Title: ask me about my macbook overheating
Post by: S-U-P-E-R on January 24, 2007, 02:10:25 AM
<S-U-P-E-R> ask me about macbooks overheating
<Cowface> What's your relationship with macbooks overheating?
<S-U-P-E-R> my macbook overheats
<S-U-P-E-R> and i'm pretty sure it's due to an excess of thermal grease applied at the factory, ironically enough
<Cowface> I see.
<Cowface> Warranty?
<S-U-P-E-R> i have a fat super care plan
<Cowface> Where were you on the night of last night?
<S-U-P-E-R> the problem! is that i can either void it by fixing it myself (not too hard) or i can not void and try to take it to an apple store in tokyo (LOL) or send it back to america (LOL)
<Cowface> haha
<Cowface> nice
<Cowface> I say take it to an Apple store and have them send it back to us so we can screw around with it and send it back saying we have no idea what the problem is, but we cleaned the lint and fingernail clippings from your keyboard
<S-U-P-E-R> i'm also a little worried about someone at the apple store stealing my ram
<S-U-P-E-R> oh yeah and i don't have my own supply of thermal paste if i'm supposed to reapply it :[  this sucks
<Cowface> Put it on a block of ice whenever you leave it on
<S-U-P-E-R> heh heh

Just go into a computer store and ask for thermal paste if you need it. That's what I did last time.

From what I heard you won't see your computer for weeks or even months if you give it to Apple.

Actually I did some voodoo where I have the fans running all hardcore now, so I think it's good. If I suddenly disappear forever, though, you guys know why

My MacBook freezes whenever I try to rip a scratched CD on iTunes.

I mean uh. . .ask me about that.

Maybe you can try to use the heat somehow! You know, the proverbial lemonade!

Does it get hot enough to cook anything on?
Does it get hot enough to warm a small room?
Perhaps you could alter the color of your case if you drip mineral water on the hot spots, then let it evaporate!

I advise you to try all these things, and let us know of the results in this thread!

My mate's Macbook suffered from the random shutdown thing. He sent it to Apple Australia, TWO MONTHS LATER he gets it back, repaired for free but also two weeks after Apple released a software fix for it.

When the MBPs were first released there were a lot of reports of overheating. What many people found was that they had failed to removed the protective plastic covering the ventilation slots on the machine. You might want to check that out and make sure that nothing is obstructing the ventilation slots.

I can't afford to send mine for repairs, and I'd really like to run it in dual monitor without the laptop screen spazzing the freak out.  It's kind of upsetting.

What is even more upsetting is that running windows in dual monitor works fine.  Way to go OSX.

Methinks that its not a OS-related problem but a video card driver problem.

OS X would require its own implentation of the ATI/Nvidia device drivers because the operating system is so very different to Windows. Getting that problem fixed would require going through Apple and would require them to chase down the driver manufacturer to get the problem fixed and provide a patched version.

Yeah, don't send it back. Its not a hardware problem if you can do things fine with Windows. Hold onto it and wait for a new version of the video card drivers. I'll see if I can find out any info about whether this is a significant issue because that would be a good indicator of the timeline for a solution.

The device drivers because the operating system is so very different to Windows, after getting that problem fixed would require going through.

Ask me about my weiner!

It's funny, after seeing the thread name, I was coming in here to write the exact same response I made over two years ago. That's consistency.

Still humdrum without a picture to go with it..
