CNET on the whole to be the first group of assh*les up against the wall when the revolution comes.

I was thinking it was the whole tech point of view, until I re-read what I quoted and they say that's it's the console to beat, that would imply it had the lead already, which just goes to show that they have no idea WTF they're talking about.
Wii FTW.

No, that spot is reserved for NoE.
its not like some MP3 player has exclusives on Snoop or Metallica, etc....
Yes but certain MP3 players have exclusives on iTunes and a few European countries are already objecting to that.

"CNet endorses Real LifeĀ® as their console of choice for the next Grand Theft Auto game: reasons include photorealistic blood splatters, nearly unlimited area for exploration including incredibly detailed weather and water effects, and unprecedented police AI capable of adaptive learning and extremely realistic simulated dialog with the player."

HHGTG FTW (again).
