Okay, chill out.

First off, people get anal over grammar and spelling on a forum because unlike a face-to-face spoken conversation, there are no cues as to the mood or meaning of what is being said.  With nothing but words to go by, we have to make sense of what you mean by the very words you type.

And they probably "jump all over" you because you do it the most often and care the least.  I mean, come on!  Strong Bad would have a field day with your post in this very topic.  Grammar, spelling, punctuation and spacing!  It's all butchered, just so you can defend your own constant mangling of the English language.

No offense to you personally, but your posts can be hard to read.  Sometimes your posts are amusing because that's the best kind of character quirk we can get from you, however, it's hard to take you really seriously if you won't take spelling seriously.

oops I got my posts swicthed around I typed a better one that was meant to go here and wanted this one in the funhouse. By bad.

Anywyas yeah I know. I HAVE improved thought, just read any post when I was animecyberrat and see the improvment. It was just giving vudu a hard time for giving me a hard time no harm done I hope. Thast why I hate forums sometimes my expressions and tones dont translate so as it is just words, so I understand some I was venting also but its cool I hope.

The time you save by by not bothering to spell things correctly is passed on to the people who read your posts. It takes time for people to unscramble what you write.

See I think its like when I write by hand, none can read my hadn writting but me. I can read my psots and get what I was saying just fine so I dont even think others cant. Anywyas I am going to continue to get better if thast ok with all of you. Just dont be so harsh sometimes.

Alright, I didn't want to do this, but you forced me.

I do not want to cause any more problems and I know there is a chance he may be banned but I promised I would be careful not to step on any more toes. Witht hat said wandering has secretly sent me emails with account access to this profile so i could return to posting on PGC. Since you revuse to reply to my emails and since Johnny has told me he can't do anything about my banning I decided this was the best way to get to you.

I know wandering is a major joker and he means well but he does not know I am contacting you and i am trying to be reasonable and cool with you because I really never meant to be a problem. I was a small spnosr for PGC for a sshort time and would have gladly continued sponsorhsipp because first and foremost I lofe PGC I visit as often as I have time, second the number of hits the ad brought to my site were more than enough to justify the cost.

Next although that site has been put on hold, refering to Mean Green Records, because of certain issues we had to shut down the company, I still am owner/operator of a vintiage collectibles website that is more suited for PGCs demopgraphic. As such I would still like to consider the possibility of pursuing marketing my site through PGC, partly because of the reasons stated above and partly because of Johny's good will towards me and being a helpful and professional bussiness man. i sincerly do apologize for the flames I directed towards you and even though they were stared as jokes in you funhouse area I do aknowledge I did cross the line in attaking mantidors manhood, and all those who found the monkey ball games entertaining.

Still I see where i was wrong and I wish I had been given a fair chance to explain myself because I usualy tried to have a light herted attitude while at PGC because I didnt want to offend anyone.

I just hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive me for my actions and give me another chance. I won't say that un-banning me will affect my descision to reinstate my sponsorship of PGC as that is afinancial descision and not personal, also you guys seam well enough off financialy you don't need my money. So I wont make that an issue and I dont want you thinking I only wanted to place ads on PGC to get unbanned because I had been planning on that long before the banning accured. I just want yo to know that I was only trying to fit in and I thought I was making friends and enjoying myself discussing Nintendo, which I share a passion for with all who frequent PGC. I have sent emails to various staff memebrs before and so far only John has returned my emails so in that I am grateful he has been fair to me.

I know this is a long read and your probably still upset at me and likely going to atack or repremand wandering for this also, please leave him out of this he wasnt trying to sneak me in the back door he was trying to help me clear my name, he is a good man and I dont want to see him banned for my coming to you. I know you probably thinking this is a joke post, but it is not, this is really Richard A Todd contacting you, former owner of Mean Green Records and once-regular poster, still-regular visitor of PGC. Anyways that is all I have to say for now and pelase don't take any of this out on wandering he really didn't know I would contact you. If you wish to further correspond with me regarding this matter please feel free to email me at rat_born_in_1982@yahoo.com or meangreenproductions@yahoo.com i thank you for your time and I hope we can work things out because I really did not mean to cause any harm.
This is an example of a "professional letter" from animecyberrat.  Here he has written a persuasive expository with the goal of reinstating his account at PGC.  The recipient of this letter is not his friend; this was not posted on a message board in a casual manner.  In a letter such as this professionalism lends a bunch of the writer's credibility.

Please notice the abundance of spelling errors and grammatical mistakes.

You even missed some, vudu.  A missed apostrophe (PGCs), an unnecessary space (business man), spelling (you_ funhouse), and that was just a really quick glance before really reading that.  There are many places where commas probably could have been used, too.

...

And now that I did read it, I found even more, but I guess the point really is moot now.

Anyway, segagamer, if putting effort into spelling and grammar really is a task you'd avoid as often as possible, I would at least suggest that you put the effort into your own web site, for its sake.  It's not very professional.  I don't even know what your site is.  Is it "The Rat's Collectibles" (collectibles of a rat), or "The Rats' Collectibles" (collectibles of more than one rat), or "The Rats Collectibles" (which is how it's unapostrophed right now but sounds like they're collectibles of rats)?  Guessing by your previous name of "animecyberrat" (which I knew you were simply by your spelling, sadly enough) I would guess that you mean "The Rat's Collectibles".  Skimming over the text on the front page I see numerous errors.  "Negociate"?  "Usefull"? "Yo" (where you clearly meant "you")? "Your looking for"?  Not to mention the absolutely inconsistent capitalization all across the page!

It's one thing to be a sloppy forum poster, but your site's not going to get far if it's unprofessional-looking, no matter how much you advertise it.  If people see your site and see that you didn't pay attention in elementary school, or that you won't spend a few extra seconds to check your work, are they really going to trust your business?  I doubt they will.  Be honest with yourself here.

I personally don't get angry at people for bad grammar and spelling. If that's one of the cues we give off in our typing to replace the cues in our natural voices, then I consider people typing very poorly on the internet a form of slang, or a very very pidgin dialect. And I'm not about to go to a louisiana person and accost them for the way they speak their language, so I'm probably not going to go all uppity on people who can't type internet speak very well. I might respect them a little less for it, but that's just the way cues work in language: telling us where other people come from so we can make quick and unbfair categorizations of 'em.

Oh... and I think that I actually DO talk this way in real life... or very much like it. FAR less wordy and long-winded in real life though...

If you pronounced those words in a real conversation exactly the way it's typed, you could not carry on a conversation. Why type so fast anyways?

Arbok that wasnt even what i was trying to say . Read the analogy. I said its LIKE my handwirtting BECASUE I can readit I forget others cant. same with my posts, of course I Can read them I WROTE THEM I know what I was saying, I forget others cant BECASUE I dont read them I just type them and am done with it.

MJrx--- whatever, to answer for the millionth time. I have what is called rhemeoid (spelling aa sworn sue me) arthritis, I do not know much about it other than what doctors say and what i read but know it will get worse as I get older. It HURTS, beyond what I can express, to bend my fingers for long periods of time. I have to constantly stop and pop each joint individually one at  a time. That looses them up for a minute or two and then they stiffen up again and wont bend right. I type fast because it hurts to type slow. I get it over with asap. I explained all this before and everyoen argued with me over it then. Hey at least I am TRYING to fix errors yetsomeone continues to irgnroe the good psots I type and rag on every bad post.

It sucks if I could type slower I would. I try and I am finding ways to improve all the time. I know others who have the same problem, mostly older people but anyways yeah.

Plus I talk fast and am always in a hurry so i try and get things said quickly.

In person I am really shy and introverted, so I definately do not talk like I do here. Personally I don't mind bad grammar in the way of tense/punctuation and even spelling to an extent because I am not all that hot when it comes to those things. It does bother me though when I have trouble reading what someone is saying, and I don't want to be mean but I feel that about you. You seem like a cool guy but you can be kind of hard to follow at times.

"of course I Can read them I WROTE THEM I know what I was saying, I forget others cant BECASUE I dont read them I just type them and am done with it."

I often re-read my posts before submiting, not just for spelling but in case I missed a word like "not" that would completely change the sentence.  I also tend to think much faster than I type so I'll leave out whole words or use the wrong word entirely or change a sentence halfway but forget to change the first half of the sentence.  So I think in general it's a good idea to review a post before submitting.  Not just for the benefit of your audience but also to make sure you're actually saying what you meant to say.

I pretty much talk exactly like how I write except I don't type "gamin'" instead of "gaming" even though I pronouce it more like the former.  I do tend to write more in complete sentences than when I'm talking but that's because I have more time to think about what I write.  Talking is real time so I might start saying something and then realize that isn't what I meant to say so I'll correct myself.  When writing often that correction occurs before the post is submitted.

This is also more how I talk with people I'm comfortable with.  I use a lot less swear words when talking to complete strangers.

I pretty much talk in real life just how I type here. Though in real life im alot more out going, and speak like crazy, trying to never talk in slang, especialy since I live in the "hood." Though my personality doesn't translate well in these forums, mainly because I look at many of you as super experts on gaming. By the time I usualy get to a topic, everything that I would want to say is usualy said, and I hate to just throw in meaningless fluff.  So I usualy keep quiet. Thinking about it now, for some reason with Sonic and Pokemon games I feel like the super authority, and post alot when concerning them...

Anyway, Segagamer, I do talk like this in real life. Im just a million times more animated with my words, and gestures. Segagamer, no offense but, you seem very angry to me. I remember you as animecyber rat, but nothing about the kinds of posts you made. From what I read often, you get upset kind of super easy. Someone will say one thing regarding you(probably negative) and instead of pulling an Ian(keeping calm and explaining why you disagree in a civil manner) you go coocoo kaka. Just relax, the more you can accept and laugh at your own cirticism, and faults the happier you will become. At least with me that is.

I always ignore segagamer's posts.  Partly because they're unintelligible and partly because I don't like him.  But I think the not liking him stems from his unintelligibility.

And yes, I talk like this in real life.  People in high school used to comment at the formality of my language.  I'm always extremely polite, and try to sound like an educated individual.  It makes some people uncomfortable, but it makes me feel superior, and really, that's all I've got.

If it wasn't worth being written in proper English it's probably not worth being read either. Too many errors in the language just make it harder to read. Never mind that most people who can't be bothered to write proper English usually can't be bothered to think up proper arguments either so they're most likely just writing rubbish (and the posts from our dear friend here made me reach the conclusion that he's someone's joke account to troll the forums and throw out flamebait. Or maybe he's just in the employof the GNAA).

Oh and keep in mind that not too many people from other nations speak English fluently and as such may not be able to correct your spelling errors (or even worse, think that you as a native speaker know the language better than them and pick your habits up).

And to answer the original question: Wenn ich normal rede spreche ich nicht mal die selbe Sprache.
Title: RE: Do you REALLY talk like that in real life?
Post by: UltimatePartyBear on January 19, 2007, 02:20:12 AM
I'm nowhere near as wordy in real life.  Mostly that's because I'm very shy except around my friends.  When I need to talk to someone else, I tend to get nervous and it affects my speech patterns.  Usually I just slow down and speak haltingly as my mind thrashes around looking for the right words.  When it comes to writing, I relish the opportunity to think through what I want to say.  I reread what I write multiple times before posting it, and I often decide it's not even worth posting, even after taking several minutes to compose my thoughts.  The downside to taking my time is that I sometimes have a different thought at the end of a post than I did at the beginning, which I think makes many of my posts sound disjointed.  I've even completely changed my opinion in the process of thinking through how to express myself.  Incidentally, this post took me at least fifteen minutes to finish.

Personally, I try to only correct grammar when I find the mistake exceptionally confusing and repeated often enough to convince me that the writer doesn't know it's a mistake.  I had to stop letting bad grammar bother me just to stay sane.

Oh lovely, a mild flame thread on segagamer's "unique" grammatical style turns into a thread about personal style...My personal grammatical weakness is commas, which I tend to stick places in sentences where they technically aren't needed...

I tend to talk in the same manner in real life as I type here online, though I'm not QUITE as blatently cute and feminine with my word choice outside the internet realm...I do, however, like to use phrases like "Oh my" and "Oh dear," so I guess I can't completely hide my bizarre personality...

I know what you mean about commas, I use them like Elaine used exclamation points on Seinfeld!
Title: RE:Do you REALLY talk like that in real life?
Post by: JonLeung on January 19, 2007, 04:03:53 AM
I may be wordy and overuse commas, ellipses, and especially sub-sentences in parentheses (just like this one here for no reason), but that may be because of the pauses and side comments that I probably do make while speaking.

It would be amusing, though, if some people really did speak like they wrote.

I talk the same on the Internet as I would to someone in real life. Of course, my writing here is revised to make my ideas easier to understand. I think about language quite a bit, actually, and try to avoid the standard high school chatty talk ("Yeah so sometimes I'll be like all using my computer and then I like check out these forums and...").

Those who talk to me on the various IM's will know that my typing there is far worse, ridden with typos and spelling errors. It's a far more casual environment than a forum.

And of course I don't talk the way I type. As an Australian, I'm required to cut off the end of every word I don't abbreviate. Ya jus woulden ge it, en thin less ov me.

Well I first would like to say wow, I didnt expect so many people to reply. This turned from a joke post putin the wrong forum to a nice conversation. I would like to apologize to vudu for getting all mad at him though.

I have been having a bad week and that last post just put me over the edge. To be honest I dont talk at all like I do here, I try and be informal and all because that is how I tend to think most of the time. But in real life I am much harder to understand. I tend to speak like my friends, just not s much of a accent as some. And I do use exsessive slang and a mix of English and Spanish cuz thast how everyone else is round here.

Grammar is the one erea I do make more mistakes than spelling, partly because I have been out of school for so long I tend to forget some of the rules. Anyone who ever went to my forum and read the stories I posted can see that I can write, well I'll say decent, if I put in the effort. Ok well thast enougfh dont want to get too long carry on everyone and stay cool and yeah.

Sometimes I speak like I write, and then I catch myself, because I sound like a real nerdy nerd.

Writing should be more formal than speaking and vice versa.  If I said the sentence you are currently reading out loud, it would seem clumsy and overwrought.  The very word, "overwrought" is so big and heavy, it smashes into the ground like a sky-diving hippopotamus when you say it aloud.  It might be acceptable in a formal speech, but even there you need to watch out for using too many big words or you just seem stuffy and boring.

But hey if I write like this it might be okay for an IM chat or talking in real life...uhhh...but it's not so good when I'm writing for something serious or even for an, um, forum.
